Title: New 'chat' button
Post by: nightwulf on 11/30/05, 08:56:14 PM
The "chat" button at the top of every page will now be colorful if there are people in chat. You can also get a list of who's in the channel just by holding the mouse pointer over the button. I figured this was a way to show if there are people chatting without breaking the board layout, since the notice on the board index is kinda barely visible.

Thanks to Gerlost for the new button!

And yes, this thread sucks.

Ooh, this is a most solid idea.  Works like a charm...

Can you make it turn a different color if there's wimmens in chat?

i'm in chat right now testing out that new button thing.   this is fun.  it would be more fun if someone was in chat to enjoy this with me.

Hmmm, I just tried going into chat (using IE) and all I got was some blank screen with a "FLOAT" button on it.

LOVE the new chat button but have noticed something.  It only shows who is in the room if you're on the main forums page.  If you're in any other section it still flashes but does not bring up who is in there when running the mouse over it.

EDIT The names pop up when in the News and NCAA Wrestling forum and the main page but not the others.  Hmmmmm...

Yeah, I've noticed the list of who's in the channel is a bit shakey. There's really nothing I can do about it though. The information is always sent, but sometimes it won't come up on the first try. If you don't see it, try moving your mouse pointer off the button then moving it back again a moment later.

Shit, I wish.  I did have a margarita at dinner last night. Fuck, it was tasty.

But yeah, I"m an idiot.  The chat button thing seems to work sometimes and not other times.  I think it's just fucking with me.

Your stoopid.

Despite being a huge Jimmy Buffett fan, I've had about 2 margaritas in my life.  Both I gulped down so I could drink something I actually liked.

How do I do this, Java is installed, and I can even run the Java Web Start application, but still no chat, Chat used to work at work, not sure what the problem is, I'll play around and see if I can figure out how to enable it.

You might need to play around with IE security settings. Control Panel -> Internet Properties -> Security -> Microsoft VM. Unless you're using Sun's VM, in which case I have no idea how it interacts with IE's settings. You might try playing with \Program Files\Java\(version)\bin\javacpl.exe.

Then again if you're trying this at work your firewall could be screwing you. You might ask coworkers if they've noticed anything suddenly "not working" recently.

Oh, remember also that you don't have to use the Java chat. It's here only as a convenience. You can join the chat with any IRC client (mIRC, X-Chat, whatever) on server irc.everywherechat.com in channel #dee-nee.

You sonsabitches have the door locked or something? I thought since there is a nice sized crowd in the chatroom perhaps I'd grace you all with me presence. I've tried two fkn browsers and neither of them work. One just gives me a blank screen and the other (Firefox) totally just up and quits on me. I wanna come in , please let me Loser sonsabitches... who needs ya!

I had to follow the link at the bottom of the chat page to download some Java applet, and then come back and log in.  It took several minutes to follow the labrynth.  Did you get the red x?

The only links that show up for me are the same ones that are at the bottom of every page...
SMF 1.1 RC1.
Lewis Media

Otherwise the chat window that opens is pretty much blank with a "float" button near the bottom.

Agreed, but it's a great way to drum up chat.  I talked to wulf about possibly kicking out idle users, as it only gets annoying when someone forgets to log out and the chat button stays on all day..

JerryD arg chatting pirate...

You should update; Firefox 1.5 has been out for a while.

Tools -> Options -> Content -> Enable Java -- make sure it's checked

Quote from: nightwulf on 02/02/06, 06:34:33 PM
If it is, and Java's not installed, you should be seeing a "additional plugins required to display all the content on this page" notice. Also check the URL about:plugins and see if there's anything there to handle Java.

If nothing else, grab the latest install from here (http://javashoplm.sun.com/ECom/docs/Welcome.jsp?StoreId=22&PartDetailId=jre-1.5.0_01-oth-JPR&SiteId=JSC&TransactionId=noreg). (use the Windows Online Installation).

Not possible. Well it is, but users who are connected to the server but not in a channel are blacklisted and eventually K-Lined (because anyone who's not in a channel is suspected of being a drone). I swear I'm not making this up (http://www.everywherechat.com/faq.asp##30). Granted there's a relatively painless process to take care of it yourself should that happen to you, but still ...

So, uh, I guess the better option would be to have anyone who's been idle for, say, an hour not appear on the "who's online" list as reported by wumpst. No idea when I'll have this done. I fucking hate Tcl.

Dee nee chat isn't something that happens often.  But when it does, it's usually fucking awesome.  The flashing light and not really being in chat taints chat.
