Title: top three favorite teams and why
Post by: t on 03/14/02, 09:56:09 AM

1   st louis cardinals

i'm simply glutton for punishment. my lifetime record with this club is approximately 30-120 - and that may be generous. but i love their ability to run, and even though vince and ozzie usually can't hit a lick, i keep waiting for that moment when they beat out back to back infield hits - then run their ways home. that's why this team can be fun. and i love pena's arm - he probably throws out 60% of would-be's.

underappreciated: blank morris. i consider him the untried rookie. he's got pop, and hits well when you need it most.

2   san francisco giants

they can be a powerful team, and i like candy maldonado. bban and i were once tangled up in a giants/angels(?) 7 game series and candy finished with about 8 homers and 16 rbi (non-straight pitch).

harry spillman has hit is way into my starting lineup. he deserves all of the praise that he receives on this board.

underappreciated: krukow - the guy has insane action left and right.

3   new york mets

i admit, i love daryl - he's lefty, fast and exciting. i also like the doctor, and the dykstra/wilson back to back (the poor man's vince/ozzie).

i usually bench backman and santana (duh), and play heep and hojo. when this team is on, they're fun to watch. and the doctor can be oh so tough.

underappreciated: ray knight/danny heep - ray has hit more big home runs for me than anyone else, and danny is surprising with the bat.

no matter, though. bban has my number.

1.  the chowds cause i love their righthanded pop... i dont hit well with lefties.

then there is ahole clemens.. the nastiest pitcher in the game

2.  minnesota...  hrbek(mix in a vowel) and burnzky are a daunting combo.

pitching is strong with viola and bert.

3.  cali...  they have pop especially with their clutch pinch hitting corps.   their pitching is fucking awful but their offense usually picks up the slack.

Number one, with a bullet---The Tigers of Detriot

Is there a more professional team on the game?  I do not believe there is.  The team is led by its catylst, AT at the top of the lineup, followed up by a birage of power by three incredible lefties, then onto the best pure hitter in the game and three underrated yet never underproductive players.....the last of those being Our Sovereign lord of the Stache....off the bench we have a professional hitter and a group of platoon men willing to play their part...

the pitching, solid and true...and the best hitting pitchers in the game...all around...a class act

2) California Angels....these guys can just plain hit....mean and potatoes.....the D brothers and Sweet Rupert...the guy is unstoppable

3) St. Louis Cardinals--they are my favorite because when I play them, i know todd is on the other controller and i know that i can throw down the middle and i will be sucessful....they have little to no power...so i cant be beat on one swing usually.....i just feel for them....they put forth alot of effort, but are usually over matched

the only time i like to use st. louis is when i am playing a novice who doesnt know how to "throw" the ball.

1. No Doubt about it, Detroit is awesome, lots of love the top 4 hitters, then sub in sheridan or madlock, great hitting throughout the lineup, pitching is mediocre, but i like to hit.

2. I really don't like any other teams, but I kind of like houston, theres nothing better than scraping out a victory with them, they suck, but their pitching can keep them in the game.

3. Would have to say San Fran, they got some decent hitters, usually i can win with them.

1) California - I like everything about them,  quality straight-pitch hurlers (they could use a lefty tho), the best hitter in the game (potatoes), the best combo in the game (meat and potatoes), etc.  I have been using them for so long that they've just become my team...

2)  San Fran - Harry Spilman is my favorite player to hit with.  Nobody respects this guy and I just keep on crushing with him.  I love all their lefties (every aldrete, who I used to hate), though their 2-3-4 is very hit or miss.  Big daddy and Garrelts are a solid starter and stopper.  I enjoy playing with them, even though I lose two-thirds of the time..

3)  Minnesota - Once again, love their lefties and Randy Bush is a hoot to hit with.  Their righties blow though and I'm always in the game, but never really winning it.  I like Beringuer as the fireball reliever, he keeps the opponents guessing...

Even though I play quite a bit with Detroit, they don't make my list of "favorite" teams.  The problem with Detroit is that they are too good - they hit way too many crap-swing homers (Lockharts).  It's very frustrating to be out-swinging your opponent but they win simply because they are Detroit...

when it comes down to it... detroit's unsung corps of sweet lou, and brookins usually are the ones that bite me in the ass. the lefties at the top of the order are tough but get my best pitches... i tend to relax at the bottom of the order.

i will admit that detroit is stacked...but its not their overwhelming power that impresses me...they just never say die....especially in curve ball play....t can get them down, but they just find a way to win....alot more singles than id like...not tooo much speed at all....but they are a selfless team of professionals...all concentrated on winning...and tom brookens.....lord, what else can i say about him.....

they have more speed than you would think... the only road blocks are darrell evans and nokes.  otherwise, the team is pretty fleet... boston on the other hand, now there is a team with the speed of a glacier.

Houston is my favorite team to play with.  It is the challenge of being overmatched at all times.  There really is nothing better than Nolan popping a few Advils and going out there and completely shutting down an opponent.  Manufacture a few runs here and there by using their speed and guts, and you have a win.  Sweeping a series in some good NL baseball...this is truly the greatest moment.

dill, i have to agree with you in that the national league style of play is the way to go.  the dh should be eliminated for it was only brought into play to give the game some offense...   if nobody has noticed, i think the american league has plenty of offense... besides what is better than watching these overpayed swingers and their futile attempts to play defense.   i know the union will never go for it but there has to be some way that we can do away with the dh... after all, there is no dh in the world of RBI.

To come to the defense of the tigers, much like gwynn, the tigers do have some speed....the top two are A speeds....and alan trammell can turn a game around if necessary....hitting and running...i almost think that their pention for power gives them the "slugger" view around the league...which is reserved for tony armas....i dont think ive ever gotten anything but a homerun with him....but regardless...sweet lou provides b speed in the bottom half....but they can hit..

the houston astros are a team that i like using....and probably are the most satisfying victory on the game...the scoring is low....the hits are feeble...but you do need to utilize every tool in your bag to make things happen...ryan is a work horse and scott has great action....

just a few updates from the weekend....

t beat my california angels by taking my advice and moving to minnesota....brnksy had a huuuuuuuge series and put the offense on his back....all the role players came up big when they needed to and suprisingly, sweet music frankie viola pitched lights out....

i dont know if this play was in the drinking game, but on a hit to right against the computer, i tossed out the runner at first...also, t did the ever impressive "strike em out and throw them out at first" play on me...the first ive seen of that....there was also a triple play made on t... a new series has begun....the tigers (bban) got up two games to none on the twins (t)...but in game three, the usually reliable doyle alexander got drained in the 3rd inning....the 3rd friggin inning, and was soft tossing BP to the twins for the next 3 frames...i got down by 5 and couldnt recover and T inched closer and made it a new series...

i gave everyone on the california angels their outright release yesterday due to a lackluster (at best) performance against the twins....meat and potatoes were playing more like sherry and lambchop.....rupert jones was irrelevant, going 0-for the series....the pitching was deplorable....and i was quite frankly put off...it may be a while until they get a chance to come back on the field.....that is all for now....

t is probably not used to scoring a run with one swing of the bat but the twins are quite capable of doing that...  they are well-rounded with good pitching and some solid sticks....  t, make sure you get randy bush into the game... either for gladden or gagne, but get him in-  you wont regret it.

bush saw a lot of playing time, and did ok. i was really hoping he would have had more of an impact. i'd say davidson was the real stud off the bench, and larkin had a big homerun. my twins ended up losing to the mighty tigers, regardless of a monster series by tom brunansky.

i am now at the helm of the decided worst team in the game (see: houston's up 2-1). it is the lure of the weak hitting teams that gets me.

give him a little more time to show what he can do.  as for houston,  make sure you get all the subs in  especially puhl and garner..   i like puhl to lead off and garner in the 3 spot.   then use lopes in the 8th spot and dickie thon as a late inning pinch hitter...it is his role and he has accepted it.

I don't know Joe, I like to leave Hatcher in, he's an A speeder, Wallings a lefty, Puhl definately comes in for Ashby, and Garner pinch hits late when I need a big hit.

hatcher has his moments i will give him that much... for the most part the guy is a typical speedster at the top of the order who continually fails to do their job... hit the fucking ball on the ground.   thus, he sits on the bench and terry puhl plays....  lefties dont get preference from me so that doesnt hold for denny boy... he sucks too and i am about ready to put gina davis on the bench too.
