Title: RBI wiki vandalism
Post by: TempoGL on 07/13/07, 03:06:25 PM
some robot is editing RBI wiki pages into spam pages.  so far i fixed the forum members page and Bdawk's page, but if there is some way to ban these robots from signing up to vandalize, it should be done post-haste.

The board is fucked, its gonna take hours to repair.  i may jus leave the rbi wiki locked until i can install a version with better spam protection...

Wow, just about every single page on there has been spammed.  I don't even know where to begin, I don't have an old enough backup that's spam free.  I am not happy...

People that do that kind of shit should be taken out and shot with a cannon full of rusty fish hooks.

It's all computers nowadays, no humans involved...

I just tried to update to version 1.6 and failed miserably.  Unfortunately, some of the MediaWiki documentation lied and said you could install 1.6 with MySQL 3.x - thanks for wasting 45 minutes of my life fuckers...

The next question is if copying back the wiki backup from last night will work.  If it doesn't, I'll save it for another day...

I think I'm ready for that Dee-Nee server upgrade...

I'm taking Aug 5-11 off if you want a hand.

In the meantime, admin me and I'll see what I can do. I tried doing it directly in the db but it looked scary.

I agree. If I ever met someone who wrote Spam software for a living, the moment he confided this in me, I'd reach over and punch him in the mouth.

I think Spam, data fishing, trojan horse viruses and the like, are the same as walking into my apartment and fucking with/stealing my shit.

Not worth mucking with - the database schema upgrade uses 4.x specific features, that "new" mediawiki version is already unsupported, I can't remember the passwords, and we desperately need a whole shebang upgrade anyways...

As a matter of fact, I'm pulling the trigger on the following cheapo upgrade parts right now:

$28 64-bit AMD CPU with a fan (http://www.newegg.com/product/Product.asp?item=N82E16819104305)

Cheap Linux friendly mobo (http://www.newegg.com/product/Product.asp?item=N82E16819104305)

$70 for the combo - the rest of the stuff we have in extra inventory at work.  RAM, 80gb sata drives (mirrored), case, etc.  The visions of dual-core & Xen are gone, for what we do we wouldn't get enough love out of it...

We'll shoot for that 5th-11th timeframe to start migrating it.  The other server ain't going anywhere, so if we can get the wikis and forums moved over by then, it'll be a success.

I'm officially excited, POOYAN!  Sometimes you have to take spam and make spamade out of it...

Under our company policies, yearly vacation is forfeited if not taken by fiscal year end. The primary reason for this vacation is that I don't want to donate it back to the company.

Originally my plans were to lay around the house, dick around on the computer, dick around on the Wii, dick around on the DS. I've got the Pumpkins concert and Dee-Nee fest planned anyway.

The CPU & Mobo are ordered, this is exciting!  I can't quite remember when but this machine has been around since at least 2000...

This guy is an idiot, should have shelled out another $20 to get a mobo with more than two SATA ports...
