Title: Personal records/oddities while playing RBI
Post by: Sarc on 07/31/06, 12:22:35 PM
Hey all, just thought I'd post a new thread seeing what other people have as their own "personal" records, either against the computer or another player. Here are a couple of mine:

Perfect Games: 2 [against players]

No-Hitters: To many to count accurately. Don't get me wrong, it doesn't happen every day, but I don't go so far as to make a mental note of how many I've ever had. I don't even try against the computer. Against players though I probably have around 3 this year.

I also once got no hit by my buddy once, then the next game I no  hit him with SF.  ;)

The two times I've been no hit it's been while I was SF and HO. This is when we first got the game and I knew that HO sucked ass.

Consecutive HR's: 7 [against the computer] With DT: Gibson, Evans, Nokes, Sheridan, Lemon, Whitaker, Brookens.

Against a player: 4 with DT. Tramell, Gibson, Evans, Nokes.

Times batting around: 3 [against the computer] 2 against a player

Most runs: 34 [against computer] 22 against my brother [straight pitch 9 innings, scored big in the top of the ninth]

Triple plays: To many to recall against the computer, but against a real player: 5. Usually happens with people on 1st and 2nd. 5-4-3.  or a line out and they don't have time to get back to the base

This one kinda has me confused, you've only batted around twice? Or you've batted around twice during the same inning?

Oh, yeah guess that wasn't clear. Yeah I mean in the same inning. Otherwise it's not really a big deal huh?  ;)

I don't really get a chance to play a lot of other people except for my brother. He doesn't like to play all the time because I win 85% of the games. We play curve pitch, or whatever term you want to call it, usually. Up until about a week ago that is. He is getting kind of pissy so I thought maybe this would even up things a bit and make it more fun for him. As a rule of thumb I always just use one "starting" pitcher and let him use/do whatever he wants. I'd say my brother is a excellent player, I'm just better I suppose. He's starting to get sick of straight pitch now though. I've consistently beat him with SL while he's been the NL. I've scored an unusually high amount of runs with SL playing straight pitch.

A perfect game with 24 K's.
4 pitches, 4 bombs for Reggie Jackson in one game.
12 sb's with the cards.
A 62 inning scoreless streak by SF's pitching staff in a prestigious RBI league in the Bay Area back in HS.
Two triple plays in the same game.

Not a personal record but sort of an "oddity" I guess.  I was playing RBI at my family summer cottage...in a heated Boston/Detroit match up with a buddy.  The tv and console are in a separate bunkhouse that only gets used when we have parties up there.  Somebody months earlier had left a half-finished bottle of budweiser on the shelf next to the chair I was sitting in.  I put my own half-finished beer next to it...(you can see where this is going.)  Focused on my game I grabbed the wrong beer, took a healthy swig and then just froze.  Got up, ran to the bathroom and spit out two jelly-bean size mold balls.  Both were greenish white and furry.

-5 career homers with Ozzie Smith.
-I have taken a grounder to thrid and run the 3B to first and beat Tony Armas for the out 3 times. (Twice int he same game against GoReds)
-11-inning complete game 2-1 win for Mike Witt (against a great human player using Detroit).  Trammell lead off with a homer I think, despelling the rumor that "As Alan Trammell goes, So go the Tigers"
- Most career wins while wearing only a hat and/or shoes/sandals (3)
- Most homers hit with my penis (3; Jack Clark 1, Vince Coleman 1, Tony Pena 1)
- 5-5 day with Nolan Ryan and he scored 4 runs and drove in 5 or 6
These are just a few of my credentials......

*Not all of my records include some form of nudity.

Drinking beer when it's cold will help you make this a non-issue in the future.

I believe I have a walk-off homerun with Ozzie Smith - in a 22 or so inning game against Strassy.

We used to have old-school nintendo triathalons. Best of 3.  I won a see-saw 12-11 RBI game in extras, lost a 5-4 shoot-out in ICE Hockey and then pulled out a series victory by thrashing of my brother in GOLF with the help of a 26 on the front nine.

doug decinces just hit a ball off the pitcher's face and the ball was fielded by the catcher.  no out was recorded as there was a runner on third.

I  think I listed my records on another post, I only remember a few of them.  But I did field an entire inning once where I never moved any of my fielders, and got 3 straight outs.  They were all either grounders or lineouts, all I did was press A the entire (short) inning.

I've also hit homeruns off the scoreboard where the ball went right through a number zero.

Then there's my infamous game where I hit 5 balls off the top of the rightfield wall with Wally Backman, and none went for homeruns.  Was in 5 consecutive at-bats also!

And my gargantuan homerun with McGwire, I've told Gantry about it before, maybe others, I think I posted it somewhere here.  But the ball actually started coming DOWN when it left the stadium, I never saw it once it left the screen, but when it came down, it made a thunk like when it hits a wall or a fielder makes an error, then scrambled graphics appeared along the leftfield seats, then the ball rolled down from wherever it landed, and stopped in the stands.  The word "homerun" hadn't appeared yet, not even the music played.  As it turned out, I had to run the bases to get credit for my homer.  Very weird.

I pitched nine innings of perfect game against Strassy with Danny Cox, only to lose the perfect game in the tenth inning.  I believe I still won the game.

Once hit 12 home runs in a row against the computer off a tired Bruce Hurst, with the Giants, of all teams.

Once won a game 8-0 and got only 8 hits, all solo home runs.

Once had 22 errors in a game by getting a force out and having the first baseman chuck the ball into the wall after the play was over.

Was beating my friend Drunken Steve by 6 or 7 runs when I hit the longest home run in the history of video games with McGwire, and the power went out while the ball was on its way down.

One time I think, with McGwire (or someone with huge power), I hit a popup right in front of home plate, but the ball kept going up, and up, and up, making the real high-pitched sound, then when it got as high as it could go, the sound changed back to a low popup noise and still was rising a bit, before it was caught.

I played a few games of RBI today, and I went 0-5 or 0-6 with Mark McGwire in one of them.  That NEVER happens.  Everything was popping up, I was probably off with my timing  a bit.

I also had the bases loaded in another game, the next hit was an obvious home run, but I had two guys running towards the same base and the wrong one reached first and was called out.  So I got a 3-run homer instead, but I got the full fireworks display.  And there was obviously less than 2 outs when it happened.

I hit 2 homers in a game today with Larry Herndon, I think that's a personal record of mine.

I also got 3 hits in a game by Fernando Valenzuela...but I kept letting the computer score to eliminate the 10-run rule.  But it's still 3 hits nonetheless, and by a pitcher.

I also won a game today 4-3, I was San Francisco vs. the Nationals, all of the 7 runs were from homeruns, 5 of them were solo (I had 4 solo hr for SF), and the Nat's hit a 2-run and a solo homer.  Nothing really spectacular.

i just scored 15 runs in the first inning against the computer for a mercy win.

all 15 runs were scored before 1 out was recorded.  there were no errors and only one fielder's choice.  hitting is contagious.

A few days ago I started playing this again.  I have a couple new personal records, one is of a dubious honor.

I was 5-5 in a game with Gary Carter (again I let the computer score to keep it under 10 runs), the first four hits were homeruns, and I got a single for the last at bat.

The other one......I was Boston against California,  I gave up 4 straight home runs to them, using Roger Clemens:

(Pettis, DeCinces, Joyner, Jackson).

And that's it for now.

If you steal home and right as the pitch gets there you go back turn back and run towards thrid (if you are far enough down the line) the catcher will take off after you, once he does, head back home, the angle of the catcher running from home to third give you enough to squeek by.  Im not sure if this is actually possible, but I have had a human opponent run right by vince before.
Title: Re: Personal records/oddities while playing RBI
Post by: TβG on 02/06/07, 01:23:01 PM
i would think that the computer would cover home plate first, not just chase right away, a human opponent would differ, by running straight at the base stealer right away, or at least have that option.
Title: Re: Personal records/oddities while playing RBI
Post by: Briznock on 02/06/07, 01:51:17 PM
I will have to test this... i think if you are already heading back to thrid when the screen switches, the computer would (or should) have no programmed reason to step on home first, and would either throw or run to third, and I know they run at you if you are close enough...

Title: Re: Personal records/oddities while playing RBI
Post by: ultimate7 on 02/06/07, 02:02:16 PM
The CPU always protects the advancing base first.  I'm fairly sure that it will always run to home first in this situation, but a test is a good idea.

I don't believe it's possible to steal home successfully in RBI.  Maybe there's a way, I dunno.  The catcher always covers home plate when you try and steal home.  Maybe if you can take off just before the ball hits the catcher's mitt you could do it, and the catcher wouldn't cover, but I doubt it.

Has anyone here ever thrown to a base for an out, but quickly threw the ball to another base, and the out is never recorded?  You have to be fast and have good timing to do that, it's happened to me a few times, it's kinda funny too.  There should be a glossary term for it if not already.

All the time.  It's important to recognize however that sometimes this "error" occurs because the guy covering the base may not be there just yet.

I do this shit all the time...

And on the stealing home thing... If you get your guy headed back to third as the screen changes, there shouldn't be an "advancing base" to the CPU.  I could very well be wrong but it seems like I remember the CPU just darting to third.  Im sure I will forget this tonight so someone else try it.

I do the same thing.  It's especially embarrassing when it's not on a double play - I always throw the ball around the horn after a bases-empty out, and I've had instances where my first baseman threw to second too quickly and the batter reached.

If you have the 1B throw to first , sometimes he'll throw it into RF and the out is not recorded so the batter advances all the way to 3rd.

Ah yes, where it seems like he just catches the ball and then for no reason throws the ball over his shoulder to the outfield like its a hot potato.

I batted around the American League order two full times the other day.  Cal Ripken led off the inning, I got up to him again, then went around once more, before Cal made the 3rd out of the inning.  I scored 19 runs that inning.  Quite a few homers too, but I forget how many I had.

With STL as my official team, I think your winning ways against me have come to an end.

These aren't really oddities or personal records, but just fun things to try:

hitting a homerun into the black box (we all know that one)

hitting a homer into a zero on the scoreboard

hitting a homer into the lights

hitting a homer in between the 1st/2nd or 2nd/3rd flagpoles

hitting a homer through the LF or RF wall (no explanation)

hitting a homer with Ozzie Smith (always exciting)

hitting a homerun with a pitcher (has it ever been done)?

hitting a homer in between the lightpoles

throwing out a runner at 1st from the outfield

catching a fly ball in the LF or RF corners of the field

hitting an extremely high popup, right in front of home plate

hitting a homerun into the triangles just to the left and right of the black box under the scoreboard (I've done it)

hitting a foul ball that goes straight back of home plate

getting an inside the park homer with a pitcher

getting a hit that lands on the LF or RF chalk

throwing a 9-inning no-hitter with one pitcher

winning a game by hitting zero homeruns

winning a game by bunting every at bat

There are lots more weird things to do I guess and some of these are already well-known by everyone.

There are a few people here who claim to have seen it done, but the only one I can recall who did it while a member of the forums (usually, the stories are of homeruns hit done years ago) was Baines, who hit one through the wall with Nolan Ryan on his arcade machine.  I believe Baines, and I think it's possible for pitchers to hit homers through the wall but not over the fence.

I've never seen a pitcher homer, but one of my main bases for belief (other than the claims by Baines and others) occurred in a Fantasy RBI game a couple years ago, when Jimmy Key hit one off the base of the wall.  It was a custom ROM, not a cartridge, but it used the default pitcher data, and the game was recorded so everyone could see it.

Well I managed to do one of the above today that I listed.  I won a game by 10 runs without hitting a homer.  I was American vs. Houston.

Am 13
Ho.....1

Time of game - 10:00 (probably more seconds though).

Glenn Davis hit a solo homer in the bottom of the 5th to break up Henke's no-hit bid.

My stats:

AB - 32
H - 18
2B - 12
3B - 2
HR - 0
K - 0
BB - 0
SB - 0
ER - 1 (My 2B bobbled it, so I just let it sit there until the runner got close, then tagged him out, and the hit wasn't recorded)!

I did something similar against National.  Schmidt got a hit to the outfield, I let him get to 3rd base, so he stopped. But I made sure there was a fielder to the left of 3rd baseman (I kept throwing the ball from 2nd to 1st, and back so it wouldn't go to the next hitter), so I purposely walked off 3rd with the third baseman, and threw the ball to where the fielder was standing. Schmidt took off, but I had the ball, got him out at home, no hit recorded, heh heh.

Houston had 16 AB's, 1 hit, 1 homer, and 1 error also.

And I had my greatest inning ever a few days ago.  In 16 minutes I beat St. Louis 38-1, in 3 innings.  I must've batted around the order almost 3 full times, as I scored 35 runs in the 3rd inning (3 in the 2nd).   McGwire had 2 grand slams in the inning, everyone must have had at least 1 hit.  Here are the stats:

AB - 51
H - 43
2B - 17
3B - 4
HR - 11
SO - 1
BB - 1
SB - 0
ER - 0

The Cards had 11 AB's, 3 Hits, 1 double, 1 Hr, and 2 errors, and they were beating me 1-0 after the first inning.

I also beat the Cards with California 16-0 in one inning, in 5-something minutes.  17/20 in hits, 6 doubles, 2 triples, 5 homers, 1 whiff.
