Title: Forums going down tonight
Post by: nightwulf on 08/27/06, 06:27:03 PM
Upgrading to the newest version of our forum software tonight. This will happen when I feel like it, and the boards will come back up when I feel like it. Eat a dong.

Er, I'll post a warning when I figure out when I can do this. Expect downtime to be 15-30 minutes.

Back up. Tried dicking with the search function while I had the forums down anyway, and mysqld puked.

Making the usual modifications ...

Ok. Removed links to various sites below for Gantry, made the logo above link to Dee-Nee, bolded thread titles on the index page, and resurrected the chat button. Remind me what else I'm missing.

The main reason I'm pushing this update is that there is (working) support for Captcha (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Captcha) images while registering. This seems to be working, so hopefully we'll see fewer spam fuckers.

I'm not sure if you two read the other thread,  but the search function isn't working, and the search for the search button appears to be missing.

Search has gone away for now. I'll try building an index tonight, but this will take the forums down for some time.

Apparently this is a common issue, and stems from your mysql server not supporting temorary tables. Oh Gantry!

MySQL 3 is starting to become a thorn in my sexy, sexy side.  I can't update any of my wikis anymore...

Dee-Nee server #2 has the hardware just about ready, but I'm saving the test install/upgrade for the next RHEL beta...

Will no search button decrease the amount of guests?

I notice there are  zero guests right now, which seems a bit odd.

i don't think so.  the lack of a search button doesn't prevent search web crawlers from finding all of our very special posts.  so i guess if you wanted a rudimentary search, search for whatever you want and "dee-nee" and it might come up.

Coming down at 3am (central) again to try and search for the search button. Expect to be down ~15 minutes.

Well, I give up. At this point, we can go back a version, or we can wait for the next version (evidently this bug is already fixed for it), or Gantry can upgrade mysql.

Searching does work when searching only topic titles.

I take that back. Using a silly hack suggested by another user at SMF's forums, search appears to be working. I hope.

Search working just peachy!

It's really time to actually plan the dee-nee upgrade, it's a long time coming...

I'm calling this upgrade a success. Recently I've gotten in the habit of checking the "members awaiting activation" list daily and removing at least two a day for being obvious spammers. I've not seen one since the upgrade (which added a captcha image to the registration screen).

Now we will be able to post Microsoft Excel files and PowerPoint slides.

Excel has been around for quite awhile, but just added support for word docs & powerpoint presentations...

I like the fact that when you are posting, a green bar goes across the top that says "LOADING"

(at least, when you edit a post it does that)

That's a new feature of RC3 for the SMF forum software.  Kind of handy, especially for troubleshooting purposes...

does anyone else think the green bar is sexy or is that just me?
