AKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. -- Ryne Sandberg apparently is serious about being a manager.

Sandberg was named Tuesday as the manager for the Cubs' Class A Peoria Chiefs. Sandberg follows his former Cubs teammate Jody Davis, who managed the Chiefs for one season and was assigned to the Class A Daytona team for 2007.

Sandberg was a late candidate for the Cubs' vacancy and interviewed with general manager Jim Hendry after the team decided not to renew Dusty Baker's contract. Hendry told the Hall of Fame second baseman that he was looking for someone with more managing experience, and the Cubs named Lou Piniella in October.

At that time, Sandberg said he had been considering getting back into baseball.

"It's something I've been thinking about quite a bit," he told the Chicago Sun-Times in October. "I'm at a stage in my life where that is something I want to do."

Sandberg has been a part-time coach for the Cubs during Spring Training, working with infielders on defense, as well as hitters.

"For me, the ideal situation is to manage the Cubs," Sandberg said. "That would obviously be the ultimate dream job for me."

He'll have to endure bus rides in the Midwest League first.

Davis led the Chiefs to a 75-64 record in his first season, and they were the first-half division champs with a 41-28 record. The Chiefs were swept by Beloit in the best-of-five playoff series.

Sandberg, 47, was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2005. He played for the Cubs from 1982-94, and again from 1996-97, and compiled a career batting average of .285 with 282 home runs and 1,061 RBIs. The smooth-fielding second baseman, who won the National League MVP award in 1984, won nine Gold Gloves, seven Silver Slugger Awards, and was a 10-time All-Star. He led the National League in home runs in 1990 with 40.

He did recognize that he needed more experience as a manager before taking on the top job with the Major League team.

"I just want to look at the different options that are there," Sandberg said in October. "I would want to start with the Cubs [organization]. I know I need to gain the experience on the field and put in the time that is required to be a Major League manager."
