Hey everyone,
I was looking around on ebay yesterday, and picked up this gem of Ruppert for a couple of bucks (see attachment). I am not a fan of buying autographed cards, but I thought this one was cool, since he's my favorite RBI'er (besides E.D.!). I also picked up a Rex Hudler card (my other favorite player, but only appears on RBI 2 and 3)
After finding Ruppert, I started typing in names of other RBI'ers. I found autographed cards of Mike Heath, Bill Madlock, and several others for a dollar or so. If you want some cheap memorabilia of your favorite RBI player, this might be a good way to do it. Obviously, there is no guarantee that the signature is authentic, but it's pretty cool anyway
81 Donruss? Quality!
We did the same thing, EBay has lots of cheap, weird shit like that. I got Sperling a Tom Brookens autographed United Way receipt for a buck awhile back. In addition to this gem, which I belive was a whopping $2:
The great thing about buying a Brookens or Ruppert or any RBI great, who was...not so great in real life...is that it kind of serves as its own certificate of authenticity.
I mean, who would spend time forging signatures of Ruppert Jones and Tom Brookens?!? OR Harry Spilman and Steve Lake for that matter!!!
I bet Brookens popped mad bitches in his day.
I bet he still does...
That stache is probably full of forensic evidence.
I'm the same way...
My good friend in New York and I play R.B.I. whenever we see each other, which is about once a year. The last time we played each other, he beat me with a game-winning homer in the ninth by Danny Heep. So, what does he give me for Christmas? An autographed Danny Heep card.
And to top it off, he gave me an autographed piece of wood (from the Cavaliers' court, I think) by Bob Sura, who killed me with a buzzer beater in some basketball game we were playing.
But the best part, for his birthday, I wrote a letter to Tony Pena and sent it to the Kansas City Royals. I included a letter to Tony saying how into R.B.I. Baseball we were and if he wouldn't mind signing a card for me and including a special message with it. I included my friend's address with the letter just on the off chance he would send it to him directly. I had beaten my buddy in R.B.I. with two homers by Pena (and btw, we play curve style), so I was going for broke here.
So about a month ago, my buddy calls me from work in the middle of the day and says, "You dick. Did you forge this?"
I didn't know what he was talking about, but it turns out he got the Tony Pena card in the mail from the Royals and it said, "Tom, Duane owns you at R.B.I. Better luck next time, Tony Pena."
New-found respect for Tony Pena over here!

Duane, you're a funny guy. That's such a great idea. Get an actual RBI player to talk shit for you. Unbelievable.
That is awesome!

Truly magnificent, please get that scanned it and I'll put on the website...
I think Pena should get a special recognition on the site for being a cool mother fucker
he now officially stays in my lineup...

Seriously.....that is a fucking tremendous post considering it was your 4th post on the site. WELCOME aboard to dee-nee. That was fucking spectacular.
I can't say much more about that post that hasn't already been said. Great job.
Tony Pena is the man. What a great idea to try out and what a better guy to actually do it for you. Very cool.
I too beat my buddy with Pena once (he was the NL All-Stars.) It was game 5 and I hit a dong. Maybe Pena would do it twice? Nah, can't steal that idea. Far too original.
Tony is ALWAYS in my lineup. He is the only consistent HR hitter for me on that team. well Jim lindeman too. Anyway. That Tony Pena thing is fucking awesome. Could very well be the best peice of shit talking EVER done. But easily the best RBI shit talking ever.
I have a sweet RBI moment though.. No autographs, no shit talking, but it was easily the greatest threesome ever assembled on any golf course. I was in Cooperstown the day before Ozzie got inducted two years ago. We were heading into town and pass a golf course. I look out the window and went apeshit. I told my dad to park the car and we have to fucking go down there to that course. We parked about 5 blocks away. And my brother and I hauled balls down there. Im glad we did too because Ozzie Smith, Vince Coleman, and Willie McGee were playing together. I couldnt believe my eyes. I was in heaven. I was in such a rush though i didnt have a pen or sharpie or anything. So all i got was an Ozzie Smith handshake. I was a little upest that E.T. and Vince didnt come over too. I have some pics if i can find them.
Tony is the man. That is by far the greatest peice of shit talking ever done in the history of man.

I'm bumping this for the Tony Pena post, only 2 months old, but anyone that hasn't seen it yet, needs to see it.
Good bump, I just caught the post for the first time. Very solid autograph!!!!
I had the unfortunate task of taking my childhood baseball cards from my parents house to my own (guess I'm officially grown up now)...and came across my book of autographs.
I counted how many NES RBI autographed baseball cards I have in there, and it came to 12. :)
Here's from memory: Ellis Burks (5-6 of 'em), Tony Gwynn (3), Don Mattingly (2), Alan Trammell (2), Will Clark (1), Ryne Sandberg (2), Marty Barrett (4), Tim Raines (2), Mike Schmidt (1), Kirby Puckett (3), Ozzie Smith (1--simply signed, "Ozzie"), and Matt Nokes (2).
I also have autographs of George Brett, Wade Boggs, Andre Dawson, Nolan Ryan, and Gary Carter...and I have a cracked bat of Jose Cruz.
...all from when I was a kid. ;)
Digging through the archives, I found this, an unbelievable thread. Gantry - I have to say that the autographed Tom Brookens card is possibly the best thing I've ever seen. The only way it could be better is if the same picture had been used on the '87 Topps, with the wood border on it.
My question is, does anyone know what Rob Wilfong is doing? I'd like to try something similar with him, since one of my friends keeps denying Wilfong's greatness, even though he gets hammered every time he faces the Angels. I figure Wilfong would be into it since he can't have much going on these days.
And anyone new that hasn't seen it should read post #7 on this thread (The Tony Pena story). It has to be a top ten all time Dee-Nee posting.
Tony Pena is a Greek golden God...
That's one of the best posts ever but it seems like Duane shot his wad. Not much more after that. Then again, I guess it's better to burn out then fade away.
Nah, Duane is still here. Just lurking. ;D
I do my best to check out Dee-Nee as often as I can, but with a full load at school and bartending five nights a week at night, I don't get a ton of time to check out my favorite sites on the web as much as I used to.
But yeah, my buddy still has the Tony Pena card. He actually put the card in a case, had it put on a plaque and to this day it hangs in his living room in New York. And throw in the fact I've met his wife on many occassions, that says a lot. Hehe.
A few months ago, he actually sent me a piece of basketball hardwood with a message on it -- "Duane, you should know better than to leave me open. Bob Sura."
That was from when he and I had a war at NBA2K on the Dreamcast. I triple-teamed Chris Mullin (who had been killing me all game) and he kicked it out to Sura who drilled a three to beat me at the buzzer. So, I guess we've both gotten the shit-talking done via real players now.
You guys should try it, though. Tony was a great guy about it (obviously) and for those of us who are into R.B.I. as much all of us presumably are, it's a great way to steal some bragging rights.
Good to see this thread is still getting some notice, though. That's awesome.
On a bright note -- just as a little side bar -- I actually secured my own R.B.I. arcade! Whoooo!
Hope everyone is doing well.

I must of have missed the Sura story the first time around. Kick ass!
Bob Sura = 2nd greatest Seminole of all time, behind the Alien, Sam Cassell
Duane, Can scan a copy of the Pena letter, I think it would be a great addition to Dee-Nee
I just saw this certified autograph of one of my fav RBI guys
Chet Lemon
Has him in a Detroit uniform!
Current bid is under $2 and shipping charges are $2.50, I think
Here's the link.

I added a pic to save some the trouble of the link
Detroit would be unstoppable if they had Rupperto on their bench...
Definitely try to get a scan of Pena for Dee-Nee, it would be a wonderful addition and you guys would get full credit..
I've never thought of that Gantry, but you're right. If Ruppert were on Detroit's bench, it would put an end to the "who do you sub for Larry Herndon" debate.
Gibson
Evans
Nokes
RUPPERT
That would be scary!
Bumping again for the Pena letter
Hey guys,
Wow! Totally just logged in for the first time in almost three years. I was cleaning up all my bookmarks on my PC and totally came across the Dee-nee link buried in some folder that I never check. For those who have posted here for years, I'm the guy with the Tony Pena story from the start of this thread. Totally love the fact you guys all dug that story.
We're in the (ongoing) process of moving out of our place at college and I actually ran across our RBI logbook the other day. A great idea in case none of you have ever done it...
We started it with the regular NES RBI game, but now we use it solely for the arcade that we keep downstairs in the game room. But we have a giant spiral notebook that we keep on top of the arcade and after every game, we write down the runs, hits, errors and winning and losing pitchers. We have a notes section to keep track of special moments (huge errors, rare no-hitters -- curve style -- and the like). And to cap it off, we always register quotes that we've all said during the course of games. But the logbook is totally cool now because it got so much beer and alcohol spilled on it over the course of the last few years. But looking back at many of the quotes we wrote down from past games, it's hilarous! A few that come to mind...
"Another error by Galarraga! He's fucking cut!"
"Since when does the fucking Wizard boot two balls in the same inning?"
"How is it Tony fucking Gwynn can't see his feet but he can run a 4.2 to first every time he hits it in the hole?"
So I highly recommend a logbook if you've got a big group of guys that play together a lot. Oh, and if you have a spare TV like we do in our house, I also recommend moving it to the bathroom and hooking it up to an extra NES. Although, we've gotten some random looks from undergrads that come rolling through our place bombed at three in the morning and see two guys in the bathroom playing RBI... but eh, it's college.
Go Tony Pena!

I'm not pissed. Just disappointed. Like your parents when you were held back in third grade.
This Tony Pena story is gold. I can't belive how rad that is. Keep that card locked away for good!
Anyone got any Gary Gaetti or Rob Wilfong autographed cards? Now those would be spectacular.
Hey fknmclane, are you a Seminole by any chance? You mentioned both Sam Cassell and Bobby Sura in an older post. I went there myself. If you are an FSU'er, rock on dude!
