Title: More RBI Talk Should Be Had
Post by: JoeDirt on 01/15/06, 11:14:40 PM
In an effort to stir up more RBI chatter, I want to know where you fellas look when batting (please also specify what style you play if it's not common knowledge).

I ask because a very respected RBI player once told me that he locks his eyes in on home plate and it he sees the ball about to cross any part of it, he swings.  If he doesn't, he doesn't.  This player is ATG.

This struck me as quite odd as I try to follow the ball with my eyes as much as possible.  When I'm really struggling, I try to actually see the ball come out of the pitcher's hand.

I almost always follow the ball in straight pitch.  Sometimes I do "lock on home plate" thing, moreso in ATG, but always go back to following the ball.  So for me strictly as a slumpbuster...

I always follow the ball, as I'm sure most people do.  I have a hard time believing that locking in on home plate would be too constructive.

Find the ball in his hand and watch it the whole way in.

I play anything goes.  if you watch it the whole way its easier to tell if its gonna be inside or outside and move you batter accordingly.

i usually set up in the top inside corner of the batter's box.  then i adjust as i watch the picth out of the pitchers hand.

whoever told you that they just watch the plate is ridiculous, unless they like to foul off 200 pitches a game and get caught waving at a pitch on the outside part of the plate because they're too far back in the box.

I wish I was better at fouling off pitches.

I always play RBI with my eyes closed.  That way when my opponent throws blinding powder in my face, it has no effect.

It has some short-term use for me in ATG when I can't hit the broad side of a barn, but I don't think I could play for more than a few ABs that way.

I 1st heard this from Dirt awhile ago, and tried it a little.  takes some getting used to but its alright.  Overall i think i shall just stick with the regular way of watching the ball all the way.

gotta see the ball out of the pitcher's hand...but then again, I do have a couple buddies whom I have played with that pick a portion of the plate say inside..and as soon as the pitch is thrown they move their man to get the fat part of the bat on the ball if it comes that way....such as They guess inside, and move the batter away from the plate so as to make better contact with the fat part of the bat without watching the pitch....if the ball doesnt go outside they either dont swing or take a frustrated "cant take a pitch" swing

we equate this to someone going on tilt in poker....

Why would anybody lie about this?  That would be sorta dumb.  Like Gantry is...dumb.

For every batter, I just hold down and go all the way to the bottom, and try to line up the best I can.  Usually I'm still holding the down arrow when I make contact.  It doesn't help but it's just what I do.

Oh,  I have a game genie code for this game that I created.  If you type in "PUPKOX" (i have to find the paper with the code on it to be sure),  any ball that rolls to the wall will continue to keep going until it's offscreen.  You still have to run around the bases to get credit for it.  Weird.

Interesting topic, I almost always follow the ball out of the pitcher's hand, since that way you get the best timing to pull the ball if you can make contact.  But locking in on home has its advantage when you've got two strikes on you and you just don't want to strike out, since at least for me it allows you to see the path of the ball better.  It can delay your swing somewhat, resulting in weaker up-the-middle or opposite field hits, but that's certainly a better alternative to striking out, especially against a hard-throwing pitcher.
