1. The RBI Baseball theme remix. Made by some enterprising nerd, this brings us back to a great era of sports video games, where there were only two buttons, players who looked like Fisher Price men and secret weapons like Tony Armas off the bench.

What's up guys. I wrote that post over at San Diego Serenade, and felt that Dee-nee was the best page to go for anyon looking for further information on the game. It's a resource I contacted many a time when trying to discover which players were still active and whether pitchers could ever hit a home run. In fact, during junior year of college, my roomates and I debated rolling up to chicago and challenging you guys to a tournament, but of course that got sidetracked. We also play one starting pitcher, and allow him to control the ball, so either side would have had good excuses if we lost.
I also feel like I've let people down by not posting the superior techno remix and would like to post it on my site if that's OK.

There are many reliable sources that have confirmed that they can
I hit one off the wall with Blyleven before.
My reasoning for not believing people who claimed they did it, was it seemed to me (and my memory may not be accurate on this), that by and large they claimed to do it with all stars.
And if you use all star teams, you really don't respect the sanctity of the game.

I remember noticing that before - I think doveRBI said he hit his with Saberhagen, and someone else claimed they hit one with either Sutcliffe or Fernando. Also, we had one in the fantasy league that was probably four or five pixels from being a wallzie, and it was with Jimmy Key.
Baines hit his with Nolan, but that was in the arcade version... same pitcher stats, though.
Conor - do you live in San Diego? I'm trying to get an LA mini-tournament together, if you are at all interested in coming up.

We've discussed this pretty much every time a pitcher comes up to bat.
Can't happen, the only trustworthy person who's claimed it is Baines, and it happened on an arcade machine, so it's possible in arcade, but can't happen on an NES.
this whole argument aside...it really stinks that a pitcher with hthier abilities can almost hit one out(over the wall) once in a blue moon. its a shame they didnt reduce the contact number a little ways and increase the power just a tad to have the occasional homer (non walzie).
a once a year pitcher homerun in a 2-player game would make for some good discussions.

But you SAW a pitcher hit a ball that went all the way to the wall in the air, something that turns into a wallzie 95% of the time. Damn it, I really wish we'd had the VCR recording for that one...
Also TBT, I think they got it just right -- after all, look at the myths and legends it's created. Although yes, it might be amusing if the game randomly generated a 1:100,000 chance of giving the pitcher 900 power on any given swing...
thats a cool thought, but im not implying that happens. your right though, the whole myth/legend is fairly cool. that, or were just obsessive nerds about this game.
Another thing im geting at, is all the variables would also have to be exactly perfect for the pitcher to hit one out. it would have to be down the line for the most part...no power alley shots or center field homers. its just a case of getting the perfect pitch, then stroking down the line in the air.
another thing is all the near misses that would occur as well. the pitchers would cause a few scares in games as they got ahold of one, but it gets caught right at the wall. Id see strategy change a bit as well, if you knew they could go yard.
oh, my 2 cents on pitchers hitting...i have seen once, a pitcher hit one off the base/bottom of the wall. it was in fair territory down the line, but a little ways off to the side the foul poul. ;D
i have yet to witness a wallzie. i saw a ball that clearly looked like it should have been a wallzie, but wasnt. hit dead on at the bottom of the foul poul.

I have seen Jimmy Key hit a wallzie (Briznock can verify), BUT it was a watch all star game....So I dont believe in pitcher homers one damned bit

Center looks shorter, but only if you don't correct for the angled perspective (because you're not looking at the field from directly overhead). The actual distance is longer, and I think experience shows that it's harder to hit homers to CF as well.
ive never seen this so called view that makes center field look shorter/closer than down the lines. ???
to me it always looked obvious that CF was the long way.

When fighton did his original measurements, he just measured distance, like in pixels, and it was shorter, or maybe about the same.
