Gantry has a list similar to this on his website. The difference is hopefully what will compel you guys to vote - it is the opinion of the masses.
If it becomes obvious that this post is a failure, I will end it in shame and think of something more pathetic to post.
This is somewhat an extension of my last poll and will influence whether or not I do a poll for an RBI Hall of Fame.
The Ground Rules:
Voting should be based on how well you have done with a particular player. Voters should have played with every player in each category - (I mean really, how long have you been playing this game)
In a Purist spirit, the All-Star teams are not included.
Voting will be done by positions.
The number of polls used to determine a winner is subject to change, and probably will change.
How is the Winner Determined?
If one player receives more than 15 votes and holds a plurality, voting will close and he will be declared the winner.
This message will be posted, along with any modifications, on each new post throughout this series of polls.
The winners will be posted on a separate post, as well as on this post.
Evans--no debate.
I know Evans will be the big favorite here, but Jack Clark absolutely kills me, so I had to go with him. Hrbek just about got my vote, since he's my all-time favorite Twin, but he routinely stinks up the joint when I use him.
There are a bunch of studs on this list, no doubt. But Darrell Evans can't be touched, the only person who IMHO is on the same level is Potatoes. These two are a notech above everyone else in RBI....
I had to go with Will Clark on this one, just edging out JC. Will has a ton of power and hardly ever takes an oh-fer. Jack Clark is definitely one of the top hitters in the game, but too much of an all or nothing guy to be ranked above Will. As for DaEvans, he's just too streaky in my experience. He'll hit a 3 HR game and then give me nothing but popups and doubleplays for the next two or three games. Contrast this with Will Clark, who always drives in runners even when he doesn't go yard. Also Hrbek gets honorable mention for carrying the Twins lineup.
Due to the terms of the Lawsuit: Bill Buckner vs. The Mets, I am legally obligated to vote for Billy in reparation for letting us win the 1986 World Series.
I had to go with Little Jackie paper as well...
My Top 3 are as follows:
1) Jack Clark
2) Dwight Evans
3) Kent Hrbek
Glenn Davis might be the worst power hitter in the game. Darrell Evans is arguably the best power hitter (Reggie) in the game.
No contest as far as the best 1B.
I was actually surprised to see Joyner with no votes so far. For those of you that can't hit with Potatoes like me, Meat, is the big bat on the Angels.
DaEvans and then Will the Thrill. But DaEvans is pretty much ahead of the pack. The guy hits the ball out of the screen at least once a game. No one else can do that.
Big Jack Clark is truly all or nothing. I always want to kick the tv after he gets out.
Evans.
I had to go with Will The Thrill here for basically the same reasons as RockRaines listed. I love Evans but I have seen him go through the occasional power outage which unfortunately renders him completely useless with his speed.
I would also have to say Joyner would be a close third in IMO but no way to make a case for him over the other 2.
How is this even close?
Evans is the best player in the game.--At least top two.
Will is good, but not great.
Are you telling me Jesus Christ (Evans) can't hit a curveball?
Glassjoe, you gotta be kiddin me. But I will admit Will the Thrill is a close second.
I'm curious. Has anyone come up with a formula to rate all the RBI players? Something like taking all the stats Gantry has posted and somehow averaging all of them together. I know there are some of you Neyer/James fanatics out there. Does this make any sense or am I barking up the wrong tree? I know we're in the middle of voting for who's the best, but what does the game itself tell us. I'm rather curious.
Every pitch we throw has to cross the plate. They can be curved but must be called a strike.
I don't know how you can't vote for Evans. He's a beast. He may only hit homers, but that's good enough for me. In straight pitch, he's golden but even in curve (which we play) he's still awesome.
I can see how you can vote for someone else at 1B, but I'm very shocked to see you pick Trammel over Evans. That is a complete constrast in styles, but that's why this games stands the test of time...
Trammell over Evans, wow!
Oh yeah he is, he comes from the Norv Turner/Greg Popovich school of facial complexion...
Definitely had some craters in high school.
DvlDog, I can't believe you're questioning Will Clark. He's the king of hard-hit line drives and also happens to be a lefty (ie doesn't hit into double plays.)
Check out Potsie's bio (I think it's Potsie.) Everyone has different strengths for RBI. I think Gantry and myself are the two big lefty fans.
Evans- Although I was considering Joyner very very much. I get thrown out from RF with Evans at least once per game. Very frustrating. But Joyner is not as consistant.
Mr Six, Darrell Evans.
I'm all over Joyner on this one. He may be the best hitter in the game. Evans is not a bad choice. He is pretty tough. For you Davis fans, I don't know what you are smoking. He sucks. Just b/c he is in a bad lineup doesnt make him good. Buckner blows too. Hrbek and Hernandez are solid. Clark is so so.
hernandez "solid?" might as well say denny walling!
I think clubber got hit by Clubber Lang a few too many times.
I think everyone here is good, except Buckner. He's not in the same league as the rest.
