Title: Best closer in the game...
Post by: pedriqrules on 05/09/02, 07:38:52 AM
who's the best closer in the game?  I think it's grelts for sanfran.  I usually start the game with him, and then he gives me at least five innings of solid work.  Or if you start with krukow, grelts almost always shuts the other team down in the last few innings.  I also have always had a difficult time with those damn sidearm throwers.  Especially that dude from houston.

For us Guillermo Hernandez is the last pitcher you want to face in a close game.  He is a terror against lefties and has a HUGE different between his fastball and normal pitch.  He has caused more than one strikeout by people expecting the heater and swinging too early...

Garrelts & Beringer are also studs, but they have a tendency to go 1-2-3 or give up 5 dingers.  Game in and game out, I'll take Hernandez...

All the closers suck, if you can get past the 2 starters your in for a slugfest.  If I had to choose i'd go with worrell or grelts.

grelts has noooooooooooooooooo action.....the guy can bring the heat, but he's so easy to read....i have a real tough time against the minnesota relief staff...they are nasty....offhand, those are the only guys i fear...

i like reardon myself... he throws decent and is equipped with a mean cutter.  hey pedriq, if you like garelts so much as a closer... why do you start him?

for the most part... the rest of the relievers suck.

Interesting to know that most of the relievers suck.  Is it a lack or curve or lack or endurance that's their achillies heel?

Both a lack of curve and endurance.  Especially curve, in curve pitching games a lack of a good curve will kill ya.  Batters will be able to sit on inside or outside pitches depending on where the pitcher stands and if the pitcher stands in the middle you're pretty much guaranteed of a hittable pitch.

I usually start grelts because he can give me at least five innings of scoreless ball, and depending on who i'm playing and if i'm hitting good, I can sometimes 10 run them by the 6th inning.  Plus I think krukow is a decent curve pitcher, but he has no heat, and I'm best with pitchers with heat, so if i start krukow i usually am lucky to hold the other team to 4 or 5 runs in the first 6 innings.

Hernandez on Detroit is a great closer.  This turd is solid when the game is on the line.  I am also partial to Ken Dayley.  Minnesota's closers are solid, and Orosco is pretty tough if you are facing a predominantly left handed batting lineup.  The underarm pitchers do make a slight difference when facing a batter from the same side.

Boston has the absolute worst bullpen!  I like playing against Boston, because I know in the late innings I am going to go yard 4 or 5 times off those shit-heels!

Black Thing, I must say you have some damn good descriptions of players (shit-heels, rope dick dog, etc). Anyway, Juan "Senor Smoke" Beringuer is the best closer.  He strikes so much fear in the hitters.  I don't know if it is because he throws so hard, or if it is because the hitters can't tell what he's thinking since he doesn't know a single word from the English language.  Reardon is the best set-up man also, providing for the best 1-2 reliever punch.  NY bullpen is alright also, but they never get a chance for a save since the team sucks.

i agree with dill...  minnesota's bully is solid...

pedriq... i guess you meant who is the best non-starter in the game... my bad.

I disagree with you guys that like brnger.  He throws hard but has absolutely no curve whatsoever.  He gets spanked in curve pitching games.

not if you change speeds and throw the ball inside...  if you throw nothing but fastballs then you are going to get lit up...  if you use him correctly he can be very effective.

I still disagree.  Changing speeds isn't that effective because you can hear that the fastball makes a different noise on release then a curve does.  if you don't have time to make that adjustment you can just try to slap fastballs the other way, while turning on curves.  The speed differential between the curve and heater isn't enough to make someone miss the pitch altogether.

and i will fire back in defense of dill and gwynn to say that senor smoke is the most dominating force out of the pen...i used minnesota for a series yesterday, and we were up 1-0 on california in the bottom of the ninth....facing dicinces, meat and potatoes....and senor came in and absolutely blew them away....i think pitch speed and location mean a ton...whether or not you can hear the difference, with mr smoke, its past you once you realize hes throwing quick...or you nub it off the end of the bat....so you have to anticipate it...in doing so, you can throw the sinker or offspeed and really fool your hitter...and knowing you only have to use him for one inning, unlike clemens, ryan or the doc, you can go balls out....so you do, and senor has three saves in the series, giving up no hits, no runs and only 4 measly ground balls....he is the master........

just pushing a is another way of changing speeds... you dont have to push up to be deceptive...  brnger is nails.

I still disagree about brnger's effectiveness.  You can time him pretty easy.  I shell that mofo everytime he's brought in.  I'll take a pitcher that can paint the corners over a flamethrower anyday.

thats why you have to love RBI...  there are several ways to get hitters out...  depending on which pitcher you use determines your strategy for getting hitters out.

Maybe my problem is that when i play we allow for using both starters in one game.  This way the relievers rarely get in.  If we played with only 1 starter per game i'd probably have to adjust my pitching style.

give me a call...   and i will tell you aaron...

when able to use two starters, relievers are seldom used.  however, there are times where they are so needed and their performance can make or break your game.

I'd have to go with Juan, "Senor Smoke" Berenger.  He isn't all that effective if you really need to use him for more than about 2 innings or so.  His arm turns to mush after a couple batters.  Still, if you need a quick 3 outs, Berenger does it the best....

i use bringer for an inning at a time... depending on who is coming up for the other team... if there is a spot where a series of righties are coming up in the 8th i will use him then... he seems to be vulnerable to lefties...  reardon gets to face them because of his effective cutter.
