Title: The All Star Debate
Post by: Glassjoe on 01/05/04, 07:28:34 PM
One thing I'm having a hard time "swallowing" is the All Star teams thing.

What I specifically don't get is:

How can people say that real RBI players don't use the All Star teams because they turn the game into a slugfest and anybody with just a touch of power (and not necessarily any contact) can jack it out...how can you say this and accept the straight pitch theory?  Doesn't that make it much much much more of a slugfest than the All Star teams ever could?

I submit that this even goes for Slurve play.  If the ball always crosses the plate, isn't it pretty damn close to a slugfest?

On top of it all, there are only10 damn teams to begin with...I'd hate to cut 25% of them out AND still leave Houston in to play.  :)

Even further, the AL team kinda sucks (for an All Star team, anyway).  I think Boston is better...even in curve.

It's more of an issue in straight, because all games are slugfests.  If you use all-stars, they have an unfair advantage.  Though admittedly we haven't used All-Stars in quite some time, I wonder what a month-long straight pitch AL vs Detroit would turn out to be...

In Curve against either All star team....you cant leave any pitch over the plate...or it leaves the yard quickly........But

Computer vs. Computer...drinking rules with all star teams against each other......Lots of fun...

I am one of the few where All-Star teams are fair game no matter what.  We play a slurve style and randomly pick teams.  If an All-Star team is chosen it doesn't matter.  They'll usually win, it's true.  But things can go wrong and I've said this before, beating an All-Star team is a damn good feeling.
And yes, the AL sucks, all because of Ripken and the fact that Brett is living in the Bizarro world.

You assholes.  This is a purity issue.  The facts are irrelavent.  Simply put.  The true RBI'er denounces the FUCK out of the All-Star teams.  I'm with goreds though.  A watch game for use in "death" is clutch.  Other than that they are strickly off limits.

We randomly pick our teams by cycling through and having someone outside the room yell "STOP!" and all star teams are fair game.

However I don't really ever want to play with one, especially against a shitty team, b/c it's a no win situation. If you win, big deal, you're supposed to, but if San Fran or one of the average teams goes on a one game tear then you look like a complete douche.  On the other hand though it's a damn good feeling to have Houston and take down someone with an AS team, giving you the right to talk shit for a couple days.

Plus, what would any game be without Harold Baines, the Ageless Wonder and God's gift to baseball.

HB makes a ton of sense and don't you dare call me RBI impure, Dove.  That's a straight kick in the nuts.  We just play slightly differently.  Try our method sometime.  It wouldn't hurt.  After all, I've tried everyone else's methods and they...SUCKS MY GIANT DICK!!!!

I think the rule is OK. If you are picking randomly, why is All Star team any more of an advantage than Houston a disadvantage.
If your opponent picks an All Star team, tough shit. Just play better.

Agreed - the AL is crap (well, for an all-star team).  My old RBI opponent growing up used to like them because of the Bash Brothers, so I'd get the superior NL for our all-star battles.  As for regular play, I prefer not to use them, but with random teams it's hard to avoid.  I'd let a newbie have them, though.

All star teams are used by players new to the game.....but once you a seasonsed veteran you should challenge your self.

That said I will play only with Houston from here on out.

To be completely honest, I think Baines sucks on the game too but I leave him in b/c he's one of my all time favorites in real life.   His power is mediocre and he'd probably be neck and neck in a footrace with Armas and Evans but he has come through in the clutch a couple times for me.

I leave Sandberg in for the NL for the same reason - he's my favorite player.  In related news, my wife recently solidified her position as my favorite person on earth by getting me a Sandberg jersey for Christmas.

The dice decide which teams we use.  Thus, we get match-ups that appear to be lopsided but turn out to be exicting contests.  That is the parity that is RBI baseball.

I concur that the dice is a very fun way to play RBI.  We went out and got one (though admittedly an 8-sided) after Gwynn/Pines/Pines mentioned it.  We still use it for our curve game.  Definitely a breath of fresh air, as you get matchups that you typically wouldn't pick...
