Title: 1987
Post by: GDavis on 01/08/04, 09:17:34 PM
Congrats Gantry on 1987 posts.  1987 the year of RBI!

Now I'll dip into RBI2 territory...

Never ever go there.  RBI II and III are total shitholes.

I cant stand RBI II and III.

In terms of post count, not game quality.  RBI 2 came in later years...

Speaking of RBI 2...I bought it off Ebay so I'd have something besides RBI to play over Christmas break at the in-laws. FUCKING HATED IT.  Dove is right...it was never made.  Never happened.

None of the players give the peace sign in RBI II.

Ah man, that game was so stupid.

My pick for the worst NES game, aside from the aforementioned, would be Wayne Gretzky's Hockey.  Tons of hype, a load of crap.

I had that game, too.  The players were so small.
I just can't see how a game maker can finish making that game and say. "Ok, I think we have a winner here"
Title: Re:1987

The players were dots on the screen.  I remember renting it and returning it an hour later.

You're making me want to find this game just so I can see how bad it was.  Nintendo Ice Hockey was the best, we tried Blades of Steel for a little while and it was decent, but we would always go back to Ice Hockey
Title: Re:1987
Post by: jaylums on 01/09/04, 02:27:18 PM
I liked Ice Hockey, I thought Blades of Steel rocked!  EA's line of hockey games are hockey's equivalent to RBI in terms of gameplay to me.
Title: Re:1987

In college played lots of EA NHL (93,94,95) for Sega Genesis

Ice Hockey was kick ass!!! If you had only the fat players and some real teams it would be the hockey equivalent of RBI.

Good point from HBaines on Ice Hockey.

Blades of Steel rocked just because of the one on one fighting and that stupid spaceship game between periods.

4-man tag team RBI 1986 vs RBI 1987, who would win?

1986 - Boston, Cali, Houston, Mets
1987 - Detroit, Minnesota, St. Louis, San Fran

Tough matchups there, I give 1986 the slight edge...
Title: Re: 1987
Post by: Nails on 04/27/05, 05:27:05 PM
I'd say '86.  Gooden, Clemens, Ryan, Scott on one pitching staff, and combining Boston and Cali's lineups would be unstoppable.

Combined 1986 Team

1 - Burks
2 - Strawberry
3 - Rice
4 - Jackson
5 - Baylor
6 - Ruppert
7 - Armas
8 - Joyner

B1 - DeCinces
B2 - D. Evans
B3 - G. Carter
B4 - Wilfong/Hernandez

Gotta have a lefty on the bench, that's a quality lineup

The '87 team isn't as good, but it wouldn't be bad by any means...

Chili
Gibson
Hrbek
Evans
Brunansky
Jack Clark
Gaetti
Brookens

Will Clark
Lemon
Lindeman
Leonard/Coleman/Dee-Nee/whoever

Blyleven
Tudor
Berenguer
Worrell?

i don't know if you should include guys who's stats aren't 86 or 87l, such as Armas and Reggie :(

also, burks' stats on this game are from '87

I'd prefer 87 (But I'm most familar with St. Louis, Detroit, and San Fran), no Trammell on 87??

Also, am I the only one that has trouble pitching (anything goes) with Blyleven? He's too damned good, I try to be far to pinpoint with him (plus, it's tough for me to make myself throw slow pitches, even on 0-2's) and it comes back to haunt me...Tudor and Krukow/Reushl I tend to have no problem with, but Blyleven is just too good.

I initially put Trammell in as the leadoff man for the '87 team, but Chili is nearly as fast and has much more power, so I put him there instead.  Trammell has less power than anyone on the '87 roster, although I could see putting him in for his speed/power combo or having him on the bench as an excellent PH.

It's a good lineup, but put Will Clark in the 87 starting lineup for Brookens.   Then put Sheridan/Nokes/Spilman on the bench for a lefty sub...

a very good thread.  more rbi talk is necessary.

Is Hrbek deserving of being on the team?
Title: Re: 1987
Post by: Nails on 04/28/05, 05:35:37 PM
HRbek is one of the most dangerous hitters in the league in my opinion.  Often underrated.
Title: Re: 1987
Post by: Gantry on 04/28/05, 06:11:44 PM
There is no dobut that Hrbek belongs, he's a top10 player IMHO
Title: Re: 1987
Post by: ultimate7 on 04/28/05, 10:17:18 PM
Certainly Hrbek, at least on the bench.

I have trouble leaving off Krukow, but that's tough, 2 strong starters are there.
Title: Re: 1987
Post by: Gantry on 04/30/05, 02:18:49 AM
Hrbek and Will Clark to me are both no-brainer starters on that team.

I disagree with Brookens in the lineup and Lemon on the bench as well.  To me Trammell is better than both those guys and deserves a spot on the 1987 team.  Discuss...

Title: Re: 1987
Post by: Nails on 04/30/05, 03:13:19 AM
Brookens and Lemon have more power, but Trammell is definitely a lot more consistent, which in the end means more production for me.  Add his speed, and he's one of the more well-rounded players in the game.  Trammell gets the call.
Title: Re: 1987
Post by: fknmclane on 05/01/05, 11:04:59 PM
I second the call for Trammell.  No doubter.
Title: Re: 1987
Post by: BDawk on 05/02/05, 08:32:28 AM
I like Brookens better than Trammell, but both should start.
Lemon would be a great bench guy.

Trammell has hit more first pitch of the game hrs than anyone in history.
I love when he hits one before the music starts.
Just the sound of the ball, fireworks ans cheering.

Your entire response confuses me.
1) what does smelling the controller have to do with my post?
2)What does playing the game for free have to do with either your first sentence or my post
3) why did you say you'd play RBI for free? Do you sometimes get paid for it?
4) By the way, what does your controller smell like?

i'm going to go out on a limb and say that fknmclane is alluding to the way a player loves the game of baseball.  smelling the leather of your glove perhaps?  a professional player would play the game for free because he loved it so much, maybe.

however, even out of context, i find mclanes post to be entertaining.

This is what I would go with (excluding the AS teams).  Kerfeld and Worrell are question marks.  Couldn't think of better relievers off the top of my head.

   '86   '87
1   Strwby   Gibson
2   Baylor   Brnsky
3   Jacksn   DaEvns
4   Armas   Hrbek
5   Jones   Gaetti
6   Burks   WClark
7   Joyner   Brookn
8   DwEvns   CDavis

B   DCincs   JClark
B   Dwning   Mldndo
B   Hndrsn   Lemon
B   Herndz   Nokes

SP   Ryan   Tudor
SP   Clemens   Blyleven
RP   Kerfeld   Berenguer
RP   McDowel   Worrell

I'm pretty sure they're all from 1987.  Except for when they are incorrect.  Example: Tim Raines hit 18 HR's in '87, not 20.  He did bat .330 though.

The all-stars are from '87, and including them would give the '87 team an unfair advantage.

The '86 team includes Houston which gives them a huge disadvantage.

Maybe Gantry's using the Cockney rhyme scheme from Ocean's 11, implying that Mclane's controller smells like trouble.  This seems a likely explanation, especially since Mclane pees on his controllers to make them tougher.
