Title: RALPH WILEY and RBI baseball
Post by: fknmclane on 02/10/04, 01:02:39 AM
I posted Ralph Wiley's column last week about trash talk.  I emailed him the story from one of our members (I'm sorry I forget who it is) about the autographed Tony Pena baseball.  He actually wrote back.  You guys ain't gonna believe this shit.  Here's the email.

Great story to me, because I too was hooked on RBI. And my son owned me. I was always the NFL All-Stars and he was the A.L. and he relieved at the end with Sabes and it was lights out. Pena and the Cardinals. Man, was that team fast or what?
RW

Hooked on RBI?!!!!!!  I can't fucking believe it.

That's fucking awesome!  I bet there are more closet RBI fans out there than we could ever imagine.

I do know what he meant but NFL All Stars?  I bet his son owned him because LT and Jerry Rice had trouble catching up with the curveball.

A sportswriter.  He's worked for SI in the past, written a half-dozen books and is currently a columnist on Page 2 at espn.com.

Your post has me torn - on one hand, Wiley seems like a pretty cool guy.  On the other hand, I can't stand his writing - I tried reading a few of his columns on Page 2, and I eventually have taken to avoiding them altogether.  I read the trash-talking one, but it was a struggle.  I think most of it is cultural - his uses a lot of urban slang, and it's very heavy in that dialect, which I find annoying more than anything else.  It seems like he's trying to write in a spoken language, and it's hard to translate into standard American English.

"R-Dub" was Wiley's alter-ego in some of his columns.

So is it totally coincidental that our beloved rdub shares that name, or it is more likely that he was a lurker for a bit and I'm just know getting his inaugural "joke?"

R-Dub is actually Ralph Wiley.

Ralph Wiley faked his own death in order to allow himself more time to dee-nee.
