Title: New RBI Site
Post by: Gantry on 12/24/03, 03:13:16 PM
Sorry for taking so long to post this, but a new site was emailed to me a few weeks ago.  Off to a good start, like the extra player profile stuff...

http://home.mchsi.com/~jameshalaris/ (http://home.mchsi.com/~jameshalaris/)

Be sure and let Jim know what you think.  Only in the beginning stages but any emails he gets will probably inspire him to keep going!

Thanks Gantry for putting my page on your forums and links pages.  New updates to tourney page from December 2003!  Check it out!

Well done Jim, like the wide variety of beers in your pictures.  Like this in Pete's profile:

"Unfounded, but known for being molested at Burger King for not providing the correct amount of change for my whopper."

Straight pitch must be a midwest thing.  ;)

FYI, I restart work in 3 days, so I can start playing over the LAN with one of my collegues again.

It is a midwest thing.  We have played that way since i was 9 years old.  Its fun both ways but for tourney's sake, we play straight!

A solid way to get decent looking video clips of game action is to use a VCR.  Run the NES through the VCR first and then out to the TV.  You can then record the game directly with no video camera.  Works very well, just don't use EP mode like I did.  That looks like crap...

Not necessarily. I've lived in Decatur, IL for most of my life (center of IL, about 2.5 hours away from Chicago) and this straight-pitch-only stuff is new to me.

H-bomb does not know what he is talking about "Straight pitch is a midwest thing" He made the RBI tournyment a straight pitch because he probably could not handle the curve.  Personally I prefer the straight pitch tourny over the Curve.  as someone once said -

"If you want a realistic game, play something made in the last year. If you want the most skillful game, play chess. Everyone who still plays RBI does it to have fun, because it's the most enjoyable two player game ever made." -  Gantry

Finally checked out the site and I'm glad to see RBI we're not the only RBI freaks.  I love the infield fly rule, since my little brother used to pull that bush league bullshit all the time when we were kids.

Infield fly?
I just can't agree with that.
Title: Re:New RBI Site
Post by: fknmclane on 01/05/04, 12:10:14 PM
I thought it was an infield fly rule at first but upon reading it I agreed with it.  Then again, I may be extremely confused on the issue because they don't do a great job of explaining it.

My understanding was that if a player purposely drops a infield fly ball to double up the runners, that cheating bastard is penalized.  That's my understanding but I could be totally wrong.
Title: Re:New RBI Site
Post by: vgp100 on 01/05/04, 12:22:39 PM
I just think that's part of the game--if you get doubled up, so be it.

Let them Play!
Title: Re:New RBI Site
Post by: dvldog on 01/05/04, 12:25:08 PM
I like the attempt to modernize the game - pretty original, but I still like trying to double guys up on infield flies.
Title: Re:New RBI Site

The true punishment is a swift kick to the balls followed by a lugee in the face.  Sort of reverse creamy pirate.

Kick or knee--whatever works.
Title: Re:New RBI Site
Post by: Gantry on 01/05/04, 03:57:48 PM
We play an honor system infield fly I guess.  If you can purposely drop it, you could double up everytime there more than one runner on.  That's ass...
Title: Re:New RBI Site - Foul Balls
Post by: The Captain on 01/05/04, 04:39:04 PM
What does everyone think about a limit to how many foul balls you can hit per inning or batter??  That question came about even though the foul balls were not hit on purpouse just hit foul due to the batting style.  I personally disagree with limiting how many foul balls you can hit but some people are pulling for that!
Title: Re:New RBI Site
Post by: dvldog on 01/05/04, 04:51:34 PM
Consistently hitting a foul ball, IMO, takes some skill - you have two strikes, and you have to make contact...

I guess it would be easier in straight pitch, but it's a helluva feat for curve.
Title: Re:New RBI Site
Post by: the Legend on 01/05/04, 04:54:49 PM
Who cares about the number of fouls balls? If you knock a pitcher out of the game by wearing him down, I think that is a legitimate strategy.

I do have one question - why did the Captain bring in Tony Armas to pinch hit in the sixth inning for his pitcher after opening up a seven run lead? It just doesn't make sense.

The Legend
Title: Re:New RBI Site
Post by: The Captain on 01/05/04, 05:01:14 PM
Was not trying to wear out Nicks Pitcher....

As to the Tony Armas situation I think Dave Henderson and Burks are much better hitters than him.  l
Title: Re:New RBI Site
Post by: Gantry on 01/05/04, 05:04:12 PM
I can see fouling off pitches as a legit strategy in curve, but in straight pitch it is downright annoying.  That's why we have drinking rules - every foul ball after the 3rd in a row is a drink...
Title: Re:New RBI Site
Post by: fknmclane on 01/05/04, 05:50:48 PM
In my living room, every foul ball after the third is either a drink, a punch in the arm or a slap in the face.  If those three don't deter, it's a full beer or a kick in the nuts.
We play slurve (it has to end up a strike) and I can wear out a pitcher in the first inning if I really want to.  No joke.  It just isn't fair in our style of pitching.
Title: Re:New RBI Site
Post by: Glassjoe on 01/05/04, 07:16:42 PM
we play "If you don't want me to continue to foul off pitches and make your pitcher tired, then make me miss."

But that's with curve style.  And we typically only attempt this with the pitcher...base hits are too precious, as you're pretty much trading an out for a ton of foul balls to tire the P.
Title: Re:New RBI Site
Post by: Gantry on 01/05/04, 07:52:17 PM
mclane, is slurve a term for curve balls that have to be a strike?
Title: Re:New RBI Site
Post by: x96halaris on 01/05/04, 08:46:24 PM
That's it...The captina will be slapped or kicked after every three foul balls.  Infield fly rule was created because teh Legend got screwed...

Title: Re:New RBI Site
Post by: Baines on 01/06/04, 02:01:41 PM
We play straight pitch so it's not too big of a difference but for me it all depends on the pitcher.  I'd rather hit with righties vs. LH pitching and vice versa.  I'm sure it makes absolutely no difference but for some reason I just think I have a better feel for it that way.
Title: Re:New RBI Site
Post by: Gantry on 01/06/04, 02:11:55 PM
In straight pitch I still think there's a big difference between righty & lefty.  Especially with runners on...

You definitely want righties up against a LH pitcher.  Lefties have a tough time hitting the LH'ers, especially the low-power ones...

I was completely at peace with the world after losing the championship to the Captain. However, the Captain's insults and foolish remarks have awoken a sleeping RBI beast.

One day you will be destroyed in RBI in front of a multitude of witnesses.  That day may be Feb 21, it may not. You can bring your Vitamin C, deep dish pizza, and your Homersapien shirt, but nothing can help you now.  There is no where to run.  Brother, you are going down.

It will be very difficult to squeeze a victory out in the legends layer after what has been said to boil his blood!

It should be an interesting match up if we should meet in the tourny!

As for h-bomb he will be on beer Number 12 by the time tourny starts that will his disadvantage.. but on the other hand the rest of will probably be too.. except for DUMGEN

I think my problem at teh last tourney was that i had not had enough to drink.  beside, i am going to have a cheerleader with me at the game...and its Pete's favorite - MaryKay!

That's cool if Tour Guide shows up.  I suppose if a girl wants to watch a 5 hour RBI tournament without any chance of getting any action, that's her decision to make.  After the game, she can show around the city.  I haven't found a McDonald's in my new neighborhood yet. I am sure Pete is anxious to fart on someone new this time.

As for the tourney, my money is on the Legend because:

And Last!  You have to learn how to relax and take things in stride and not go into attack mode so quickly.  Didn't Halaris have this talk with you??  I think you calling me the stupidest person you have ever met is Harsh! I may have a few spelling errors on here but that does not make me dumb!
