Not sure why I never noticed this before.

But it's clearly meant to be a simulation of the '86 and '87 World Series.

You got the 8 playoff teams, the game designed as a seven game series (hence the game resetting itselt ONLY when a team is up 4-x in a series)

And it's got the outfield umps, which is only utilized during the playoffs or All Star Game.

question to ponder:

Would RBI even exist if one of the teams made the playoffs in both '86 and '87? The game , nay, the universe itself would have an imbalance.
