This thread will contain all the live updates for the upcoming RBI Tourament on Saturday, May 4th, 2002. The festivities get underway at 2pm and we'll update every match and round.
Thread is sticky and locked, meaning it'll be at the top of the RBI Forums and can only be edited by Lips & myself. It's strictly for updates, we'll make other thread for commentary...
Things are starting a little late, we're still prepping the rooms and the like. First game will probably start around 2:45....
The tournament draw has been made. Here it is:
Round 1:
Mark vs. Gantry
Potsie vs. Lips
Round 2:
Gantry vs. Potsie
Lips vs. Mark
Round 3:
Mark vs. Potsie
Lips vs. Gantry
First name listed gets team choice and seat, while second name gets controller...
Game 1:
Gantry (Ca) - 20
Mark (Det) - 9
Slaughter in the fifth inning. Sperling was definitely rusty, Gantry outhomered him 12 to 4. One thing that is worrying me is the amount of BOPs that happened - 7 BOPs and one foul-ball glitch in 5 innings. Hopefully that won't continue...
Game 1:
Lipitz (Cali) 11
Potsie (Detroit) 8
A very ugly game, to say the least. I couldn't get a hit until Wilfong in the eighth spot. Wilfong was the big man last game with 3 HRs. The BOPs continued, though. Potsie claimed three, two off of Pettis.
Game 2 between Mark (Cali) and Gantry (Detroit) is underway.
Game Two of Gantry & Mark:
Gantry (Det) - 16
Mark (Cali) - 9
10 homers for Gantry compare to 7 for Mark. I played terribly, had 4 runs after 6 or 7 innings. But Gantry takes the series against Mark 2-0, and is 8-0 against Mark in the last three years...
Lips & Pots are up now playing game two of their series...
Game 2:
Pots (Boston) 15
Lips (Detroit) 5
Another ugly game... I had a great first inning, getting all 5 runs in it, but then I bottomed out. Potsie came to play as Dwight Evans had 7 RBIs in his two at-bats.
Onto round two...Pots and Gantry are up. So far, Detroit has lost three games...
Dah-Nah!!
Game 5:
Potsie (Bos) - 21
Gantry (Det) - 20
Potsie wins it on a bottom of the 9th homer by Dwight Evans. He and Wilfong are the heroes today (Evans had 7 RBIs in 2 ABs last game), tourney time brings out the best in players....
It is a terrible day for Detroit - they are 1-4 through five games. Last year, Detroit won the first 6-7 games they played...
Gantry won the HR battle 13-12, but came out short. Gantry and Potsie are both 2-1 with one slaughter. Next game is absolutely huge, winner will most likely make the finals...
Round2, Game 1:
Lips (Detroit) 7
Mark (Cali) 6
Another third terrible game for me, but I came up with the huge W...and I mean HUGE. I had only one solid inning against Mark. I was up 7-1 going into the 9th, but Mark came back...so close that I had to sub Levan in, in the ninth against Reggie Potatoes Jackson. Levan fucked him up, and the game ended in my favor. I was happy for the victory, but still all three of my games have been horrible. Hopefully, I'll blow up soon with some mondo runs.
Like Gantry said, his game against Pots right not is just gigantic. Huge Finals implications...
I went on camera saying I would kick Potsie's ass after last game, and I did...
Gantry (Cali) - 21
Potsie (Det) - 11
Five inning slaughter. I broke the record for the most homers in the first 5 innings with 16. Potsie played very well, but I would not be denied....
Rob Wilfong went yard three times again!!! He leads all players in dingers this tourney...
I stand at 3-1 with two slaughters and Potsie is 2-2 with one slaughter. The mind-numbingly-awful Sperling and Lips face off in their second game...
Round 2, Game 2:
Lips (Cali) 12
Mark (Detroit) 11
You know what...Once again, a horrible game. I'm really hoping for my A-Game still. My A-Game just hasn't showed it's face yet, though. I really hope it does. I have Gantry in the last round before the finals. Winner of Game 1 between the two of us advances to the finals for sure as the winner would be 4-1. Both Gantry and I are rooting for Mark to come out of his shell right now, as we don't want Tie-Breakers to become a factor.
Potsie and Mark are at it right now...
Game 9:
Gantry (Cali) - 16
Lips (Det) - 9
All FINALS BABY!!!! I'm in automatically with a 4-1 record... If Potsie beats Sperling in the next game, he's in against me. Potsie loses and Lips beats me, then he is in. The current game is critical...
WOO HOO!!!!
Potsie takes game two against the awful sperling...
So it's me and Potsie in the finals...
Game one... Gantry takes an 8-1 lead into the bottom of the 3rd inning and the game resets... Basically we have to start over... Potsie comes on strong but eventually Gantry wins 23-21 off a Tony Armas foulout...
Fantastic game, onto game 2..
Late Update...
Potsie went on to win Game 2 & 3 of the finals, to win the championship this year.
Congrats, Potsie!!
We just missed the 5 year anniversary of Gantry blowing a chance at a Championship
I'm just disappointed that Potsie didn't post in this thread, so that we could get another look at his wonderful, hideous aviator...
Wilfong is leading all players in dingers this year as well, though we're only 5 innings in...
