Title: Favorite (NOT best) player
Post by: TempoGL on 02/18/02, 09:03:42 PM
I am curious as to who everyone's FAVORITE player in RBI is.  I note that Marc Sullivan seems to have quite a few fans.  Skill should not be a consideration, it's about intangibles.  Such things are what makes me root for the Detroit Lions, John Stockton, Raef Lafrentz, Rudy Ruettiger and in RBI....Spike Owen.   Let me know what you think.

Good topic Strass...   Harry Spilman gets my vote for favorite player, I just love batting with him.  After that I would probably go Jim Lindeman....

I would have to say that I have a tie between Kirk Gibson, and Pat Sheridan, Sheridan is fun to hit with, he has some serious pop for a guy with only 6 homers.

I like rooting for the guys that suck...it makes their rare triumphs all the sweeter...

I would have to say that my favorite rbi player would be tom brunansky.  He's not the best but every once and a while he will have a good game.  I think burnsky sounds better though.

how about al pedrique... if he gets any ab's its a good day for him.   i think he and santana are right up there when it comes to least career ab's.  as for my favorite rbi player... it would have to be randy bush... the guy takes minnesota to another level.

I second Randy Bush, he's a stud...  Whenever I play Minnesota, my opponents live in fear of Randy Bush...

Bobby "the Grinch" of California gets my nod for favorite player (other than Mookie Wilson, who has been my favorite player since i was a kid).  The Grinch just seems to always come through in the clutch.  I'm always tempted to take him out, because i know he really doesn't have any skills, but he just seems to hit the big homer when i need it.

I'd have to agree with GPines.  I'm a big fan of Sheridan, and he just kicks the crap out of the ball game after game.  Best full-time substitute in the game.

My rankings will be revised this weekend to show this...

terry puhl has been carrying houston for the last couple of weeks for me... he has secured his spot in the 8th spot... i think he hits better when there is no pressure.

Definetly Dewey Evans.  He was by far my favorite player growing up and he just happens to kick ass in RBI also.  He's got power and he has a gun in right field.

i think dewey is a left fielder if i am correct... he succeeded yaz in a long line of bosox leftfield greats. that gun belongs to jim rice  who was a dh   go figure

Per the RBI manual - Rice in Left, Evans in Center, Baylor in right.  Of course that means nothing but FYI...

We shouldn't question the lifetime Red Sox Fans:

Right Field and 1b....  Two very impressive stats:

8 Gold Gloves
Most total homers in the AL from 81-90

Joe's unhealthy obsession with Dewey Evans is about as big as my obsession with mookie. Dewey was definitely the better player though. but that's alright.

On a completely different note, HOW BOUT SARAH HUGHES!! Granted, i hate figure skating as much as the next person, but seeing a fellow long island romp shit around the world makes me proud. even if she is ugly.  That cohen girl is gonna be hot too. Too bad she's only like 16.  Joe said he was gonna do her and get arrested.

I'm telling ya, Dewey was the man.  You're right about dewey in center in the game which is really screwed up.  He was definetly one of the best right fielders in Red Sox history.  In the greatest world series of all time in '75, in game 6 Dewey made what sparky anderson called the best catch he had ever seen the inning before Fisk hit the homer to win the game.  This of course was before i was born but dewey even won me over years after the catch in '75.  The line of left fielders at fenway you were talking about went, Teddy Ballgame, Yaz, Jim Rice, and then Mike Greenwell.  Never underestimate the power of a hardcore red sox fan!   8)

Hey, Joe. you forgot to mention dante bichette in that great line of leftfielders.

Solid with the Walling level mookie, it's all downhill from here....

And I was very disappointed with how Mike Greenwell's career turned out.  He looked tremendous in the late 80s and didn't really pan out.  That was the height of my baseball card collecting career and the '88 Greenwell was a coveted card.  Then again, I thought Rickey Jordan was going to be a top 10 player....

You mean Rickey Henderson wasn't a top ten player?  He was freakin' awesome...and can still hang at the age of 52 or however old he is right now.

I do remember Rickey Jordan.  Played for the Phillies, right?  I thought that guy was going to turn out into something also.

Yeah, Rickey Jordan on the Phillies, first baseman...

Speaking of Ricky Henderson, I heard that when he was playing with jon Olerud  in either Seattle or with the Mets, he asked about his helmet he always wears in the field, Olerud told him what the reason was, then Ricky said to him being dead serious, "you know I used to play with a guy in Toronto that had to wear the same thing".

I don't think Ricky is much of a team oriented guy.

Post by: Gwynn3k on 02/22/02, 03:19:58 PM
you mean team players aren't supposed to hang out in the clubhouse playing cards during the 7th game of the NLCS?  but you have to remember  ricky gets on and he will be a first ballot hall of famer even though he is one of the most selfish players to ever lace em up.

Post by: GPines on 02/22/02, 05:18:56 PM
I guess that old baseball saying is bullshit, "no one ever walked his way into the hall of fame"

Ricky finally broke the walk record, but I swear the 3 years prior to that he would only swing 3-2 count.

as far as taking pitches... rickey did his job as a leadoff man... in my opinion the best ever... as far as being a team player   thats like saying keanu reeves is a good actor.

my favorite players have to be tom brookens, wilfong, rich gedman and bill madlock....id go into battle with these men any day...

dewey, i was reading an article on him today oddly enough, also led the league in total bases between 81-90...the guy was just plain nasty....known more for his glove so im told...

i just plain hate everyone on the mets though....nell carter...dimebag darryl and the other drug addict....f'n hernandez...the two queefs at the top of the lineup (sorry mookie) and above all, mr. nancy lopez....the only one i like is mcdowell...he had some spunk
Title: Re: Favorite (NOT best) player

the mets are almost as impotent as the cards and stros...   anytime you get a win these teams it is satisfying.

kirby, that lovable goofy, short pudgy guy. my 6th grade english teacher said he played basketball against kirby one time (the teach was about 6'4").

i've also like mike aldrete, juan berenguer, and mookie

lately i have been jocking the twins after they carried me to the tengen belt.   gladden has reasserted himself in the leadoff spot.  the rat has reared his ugly grill on several occasions.  kirby has done more than expected for he is still overrated.  hrbek is hrbek,  burnzky is a rock in the order,  gagne is decent against lefties while bush is good against righties.  then there is the offensive mvp,  tim laudner who had an enormous night teeing of on anything pines delivered.  then even lombardozi had a decent night knocking two timely homeruns.

t and i went toe to toe last night using the twins and tigers....i took the series from him....senor smoke was not himself and he got rocked in two relief apperances and cost t the series 4-1.....then we did a random choice series...i got the cards and t got the chowds....i have a 2-0 lead with the bang bang cardinals lighting up the chowds for 24 runs in the first two games....they are looking good
Title: Re: Favorite (NOT best) player
Post by: Gwynn3k on 04/02/02, 02:05:21 PM
24 runs with the cardinals... in two games...  wow!   not so much for the cards scoring that many runs... but for t giving up that much with clemens...  how?
Title: Re: Favorite (NOT best) player
Post by: B on 04/04/02, 10:29:26 AM
it was a weird sight....clemens gave up 1 run on 4 hits in the first...and then he just got rocked around the rest of the game...the cardinals just kept poking out hits left and right...jack clark and lindeman both hit homers...and then schiraldi came in and pissed away the game....he's just not very good that schiraldi character....

and bob stanley has some incredible movement and putrid speed...
Title: Re: Favorite (NOT best) player
Post by: Gwynn3k on 04/04/02, 03:37:44 PM
if you dont hit the corners with those relievers and change speed they will give up a lead in a hurry.  stanley is most effective when he gets the righties to swing at his slider.  as for schiraldi, you have to get the ball inside consistantly so that the hitter isnt leaning out over the plate.

nothing is worse than seeing the cardinals dink you to death...

Bump.

It's all about Kirk Gibson.

And Vince Coleman.

Damn, that's an old post with some of the founding fathers.  It doesn't seem right with Strassy's Al Bundy avi though.  What was Strassy's aviator in the rstrass days?

by the way, my answer is Willie Mcgee, but I think everyone knew that already.

Quality bump.

I'd say Vince Coleman as well.  He isn't exactly under-appreciated (at least I don't think), but I would love to have a bunch of Vince Colemans on my squad.  Slap it the other way and watch the runs pour in.  I do wish he had better contact though.

Also, he isn't my fave, but I alway like to see Rich Gedman step to the plate.  I have had some good luck with him.

And mine is clearly Mattingly...but he doesn't get enough respect, either, since he's an all-star.  Damn, is that as dumb as it sounds?

My favorite player is also Don Mattingly. He is a great player. I'll never forget his years in the league. The Great years and the Bad years. People only wish they had a career like his or even played in the MLB. Don Mattingly you'll never be forgotten for all the hard work you put into becoming a great player. Thanks!

my aviator then was just the red sox player (mikeD style) with "SPIKE OWEN FOR LIFE" below it.  this was before the red sox became massively overblown media darlings, and before they had curt schilling.  so this is obviously before i hated the red sox.

and i have no idea why i mentioned raef lafrentz.  that strikes me as very odd.

a real shame about stockton, if only it wasn't the jordan era. best white point guard in nba history.

and for rbi, dewey evans is my choice for best sixth hitter in the game.
