Hey guys, I've been a fan of this site for a long time now, I've just never registered for the message board stuff, but I've been wanting to organize an RBI Baseball tourney out here in California, so I'm just wondering what kind of turnout I could get if I hosted one out here.
I live in the Central Valley, about 20 minutes outside of Fresno. I was thinking about doing a tournament in May of 2007, so if any of you live in California and would be interested, let me know, or any of you from outside California that would show up for the tourney, let me know also. It would be much like the tournament held in Iowa, with an entrance fee that would pay for food and prize money. I would discuss details later if it appears that I could get enough people for a decent tournament.
Anyways, this post is mainly to gauge the interest in a tournament out here...if there already is one out here, someone let me know. I guess my ultimate dream is for us to somehow organize a national tournament where we would start out with like 8 regional tournaments across the nation, with winners moving on to a national tournament, (or top 2 from each tourney...whatever). Anyways, that's just a silly dream of mine to happen someday, but for now just let me know if any of you would show up for a California tournament.
Hi lancemeister, welcome to the site. Broiler has a weekly tournament at his neighborhood bar (http://forums.dee-nee.com/index.php?topic=14743.0), it might be worth checking out if you really need an RBI fix.
Lance,
Name your city/town. I grew up in Kingsburg.
Also, I've been thinking about having another tournament here in Los Angeles sometime...in the future. I'd like to do it like Broiler, where we can have it at a bar instead of at someone's house.
I think there are enough Dee-Nee members in cali to make a yearly fest doable. But then again Cali is a big fkn state. Definitely post your town/county and the half dozen cali-based members of this boards (heavy posters, probably more total) can tell you how far away and how feasable...
I live in Madera...it's about 20 minutes north of Fresno. L.A. is like 4 from here, and I got no problem heading down there. When I started this thread I didn't realize how many Cali members there seems to be on this board, I think we could easily pull off a yearly tournament, it's just a matter of making it happen. I just moved down from Idaho about 6 months ago, so I don't really know any business owners around here that could host a tourney. It seems to me like the guy in the bay area that already has the weekly tourney going...that seems like an ideal situation where we could start the yearly tournament. If the bar owner would allow for one Saturday a year or something.
If people want one here in the Central Valley though, maybe as a sort of middle point for all of Cali, I'm sure I could pull something off, find somewhere to host it.
Well, I can certainly drive up for a weekend and stay with my family, so I would be in for something in the Valley. TBG is moving to the Central Coast, so it may be possible to rope him in. And the Fresno area might be close enough to get some of the Bay Area folks down as well.
Basically, I think you would just have to find a not-terribly-crowded sports bar and ask if you could use a couple of their TVs in exchange for bringing however many people are going to be there for the tournament. If I'm a bar owner, I have no problem letting people play a video game if that means 16 people eating and drinking there all night.
i am definately game to travel for a tournament. i am pretty sure i could bring at least 3 other guys from the bay area if the tournament had a big enough draw.
although you may want to consider not allowing me in your tournament, as my skills are sharper than they have ever been.
well then, looks like we could have a decent turnout, since I opened this thread just over an hour ago and we've already got like 8 prospective players or so. I've got a couple more guys that would show, so ideally we could end up with 16 teams. I'll let you guys know when I find a suitable venue.
Please, those of you who haven't said so yet, keep letting me know if you'll make it up here or not.
Good luck to your A's tonight, wanted to call you when they beat the Twins, but you didn't answer.
lance, i'll be psuedo-in the area... count me in if you have a good thing going by the time your date comes around. fighton, you could cruise up and maybe we could go together.
the key to newbies getting something together is commitment and momentum. if you don't keep posting for the next 8 months, your dream will fall apart. i guarentee there will be interest if you stick around and keep posting consistently.
Lance...why don't you attend the National RBI Tourney in Columbus OH to see how they go before hosting one? I did just that (attended the COTUT in Chicago) and it was extremely helpful...for example, you're not likely to have a tourney contained within one Saturday morning (when a bar would be more likely to be okay with the tourney)...
The OH Tourney is in June, 2007. You are welcome to attend! It is a blast.
Joe Dirt I might do just that, I've thought about trying to make the trip up to Ohio this year...it's just a matter of explaining to my wife that I'm flying to Ohio for a NINTENDO TOURNAMENT...she already knows I'm pathetic, but that might top it all. Of course she hears me talking about RBI all the time already with a buddy of mine, so it's all good I guess.
Anyways, I'd say as of now plan on having me in Ohio...where do you hold your tourney? A bar, community center, house, etc?
I might just postpone my tourney for July or something so I can see how you run your tournament. And by the way, I still think the way to go...and this board would be the place to organize it...get 8 guys spread across the country willing to hold tournaments, then top 2 from each tourney advance to national tourney. You have to admit that would be pretty sweet. Wow I'm a loser.
hey thanks guys, glad to know I'm fitting in...man I was checking out how many posts you all have...I have a long freakin' way to go. And seeing that I'm at Santan level...ouch that hurts.
Lance...good stuff.
Have you checked out the tourney pages yet? Here is mine: http://ohio.rbicentral.com/
Here is the COTUT: http://www.rbibaseballcotut.com/
In both cases, we held the tourney at a hotel...a bar presents too many variables for the host (talking a weekend long tourney with a lot of participants, not broiler's format--seems to work well under those conditions).
Both tourneys take the ENTIRE weekend...no doubt.
If your wife is anything like mine, she'll be happy for you that you can play a game with a bunch of other dolts who love it as passionately as you do (and perhaps bring her relief from hearing about it for a weekend)...
