Finally got an arcade system with MAME running. I have an old ROM for "vs baseball"-- close but it ain't the same as "Atari Vs. RBI."
I looked over the ROM page here on Dee-Nee but I had a few questions for anyone else who is familiar with MAME, ROMS and RBI ROMs specifically. Any help would be appreciated.
Q: The Dee-Nee rom page has many cool roms. I downloaded (and will later test) the orig. RBI game that is posted but some of the ROMs under the "User Created RBI ROMs" look interesting. Are these MAME compatible? Or can I use another emulator? Or am I shit out of luck?
Q: For anyone who also runs MAME, what places would you recommend to download ROMS?
Q: I have seen a few postings on craiglist for "all avil roms and chd's for mame". WTF is a "chd"? and what are "neo-geo games"?
Q: And just for fun, what games do you play/recommend I check out...
Thanks

The "user created" ROMs are in the NES format. This is similar to, but not the same as, the ROM format used by MAME. They are not compatible. It shouldn't be terribly difficult to covert them to MAME format though. Let me know if this is something you're interested in me pursuing.

Try PlanetEMU (http://www.planetemu.net/). If you want to just grab the whole thing, it's easy to find an up-to-date complete collection on various torrent sites (http://www.mininova.org/tor/564042). Note that most of these do not include CHDs. More on that later ...

"CHD"s are compressed hard drive images. For example, Killer Instinct used both ROMs on the motherboard (for game engine and sound mostly), and also used a small hard drive (storing movies and other graphics data). The MAME "ROM" is just what would be physically soldered to the motherboard. The CHD file is an image of the game's hard drive. Generally CHD games are useless without the CHD image.
Neo Geo was an arcade system that featured interchangeable cartridges, much like a console system. Arcade owners could buy new games for the cabinet for a fraction of the cost of a new upright. You've most likely seen one of these before; they were relatively popular due to their ease of game conversion, even though the games mostly sucked. Art of Fighting, Fatal Fury, and Bust-A-Move all got their start there. The Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neo_Geo_%28console%29) is a good source of information.

Given the sheer number of games available for MAME, this is more or less an impossible question. What kind of games do you like to play? Two of my favorites are Tempest and Mortal Kombat 2 ...
If you are playing RBI ROMs, why would you prefer to play on MAME? The game play features on the NES are all better.

Mostly b/c I am learning the differences. I am such a rookie at this. If it helps here's my history:
Grew up with Atari 2600 but have no love loss for those games. NES though, was magic-- I have like 50 games but I always come back to
RBI, Tecmo Super Bowl, and Pro Wrestling. I had a Playstation for a while, then got PS2, and I have a bunch of games but always come back to baseball games --mostly
High heat 2004 and
MLB 2k5 Ws edition--, and
Tekken 4, Virtua fighter, Madden and
Hot Shots golf. I got a PSP last year and haven't fallen in love with any game on that system.
Last month I bought an old arcade machine that had been converted for MAME. Its got three sets of interchangeable control panels one with 2 joy sticks 8-directional), one with avation joy stick & spinner (Think TEMPEST), and one with avaition joystick and track ball (Think TRON). I have a bunch of classic games that play thru MAME including vs. baseball but I logn for the NES version of RBI, or the atari vs. rbi arcade version so i sought out those ROMS.
I checked on this list b.c I really an intrigued by some of the user created ROMs and I wanted to understand if/how I coudl play them on my arcade. From what others have posted MAME won't play those. I wonder then, does that mean I simply need to to download another emulater program? Or is there more to it? From what another on this list has posted I may have to seek help in converting them to MAME format to play them on the arcade machine.
If you're looking for some more baseball action, you might want to try out the World Stadium and Super World Stadium series - it's the arcade version of Family Stadium, on which RBI is based. I've downloaded and tried out most of them, and the yearly changes are basically just graphic/sound/roster updates, up until '98, which put in a new engine and is pretty much unplayable, at least on my version of MAME. The pre-'98 ones all have the same control scheme as RBI.
Other MAME games I enjoy:
Classic Arcade: Mario Bros.; the "speed-up hack" version of Ms. Pac-Man (actually, I hate playing it on a gamepad, but had I joysticks, I would play it all the time); Flicky (a silly kiddie-looking game, but lots of fun); Wizard of Wor; APB; Star Wars; Rampage (and Rampage: World Tour)
Fighters: Mortal Kombat 2, 3, and Ultimate; Super Street Fighter II; the Street Fighter Alpha series; Primal Rage; Time Killers
Side-scrolling beat-em-ups (the "Double Dragon" genre): Cadillacs and Dinosaurs, Final Fight, both Dungeons & Dragons games; Ninja Baseball Batman (absolutely weird, but no worse than another 20 games in this genre, and it's worth trying for the weirdness); TMNT; Simpsons
Sports: NBA Hang Time (or Maximum Hang Time); Arch Rivals; Pigskin 620 AD (football version of Arch Rivals); Super High Impact football

I'm guessing it would be possible to play those ROMs on your arcade box, using an NES emulator instead of MAME. The machine functions as a regular computer, right? Assuming it runs Windows, go here (http://www.zophar.net/nes.html) and grab FCE Ultra (or, I suppose, one of the other emulators, but FCE Ultra has always worked well for me). It's pretty easy to use - all you have to do is unzip it and run the .exe to start it up, and the configuration in the Options menu should be pretty easy to figure out. I'm sure we can help you out if you run into any problems, too.
see if you can download a baseball arcade game called "clutch hitter" it had a couple special controllers but it was a good game from what i remember.
