Title: Best non-RBI baseball game
Post by: seddrah on 02/08/04, 12:42:59 AM
The last two games fucking suck, so don't vote for them, they are only included so I could have eight examples.

I would say that Baseball Stars is better then RBI.  But don't tell anyone I said that.

I loved baseball stars for the fact that you could edit player names and abilities.  I used to have a forumla for the rankings and I think for the power one the only two players who had a 15 in power were McGwire and Ruth.  I am sure that Bonds and maybe sosa would join them now.
Baseball stars all the way.  does anyone know of a baseball stars website?

As for PC games I think that the best would be High heat.  Most realistic as far as numbers.

Baseball stars was great for many reasons:

1. Computer could actually beat you (depending on teams)
2. Create team/win money/make team better
3. Change team & player names
4. League play with multiple players
5. Stats
6. Diving
7. Girls!
8. Silly teams (a horror monster team & a softball team)?
9. You can FIRE players!
10. The greatest reason of all - you can rob a home run then talk shiat about it!

For sure.  But it's no RBI.  That's just silly talk!  :P

Hey, where's Baseball Simulator 1.000?  That beats at least half the games on the list.  It's even old-school NES, plus the graphics are a lot like RBI.  Of course, Baseball Stars is great, for all the reasons MarquisEXB mentioned, and it got my vote without a second thought.

I've actually been playing a lot of Griffey lately, though - I just got an exercise bike, and my NES isn't working right now, which means that I'm limited to the SNES if I want to play a game while I ride.  The computer is a good challenge in that game, but I wish the gameplay was more RBI-like.  What we need is an RBI with a good computer opponend.  RBI 3 had a "hard" difficulty setting, but it's still not much of a challenge.

Im also debating which of the new titles to buy. For the longest time it was down to MVP and ESPN. I had World Series last year, and it looks like ESPN is going to be the same game with a new title....

Im not a 989 sports fan, but some of the features on MLB 2005 has me intrigued.

Well, one actually. Career mode.  I guess you can use "eye toy" to load your face onto your player. Then you start in the minors, and work your way through a career. Teams can sign, trade, and release you. You go through a "spring training" to determine your worth.  Im guessing you play as the team that your player plays on, not just your player, but I dont know that for sure.  You also have to set 10 personal goals before each season, and try to accomplish them.  I like the idea of a version of "franchise" mode, where your playing revolves around a player, instead of an entire franchise. I like the idea, of signing with a new team, or being traded, and/or working your way up from single A ball.

What do you guys think?

me and my friends will be considering the new addittion to our baseball collection soon, (all titles release in march).  unfortunately with the demise of 3do "high Heat" will be gone i guess.

we are anxious to see sega's espn baseball offering.

as far as best non-rbi game i would have to go with badnews baseball.... you rommers are going to have to check this game out, it is seriously the 2nd best baseball game.... look and playablity are identical to rbi but there is a 20 man roster... would love to have an editor for this badboy!

I voted for Baseball Stars, because it and RBI are my most beloved NES games.  I agree that robbing the Home Run is one of the ultimate thrills in 8-bit entertainment!  I would like to give a special nomination to Dusty Diamond's All Star Softball as well.  I loved that game!  I know it's not baseball, but close.

RBI, baseball stars, and temco superbowl were my favorite NES games ever.

Baseball Simulator 1000.  The gameplay is very, very similar to RBI and you could save a 150-game season, complete with individual player statistics.  Bloody incredible.

I changed the poll to add an "Other" and Baseball Simluator 1.000 instead of Mike Piazza & Atari Baseball.  Should give you more options based on what I read...

The thing that I didn't like about that game was the fact that the passwords were garbage.  With roms that isn't an issue though.

You must be thinking of a different game.  Baseball Simulator 1.000 had memory - it saved custom teams and season results on the cartridge without the use of passwords.  You may be thinking of RBI 2 or 3; I don't know of any other baseball games that would've had passwords, although I admittedly haven't played any of the Bases Loaded games in season mode.

From the list, I'd probably have to go with Baseball Stars.

There was another game we used to play a lot, I think it might have been Bad News Baseball or something like that.  It kind of had a little league theme but setup and gameplay were very similar to RBI except with jumping and diving players.
Title: Re:Best non-RBI baseball game
Post by: BeefMaster on 02/09/04, 03:38:04 PM
Bad News Baseball sounds right - I haven't played it much, but I do recall a Little League theme of some sort.  Speaking of which, Little League Baseball was pretty cool - it was made by the same company as Baseball Stars, so it played similarly, but it was Little League-themed.  You threw the bat in the air and caught the handle to determine home/away, anyone could pitch (some kids had "special talent" as pitchers, though), and good pitchers were often the best hitters on teams, just like in real life.  You could also play a Little League World Series, which was pretty cool.

Seems like we revist this topic every month.  I voted baseball stars.
The first baseball game I really got into was Super Challenge Baseball for the Atari 2600 (was exclusively 2 player) and homeruns were any hit off the screen.  The way the screen was setup if you hit the ball right down the line, as soon as it passed the 3rd basemen it was basically a homerun.  And I believe everything was 2 dimensions (no fly balls) you could hit a homerun on a ball that the 2nd basemen could have potentially fielded, those were the days...

Shit yes.  This is one on one baseball at its finest.  I still have an atari 2600...every now and again, I find the need to break it out and play this baseball game.

Speaking of the 2600...I have the cordless joysticks...nobody else that I know of ever seems to have even heard of these, let alone have them.  Do any of you have the cordless joysticks for the 2600?  This was a product truly before it's time.  They work great...why PS2/XBox/etc. still have cords is beyond me!

You're not going to believe this until I make a trek into my storage locker and dig it out for a picture, but not only do I have the cordless joysticks, I also have the original box. :)

Actually, the best wireless controller product I've ever used was the NES Satellite. It turned any controller into a wireless controller, and doubled as a 4-player adapter at the same time.

Wholeheartedly agree, in fact the Satellite is still in use at the Dee-Nee house.  Wireless with the standard NES controllers, nothing finer...

Only downsides are line-of-sight and the fact they it uses C batteries.  Seriously, who uses C batteries anymore?

The more I think about it, I believe I am going to begin a quest to find a copy of Bad News Baseball.  I found a couple ROM's but unfortunately I'm worthless with a computer and don't know how to play them.

Another thing we were talking about is that we're pretty sure that there was another baseball game we played back then that had almost identical music to the RBI theme and even the same runners on base music.  Possibly BNB?

Maybe you can help me with this one SalBando?

No, it's from baseball stars, it might be where you create a team when you name it something like that.  I have a fuzzy memory, it's probably been 8 years since I've done it.
