Title: Whose the best player in R.B.I.?
Post by: GPines on 02/05/02, 05:04:39 PM

I want to hear who everybody thinks is the best player in R.B.I.  I have got to say Kirk Gibson is the best player. Left handed, plenty of power, speed, always gets hits. He's got a strong throwing arm, gets good jumps on balls in the outfield, and he's a good guy in the clubhouse. He might not have the HR consistency in straight pitch , but in curved style he gets it done.

What do you guys think?

Reggie Jackson - no Diggity, no doubt...

And Gibby can certainly hit the dingers in straight pitch.  In fact, he is the only player ever to hit 6 dingers in a game.  Though I'm pretty sure I did it one time with Dick Schofield but wasn't keeping track...

Gibby can play, no doubt, but he's no Reggie Jackson...

Wow 6 homers in a game thats incredible, I'm glad my man Gibson was the guy to do it, Reggie is good, but I don't use California as much as my boys from Detroit, I gotta go with Gibby.

Barring the drug addiction, I would say that D-Straw could be the best.  He is a true 5 tool player on the game.  The argument for Gibby was so good that I might have to change my vote.  The fact that he is better in the clubhouse and plays outfield harder gives him the nod.  Reggie can hit, no doubt, but he is too slow...but how much speed do you need to trot around the bases 3 times a game?  This is an intriguing question that deserves more thought and more arguments.

D-Straw has got some game no doubt about it, but he is stuck on that team that just sucks! If he was in the black and white Detroit uniform, maybe. I have a hard time liking anyone from NY, everytime I draw them I just shake my head in disgust.

As far as pure intimidation goes, I would have to go with Reggie.  If it's a close game and the Angels have 2 on and he's up, your hands can start shaking.   Darrell Evans might be the best player when in a groove.  It seems like when he's seeing it real well he's guaranteed 4 hits in a curve style game.   To me it's a toss-up between the two, today I say Reggie, tommorrow maybe Evans.

Spike Owen is by far the best player in RBI.  His power and speed are unmatched. If I could, I'd even bring him in to pitch!!!!
Title: Re: Whose the best player in R.B.I.?

Anyway, the best player in my book is actually Reggie Jackson.  There really isn't much debate.  He's the most intimidating player in the lineup and can get you back in the game in a hurry.  I would put Tony Armas high on the list, but he's got absolutely no speed and sometimes is prone to slumps.  Don Baylor has been just insane lately, so he's also very high on my list.

Not the best player, but last night Sullivan pinch hit and ended the game 2 for 2 with 2 out of the stadium bombs. Hidden pop off the bench!

For a solid year, Sullivan was pretty much the best one-AB pinch hitter in RBI.  That was a long time ago (junior year of college), and now he's just plain terrible.  I'm not sure where he lost it for us, but it's good to see someone still has the Sullivan Swing...

Sullivan has been known to go deep fly everyonce in a while. He may be deserving of a legend status if he keeps swinging the bat like that!

Title: Re: Whose the best player in R.B.I.?
Post by: Dill on 02/09/02, 04:35:33 PM
I never knew Sullivan had so much Pop in the bat.  I have always let the pitcher hit in late innings instead of him.  I gave him some chances but he never did anything.  I will have to put him in the lineup from the beginning just to test this theory.

First off, Sulilvan will have an RBI legend page simply for the fact that the other three pinch hitters on Boston are well-known.  Perhaps I'll do that later today...

I went unorthodox over the weekend and played a few games with Boston.  Of course I didn't win anything, but I tried subbing Sullivan in for Spike Owen and it did not go very well.  One thing I do know is that Billy Buckner is solid...

Hey there guy, I remember your  site!  Correct me if I'm wrong, but weren't you a heavy poster on the original RBI message board?  Very good to have you here...

Also good to see Reggie pulling over 50 percent...

Hey guy nice poll, but I was upset to see that Girk Gibson wasn't even recognized as one of the great lefties. He's number one in my book. I mean Wade Boggs?
Title: Re: Whose the best player in R.B.I.?
Post by: Dill on 02/11/02, 07:03:55 PM
I agree.  Wade Boggs, that ckicken-eating wife-beater, sucks even compared to right handed hitters.  Darrell Evans should have been in that poll along with Kirk Gibson.

TIM Raines... bar none... cause you cant get him out...  lethal combination of speed and power.  don't forget about him just cause he is an allstar.

most over rated... kirby suckett.  he doesn't do anything
second most over rated...  don baylor  (he's in a ten-year slump)
Title: Re: Whose the best player in R.B.I.?

Tim Raines is very solid, but my money for best All-Star is Dawson.  That guy has the fastest home runs out there....

i say
definately Raines
he is faster than Jackson
has as much power as either Jackson or Gibson
plus he is leadoff, which means he almost always gets a hit
come on, Kirk Gibson,
if he's so good why isn't he on an all star team??

Lutz

Gibby's not on the all-star team because he's on Detroit, Clemens is the same way, maybe  he wasn't good enough for the all-star team either. I'm pretty sure the Am, and Na teams were made after the other 8 teams were made.

Title: Re: Whose the best player in R.B.I.?
Post by: Gantry on 02/18/02, 11:22:04 AM
Like Greg said, the All-Star team consists entirely of players who aren't on any of the 8 teams.  Regardless, All-Star status is one of those "real world" things that doesn't directly apply to the fantasy world of RBI.  Guys like Ruppert Jones, Ellis Burks and Pat Sheridan, who don't even start on their RBI teams, outproduce many of the All-Stars...

TIm Raines is definitely a stud, one of the top players in the game.  I just don't think he is better than Jackson and he certainly doesn't have as much power as Reggie, at least in straight-pitch.  And in straight pitch, the homer is king...

spike owen huh... talk about a waste.. i would hit with the pitcher before i woud hit with owen.  if i had to pick a non allstar it would be jim rice... he just hits and hits and hits.

i'd pay to see a fight between Spike Owen and Rafael Santana.  Maybe throw in Denny Walling as the special guest referee.

Post by: Lips on 02/20/02, 01:34:53 PM
With a name like Spike, how can he lose in a fight?

As a batter in RBI, though, I have finally come to the realization that he sucks ass, as I'll never keep him in a game again unless I'm playing Gantry and it's Spike's first at-bat with a man on first.  That's the only chance I'll give him...

It's all Hendu in the 8-Spot!!
Title: Re: Whose the best player in R.B.I.?
Post by: Gantry on 02/20/02, 01:51:21 PM
And for background, Lips has been keeping Spike in for the last few weeks.  He did get his day in the sun, and he proved to be worthless.  Perhaps it's time to do the same with Bobby Grich....
Title: Re: Whose the best player in R.B.I.?
Post by: mookiewilson on 02/20/02, 06:08:29 PM
I don't see how you can leave Spike in the game, especially with how awesome the Boston bench is.  I like to put burks in the 8 hole, Henderson leading off and Tony Armas hitting number 2.
Title: Re: Whose the best player in R.B.I.?

i agree with mookie... get buckner's slow ass out of there cause he flat out sags!
Title: Re: Whose the best player in R.B.I.?
Post by: mookiewilson on 02/21/02, 08:29:59 AM
Yeah, buckner definitely sucks. i would only leave him in if the ball could somehow go through his legs on every play to first. Then i would laugh hysterically and yell at Joe and give him bad memories of 86 over and over again.
Title: Re: Whose the best player in R.B.I.?
Post by: Gwynn3k on 02/21/02, 03:21:32 PM
its a shame that when they make errors that they dont get past the player.  instead... they just bounce off them sending sweat flying everywhere.    and what's the deal with runners rolling off the field when they get out... and are they crying?
Title: Re: Whose the best player in R.B.I.?
Post by: mookiewilson on 02/21/02, 07:50:00 PM
In the immortal words of Tom Hanks, THERE'S NO CRYING IN RBI BASEBALL!!!! ok, so maybe he didn't have the rbi in there. but i'm pretty sure he said it, and they just edited it out in final production.
Title: Re: Whose the best player in R.B.I.?
Post by: Dill on 02/22/02, 01:08:19 AM
Because I haven't known of Sullivan's late inning pop in the bat, I have been leaving Hendu on the bench for some 8th or 9th inning heroics.  Burks is the prototypical leadoff man, and there is nothing better than Armas smashing 3 homers in curve pitch from the 8 hole.
Title: Re: Whose the best player in R.B.I.?
Post by: Gwynn3k on 02/22/02, 03:30:34 PM
the problem with putting armas in the 8 hole is he wont see any pitches...
Title: Re: Whose the best player in R.B.I.?
Post by: GPines on 02/22/02, 05:14:53 PM
Gwynn makes a good point, Armas in the leadoff positon might be odd cause he is the slowest sonbitch in the game, but in the 8th spot we'll walk him and pitch to the pitcher. So leadoff might be best.
Title: Re: Whose the best player in R.B.I.?
Post by: Gwynn3k on 02/24/02, 02:18:45 PM
there are times when i would rather put him in for boggs for there are times when that beer-guzzling, chicken-eating, margo adams loving, horse riding freak is just not on his game.  of course that means either buckner or barrett has to play... but marty has had his share of good luck lately.
Title: Re: Whose the best player in R.B.I.?
Post by: GPines on 02/24/02, 05:43:23 PM
Hey buckner and boggs play for me, we need lefties in the lineup, Boggs is good for at least 1 wall scraper a game.

Even though Boggs did look pretty ridiculous riding on that horse after they won the series.
Title: Re: Whose the best player in R.B.I.?
Post by: Burnzky on 02/24/02, 08:55:53 PM

I leave boggs in.  He always seems to go 4/4 with a homer when i play with him.  I dont like buckner too much though.  He never plays good, but i like to leave him because its always funny to hear someone complain if he hits a homerun.
Title: Re: Whose the best player in R.B.I.?
Post by: Gantry on 02/25/02, 04:36:37 AM
We all keep Boggs in, and Bill Buckner has recently been on a huge streak.  A few months ago, nobody was keeping him in, but we've given him a few chances and he seems to perform.  He's probably just on a hot streak, but for now Buckner stays in....

I do Burks at leadoff, seem to hit more dingers with him than Armas....
Title: Re: Whose the best player in R.B.I.?
Post by: mookiewilson on 02/25/02, 07:55:47 AM
i like to go with armas in for buckner, burks in for spike owen, and occasionally hendu in for barrett.  Sometimes i like to keep hendu in for another bat late in the game, but lately i've been building confidence in sullivan to take care of the late inning pinch hit duties.
Title: Re: Whose the best player in R.B.I.?
Post by: Gwynn3k on 02/25/02, 11:00:40 AM
boston is my team yet even though i am a lefty, i have better luck with the righties.  thus, i see armas-rice back to back as a lethal combo.  i know it leaves the bottom of the order in shambles but barrett, hendu, armas, rice and the slumping baylor make for a tough row to hoe.  of course spike owen is taken out for tim, i mean ellis, burks.
Title: Re: Whose the best player in R.B.I.?
Post by: Gantry on 02/27/02, 04:27:53 AM
I can't belive that people actually leave Marty Barrett in.  Not an insult, but nobody even thinks about it, Barrett goes out.  I think it's time to give Marty a few game to see what he does...

And this should probably go on "RBI Nemesis", but Wade Boggs beats me harder than his ex-wife.  That guy hits way too many homers off me, especially when Potsie is playing....
Title: Re: Whose the best player in R.B.I.?
Post by: Gwynn3k on 02/27/02, 08:07:40 AM
i have been bitten by chicken boy myself but the guy never does poo for me.  too many good reasons to take his ass out and throw armas in.  i would rather have barrett play than billy buck for the reason i am more efficient with the righties. that way... i have all nine batters from the right side. so as long as saberhagen isnt in the bullpen i will be successful
Title: Re: Whose the best player in R.B.I.?

I think Boggs should get on his Horse and go live in the mountains and not bother anyone.

....That one's for Burnzky
Title: Re: Whose the best player in R.B.I.?

i agree...  if i never see boggs' grill again it would suit me just fine
Title: Re: Whose the best player in R.B.I.?
Post by: Burnzky on 02/27/02, 08:17:35 PM

I dont see the big problem  with boggs.  It seems that whenever i use him he does fine and usually gets lots of hits and he hits a lot more homers than you would think.
Title: Re: Whose the best player in R.B.I.?
Post by: Dill on 02/28/02, 04:46:13 PM
If Boggs wasn't the 3rd batter, I would cut him more slack.  But he is in a position where he needs to hit with power, and hit the gaps to give Rice RBI opportunities.  Wade and his stupid wrist flippy swing just aren't cutting it for a 3rd batter.

I'd have to say that Andre Dawson on NL is the best All-Star.  But from the regular teams, I've always crushed the ball with Alan Trammell.  Plus he's got inside the park HR speed which really has a value when you hit a good gapper.
Title: Re: Whose the best player in R.B.I.?
Post by: Gwynn3k on 03/02/02, 03:11:58 PM
inside the park speed huh,  against who the computer.  your opponent would have to be shit-faced to give up an inside the park homer.
Title: Re: Whose the best player in R.B.I.?
Post by: Dill on 03/06/02, 10:52:20 PM
An inside the park HR is unheard of.  Even triples are extremely rare in our games.  Barring any errors, I don't think an inside the park HR, a real one, is hardly possible.
Title: Re: Whose the best player in R.B.I.?
Post by: Gwynn3k on 03/07/02, 11:15:31 AM
without errors it is impossible.  you know when your outfielder picks up a ball in the corner and tries to throw it in but is too close to the wall and the ball ends up in the stands.  usually happens to rbi rookies but it is none the less hilarious.
Title: Re: Whose the best player in R.B.I.?
Post by: Dill on 03/07/02, 09:51:20 PM
That hasn't happened in a while to us, but it did much earlier.  And I might add that it is not exactly hilarious when you are winning a close game and it happens to you late in a heated RBI battle.

it is if your player is running around the bases...  especially if there a few of them...
