Title: Jim Lindeman turns 44 today

Congrats to Des Plaines!  Time to pimp the db:

http://dee-nee.com/wiki/index.php/Lindeman

This Puhl is in regards to this statement on the db - Because of the plethora of weak starters on St. Louis, Lindeman gets subbed all over the board.

Tell us where you put Lindeman, and why.

#3 or #7 depending on what happens

So what did you vote?  I only see "I don't start him"  voted for.  Should I add "depends on the situation" option?  Shit, I will anyways...

I'll vote #7 because that's probably where he goes most often, sometimes he doesn't bat for me the first time through the order.

Sometimes you gotta do a little shameless self-promotion.  Looking for 15 votes on Lindeman so I can add his pinch-hit info to the database...

#7 - he takes Ford Pinto's spot in the order.  I leave the rest of St. Louie's starting lineup intact - Herr has a permanent free pass from me after a 3-homer game when I was 9 or 10, and I've also always had good luck with Pena.

Do many people put him in the #2 slot?  I guess I can see wanting him to get more ABs, especially in straight-pitch, but I'd think OBP would be the key with Clark coming up, and Lindeman's not going to get you the infield hits that Ozzie does.

If people don't play the speed game (moreso in straight pitch) then Ozzie Smith is useless.  I personally don't like him at #2 because I want a lefty-hit situation when Coleman gets on.  Putting Lindeman there might force some double plays that normally wouldn't come up...

#7, but only if there's someone on base.  If Ford comes up the first time with bases empty, I wait until the second time through the order to sub him in and make better use of the PH boost.

Ozzie Smith is a lefty.

Lindeman goes 7th for me.

As infrequently as I use the Cardinals, I can't have Lindeman hitting into a DP before Clark comes up to bat.  I've found he's more clutch in the bottom part of the lineup.

I was thinking the same thing when I read it, but Gantry is referring to Lindeman when he says "personally I don't like him at #2", because he does like Ozzie's lefty hit potential.

I bat him 7th, as previously mentioned he is too slow to hit in the top of that speedster order.

I think 7th is ideal in theory, but in reality 7th is a horrible spot for Lindeman because it allows the opposition to pitch around Clark at 4 and Lindeman at 7.

So that is why I like Lindeman either 3rd or 5th...whatever the situation calls for.

So you take McGee out for the whole game then or does he typically get an AB?  Jeez, McGee only has a 789 power?  He is worse than I thought...

always #3.  herr blows, even though he hit 4-4 against me once with Nate.  Homer/tripple and 2 singles.  rat fkn bastid.  Herr is damn weak and Clark needs some protection of sorts.  mcgee has wheels so he stays in.

It really depends.  If there's two outs and 3rd hole up, I let Herr bat and save the 5 hole for Lindeman...I don't really care about McGee or Herr at all; I just want to create a situation where Clark/Lindeman bat back-to-back without there being two outs and bases empty.

Makes sense Joe...  Looking at the numbers now there isn't a ton of difference between McGee and Herr.  McGee beats him in every real RBI category, but none of them are by too much.  I always considered McGee to have much more pop than Herr, but the numbers don't lie.

Did some quick updating to the McGee page while I was checking this out:

http://dee-nee.com/wiki/index.php/Willie_McGee

The quotes Shitpaw in there are quite good, especially a shocking one from Whitey Herzog

Well, in my opinion this is flawed because inning one you might have Coleman and Smith get out right away.  Then you sub in Lindeman with two outs and nobody on.  Pitcher has to face him because Clark is on deck, but if he can get him out, then he can IBB Clark in inning two.   However, if you let Herr bat in that situation:
a) he gets on base and then you have Clark and Lindeman up next with a man on, or
b) he gets out, but you get to lead off the next inning with Clark and Lindeman with no outs.

...just my opinion.

17 votes in so far, good work...  I'm now shooting for 20 votes to make it official.  Even if you don't want to talk just vote on where you put Lindeman in the order.  Future generations of RBI'ers will thank you...

I leave all of STL's starters in, because I like to have some pop on my bench late in the game if I have to pinch-hit, and Lindeman is about the closest thing to 'pop' that the Cards have outside of Jack Clark.  In the past, I used to use Oquendo before I'd use Lindeman for nostalgic purposes (I actually remember cheering on Oquendo, whereas I don't even recall there being a 'real life' Lindeman), though I have since placed Lindeman ahead of hJose.

Down 3-1 tonight, two outs, runners on 1st and 2nd, and who comes up in the 7 hole? Jim Lindeman, so of course me and Octo both sit up, Lindeman works the count to 2-2 including one MONSTROUS foul ball, but alas, he strikes out (possibly on a Blyleven sinker, not sure).

Lindeman got a double tonight in four games, not enough to warrant a happy birthday.

Sounds like one of those situations where even if you are pitching against the guy, you want him to go yard...

He definitely got at least one pitch grooved to him, which of course followed Minnesota's 5 run 3rd inning which was sparked by a bop on Reardon's bunt, but unfortunately he didn't do anything with it.

For what it's worth, Reardon, in four games, had 20 IP and gave up one run, he was also 0-1 on the night.
