Recap
This game started off as another Nolan Ryan debacle and another Bert Blyleven gem. Blyleven struck out Ozzie Smith to open the game, while Ryan's first pitch was deposited in the right field seats by Wade Boggs. Ryan then proceeded to give up 6 more runs in the second, while GlassJoe's only early scoring chance ended when Nokes was gunned down at home on a Ryan single to end the 2nd.
Everything changed, though, in the bottom of the 3rd. Ryan settled down and put together two shutout innings, and Matt Nokes finally got to Blyleven in the top of the 4th. Mike Witt relieved Blyleven and Tudor relieved Ryan in the 5th - Tudor kept up the impressive pitching display, while Witt quickly gave up a 2-run homer to Rice to cut the lead to 2. Then in the 7th, dvldog made back-to-back errors, and the Twin tandem of Puckett and Hrbek followed with RBI singles to tie the game.
Unfortunately for GlassJoe, dvldog finally got to Tudor in the bottom of the 7th. A string of hits was capped by Rich Gedman's 3-run blast, and they kept things going in the 8th, scoring three more before Juan Berenguer showed up to put out the fire. That set the stage for an epic top of the ninth...
Orosco quickly recorded an out, then gave up a string of hits, loading the bases. Dave Lopes drove in a run on a fielder's choice, Mike Aldrete drove in two more with a double, and Ozzie Smith drove him in with a single, immediately stealing second afterward. That brought up Doug DeCinces. DeCinces drove a long fly to left. Gibson settled under it, and DROPPED IT! Smith scored easily, and DeCinces rounded second, hoping for three bases. Gibson recovered and threw a strike to Wade Boggs, who actually had to chase DeCinces back toward second before tagging him out. Ballgame.
