Title: Black Thing
Post by: Shooty on 12/08/05, 02:36:10 PM
From the FAQs:

"Black Thing - The empty, completely black area in the stands above the center field wall and below the scoreboard. Though it may seem insignificant, hitting a home run into the Black Thing is quite rare. Some would even go as far to call it the rarest homer in the game, though I think the Wallzie is a bit rarer. Also known as the Dagobah..."

While I've always thought that area was a big black space, I now believe that it is the base of the scoreboard.

Is there a concensus as to what it is?

Yeah, it's definitely the tarped-over seats or blank space with no seats you see in centerfield at a real ballpark. That's all.

Busch Stadium always had a big Budweiser sign with rotating slats that created a dark navy hitter's eye.  Baseball is dead to me without Busch Stadium.

But it cant just be a hitter's eye or tarped over seats because at the end of the game it says "Game Over".  Either  it is a electric sign that only works at the end of a game or just a normal tarp and the words Game Over were made to show up in the very middle of the screen which happens to fit in that black area, which would then just be the base of the scoreboard.

For the last time, it's not the base of the scoreboard!  The scoreboard just happens to be right above the hitter's eye (which is the same thing as the tarped-over area I was talking about).  Look at that photo of Busch Stadium for a good example of how it would be set up. Just replace the blacked-out Budweiser sign with a scoreboard, and you've got the idea.

The "game over" probably just appears there because hey, it's a nice, convenient big black space for the WHITE letters to go in front of. Really, it has nothing to do with any scoreboard at all.
