Title: Spilman!
Post by: Gantry on 04/10/02, 08:05:52 PM
Played a rare official (aka drinking) game with San Fran...  Spilman went 5-6 with 4 HRs, so solid!

Did lose to Lips on a bottom of the 9th dinger to the X-Factor 19-18, but an enjoyable game nonetheless...

4 homers is very impressive for Spilman, hell 4 homers is awesome for anyone in RBI. I usually expect the 1-time token homer, but multiple homers is always nice to see.

Well that last post by Burnzky was by GPines, forgot to log out. Another free one for Aaron.

4 dingers is a bit more common in our games, but you'll typically see one 4 HR game every 5 games or so.   It was good to lace up with the Giants last night, been playing straight Cali in preparation for the tourney...

Potsie crushed last night, three slaughters in three games.  Fucking Detroit is winning a good 80% of the games right now, starting to get very annoying...

that is why detroit is on up there in our power rankings right behind boston... the only reason boston is supreme is because of that guy who pitches for the yankees now who got lit up yesterday.  always nice to see that a-hole lose.

On our games, Detroit is firmly entrenched at #1, their  offense is unstoppable.  If they are getting production from the bottom of the order, the are pretty much impossible to beat consistently....

the bottom of the tigers order is better than the top of the astros, giants, cardinals and mets.  then, of course, there is their pinch hitters who are the most versatile in the game.   Detroit is a stellar offensive club with very little pitching... something like the Texas Rangers of today.

Now that I look at it, Detroit has the best 1,2,3 and 8 hitters in the game, at least for straight pitch and no All-Stars.  Considering that Chili Davis hasn't done anything since college and they might have the best hitters at 5 of the 8 positions.  Throw in Sheridan, Madlock and Bergman and this team is a force...

Just thinking about the Tigers is making me mad....

i think that putting in mr maddog at number 5 makes them definately have the best 5 hitter...very solid...they are just stacked...and i almost regret the fact that i have developed such a repore with the squad that i love playing with them , for good or bad.....and tom brookens rules by the way....just in case anyone forgot

Mad dog at no. 5 is the best move for that team.  I have tried him in the clean up spot a lot, and he does look good in that spot, but he is more comfortable at 5.  PS for cleanup.  I know I have said this before, but he is better that Matty Nokes.  I tried to go with the odds the other day by subbing Heath for Sweet Lou (facing a lefty starter), but that didn't work too well.  Plus, AT struggled because his DP partner wasn't there.

nokes hits too many homeruns to merit his riding the pine.  i would put sheridan in for lemon but not in the 4 spot.  madlock is definately in the game whether it is for hearndon or brookins...  doesnt matter.

I would have to say in straight pitch Detrot would be ranked #1, but in curve style Clemens will be unhittable for about 4 innings, Detroit doesn't have that on the hill. So in curve-style I would have to say that Boston is #1.

The Sox and NY are far and away the best teams in my opinion.  You cannot deny Burks and Armas, nor the power/speed combination that the Miracle Mets bring to the table.  Doc Gooden is my friend.

the mets must play better for you alarge than they do for us cause they are impotent as far as i am concerned.  they have speed but dykstra and mookie dont hit the ball on the ground.  there are only two teams weaker... the cards and the stros.

my favorite team right now is minnesota.

I just seem to be more consistent with the mets than any other team on the game.  I find that holding up on the directional pad when swinging increases the frequency of ground balls, so you might want to try that in order to get your speedsters on base.  A leadoff single with Dykstra almost always equals a run.  As for the Mets being impotent, I wouldn't go that far even if One-Nut Kruk was on the roster.

The Mets suck.  Dykstra goes 1 for 4 every game, and Mookie is even worse.  Hernandez is a very weak 3 hitter.  Carter's hair is stupid.  And Straw is the streakiest hitter in the game.  Their bench sucks too.  Gooden is the only guy that keeps them in any game.

i concur with you dill all the way...  you forgot to mention the glue that holds that team together... shortstop, rafael santana... damn he is good!

Dill defintiely gets the piss-n-vinegar poster award, always good for a laugh!  You should meet my friend Nick, y'all would get along quite nicely. Though he plays with New York, and loses 90% of his games...

I can't get much going with the Mets.  In straight pitch, they don't have the power to get things done.  I'm a huge fan of Straw, but the rest of the team doesn't bring it.  HoJo (who got me 5 dingers in a game) and Teufel are decent, but they aren't at Rupperto or Sheridan level.  I'm Keith Hernandez is no Wally Joyner and Santana is straight up poo.   If ALarge has found a technique to get Dykstra and Mookie on base consistently, then they would be a much better team.  As for me, they get their 1-4 like Dill said.  The top of the order is key for the Mets...

As far as curve teams go, the Mets hold their own only because of Gooden.  The Dyke and Mook never get on and the rare times they do, the boppers like to line the ball at infielders - The Straw hits as many liners to infielders that lead to double-plays than he hits homeruns.
Boston is the top of curve play here in Milwaukee, Detroit, San Fran they can hold their own.
Peace

Guy, what's your take on Minnesota and Blyleven?

gooden might keep them in the game but he is pitching with no room for error...  their offense can not come from behind... if gooden is on, you have a chance to scrape a few runs across to get the win.
