Title: Any Denver/Boulder, CO area RBIers?
Post by: O Say Can Seco on 04/24/06, 03:18:26 PM
Hey there everyone...

Just registered (been lurking for a little bit)...this site is awesome!!!  Im nearly 21, and growing up we had a Nintendo (and RBI of course!), so pretty much as soon as I was old enough to handle a Nintendo controller I was playing it...eventually I lost interest in Nintendo as we made the huge step up to a Sega Genesis (where I became a Joe Montana Football junkie), and I generally forgot about RBI for the most part...a few years ago I attempted to get the Nintendo to work again (hoping to play RBI), sadly to no avail, and again forgot about  RBI...flash forward to last week when I saw a link to the 1986 Game 6 WS RBI video on fark.com (which rocked!), and that spurned me to try to find an emulator for it, and I also stumbled across this site in the process...

Needless to say since getting an emulator I've been spending the past week or two 100% addicted to it, reliving my childhood...

Generally, I play with the American League All-Stars (evidently not the most popular choice on the site from what I gather), because growing up my favorite baseball player was Jose Canseco (in retrospect, I picked a great role model, didn't I!)...as you can see by my forum name, when I was younger I liked to spoof his name with the first part of our national anthem, so thats what that is a flashback to...

Anyways, a few thoughts on the AL Allstars while I'm at it since they arent talked about much here...

-I always sub Willie Randolph for Big Mac right away...with the pinch-hit boost, Big Mac's first AB HR's are so insanely powerful and deep its amazing

-Bill Schroeder is not that bad of a hitter...I think the worst hitter in my experience with the AL All-Stars is Harold Baines

-Bret Saberhagen...not only a great pitcher, but a great hitter (for a pitcher at least) as well...

-The bullpen sucks...Righetti and Henke are absolutely terrible and I rue having to use them when the starter runs out of gas...McGwire excepted, the pinch hitters are so-so...can't count on them for instant HR's but base hits are to be expected

-Canseco...much as it pains me to say it, hes a bit overrated...hes got great power when he can make contact but I find myself striking out with him a lot (probably more my fault than the game's)...I'm still learning to control my urge to swing at every pitch...

-Baserunning...this team is slow as heck...no prospects for basestealing except Canseco occasionally...

-Not very error prone on defense, but it does happen occasionally - overall not a problem

So yea...Im currently in Boulder, Colorado right now where Im a student at CU-Boulder...in real life I support the Colorado Rockies even though I grew up in a suburb of Philadelphia (only Philly team I support is the E-A-G-L-E-S EAGLES!)...I dunno if there are any other RBIers in the Boulder/Denver area but if there are, let me know!

welcome osay, check out the rbi database for more particular questions or run a search through this site using the search button on the top of the page.  you had a great first post.  some things that stick out.  as far as batting, the user controls the whole thing, so any strikeouts you notice with conseco are completely your own.   and pitchers all have the same internal numbers in the game (code) so they hit equally, although people tend to prefer the all-star pitchers for some reason... the only real difference with pitchers is lefty or righty at the plate.

Teddy summed it up pretty well, welcome!  College is really the best place to get comp for RBI.  You guys typically have a lot of time and energy on your hands for things like RBI.  Even without a NES, you can use two USB joysticks and play via an emulator.  It takes on old NES junkie or sports fan to get started.  Find a buddy and get him started.  Buy him a beer/burrito/whatever if he plays a couple games against you.  Once people get a dozen or so games under their belt, they are addicted.

Good luck and keep on posting!

Welcome Osay, I am in Longmont now and I used to live in Boulder.  My parents are from a small town about 20 miles outside of Pottsville, PA.  This fact drove me to be a Phillies fan in my early years, but these days I follow the Rockies much closer.

Have you been to Game Force in Boulder?  They could probably set you up with a Nintendo and RBI if you get sick of the emulators, although being a student, you probably will have to live with the emulator for a while!

Boulder, CO, eh?  Do you know Mother Abigail?

Also, OSay--what style of play do you prefer?  I am with you--the All Star teams must be used.

Welcome, Osay.  Click here (http://forums.dee-nee.com/index.php?topic=3169.0) to read my semi-hatred review for those craptastic AL All-Stars.

Also, you must buy the NES and play the drinking game.  It has to be done.

Thanks for the replies guys...fathed, no, I haven't been to GameForce...Im really not much of a video gamer overall, but I will go check it out sometime soon....

As for style of play, I think straight pitch sounds more fun (Im a lousy pitcher anyways in 1 player!)...definitely like to see a good offensive minded game...haven't played 2 player RBI in at least a dozen years or so though and when I play the comp I just use Anything Goes...
