Title: Question: Robby Thompson
Post by: VerlairWightSL on 07/04/06, 01:17:13 AM
I had a question about him: I wasn't following baseball in 1996, and I wonder what happened to RBI'er Robby Thompson. He just retired and vanished in thin air. Guess he was so bad in RBI Baseball 1 because real people sub him for Aldrete.

Okay, enough fucking around...did he get hurt, released or what else? All it says on Wikipedia that he played his last game on August 22, 1996.

i'm guessing he got released, since he didn't hit above .223 in his final three seasons

Granted FA from Giants at end of '96. Then signed ML deal with Cleveland for '97. Probably released/retired during spring training

I had him on a fantasy team in approximately 1990-1991.

Seeing that little gold cup trophy on a baseball card was one of the ultimate thrills in opening a pack of cards at that time

Unless that sucky piece of gum was stuck to the card

I opened some packs of 87 Topps a couple of years ago.  I tried to chew a piece of that gum.  It tasted like dust and never coagulated into actual gum.   It was a disgusting powder that nearly made me puke.  Not everything gets better with age

i still have many unopened packs of 87 and 88 topps, possibly some 89 as well.  i still always 'eat' the gum when i open a pack.  i say eat because there is no possible way to chew it.  i think it tastes good, but that could be the nostalgia that i'm tasting.

I hired thompson for a few months in like 98 or 99 to blow in my rbi cartrage when it messed up I thought it was a perfect job since he really did "blow" in the game, I had to fire him though I after I caught him opening all my old packs and eating the gum and tearing up all the bill spiers cards
