I have probably only played my nes cart vs humans for a total of about 5-10 games so far in the year+ that i have owned it. And ive really never studied the player abilties much.
since the RBI discussion here has been null and void in recent months we need to stir up some debates here. i made up sheets with all the attributes a long time ago but for the life of me i cant remember where i tracked that information down from. some help please and link us up!
a rough ranking in some -1 SP/ATG style best of 3 series play-.
This was pretty hard to make on account of some really average to down right terrible starting pitching out there.
1. Atlanta
6 guys with over 900 power. unheard of. mainly a right handed line-up, but just too powerful to debate. Like regular Boston on roids.
While warren Spahn blows goats, Niekro is basically a right handed fernando as a starter. Pretty damn good bullpen though, so winning game 2 vs the 2nd starter should be a cinch.
2. Oakland
I gotta admit this looks skeptical for arcade ratings since they dont have HUGE power numbers thru the line-up, but Oakland has SOLID pitching 1-4. Thier bats leave a little to be desired but you've got 2 speed demons at the top and a small murders row of 3 straight 900+ guys. This team would rank near the top in regular RBI for sure. 2 strong starters gives you a good chance vs anyone in the 3 game series.
3. New York
I hate to put em 3rd, but they have so much power in the line-up that you can probably over come thier pitching woes. You will need ford and righetti in games 1 and 3 to come up big though. Not a lot of pitching stamina at all anywhere from this team.
4. Cincinatti
Great speed off the top and line up very similar to Oaklands. Bucky walters rediculous 56 stamina and 10-14 curve attributes can make him a monster for 6-7 innings. The other starter Mario Soto blows. Gullet is pretty decent reliever to follow up from walters. 2 more speedsters on the bench for some pinch hit action.
This starts to get very tough to decide from here out.....
5. Chicago
The cubbies have a prettty lack luster pitching staff. Sutcliffe is about the same as his NL self, but Jekins who has a 10-6 rating(which is pretty decent) only has a stamina of 28(which may be a typo error?) as the other starters. The relievers blow. However where Chicago shines is in the power department. Enough big bats to run with the likes of NY/Oak.
6. SF
probably a fair ranking here. SF has some bona-fide power in the line-up. pitching wise you got Juan Marichal for games 1 & 3 as the starter and thats about it. seriously...thats all you got. Bobby Bonds and Mays offer good power and great speed, so they are somewhat dynamic in the middle.
7. St louis
The cards have the 7th spot locked up in my book. a decidedly better staff than brooklyn, and really not that much less power than boston. 1-4 on the staff all look solid on paper, so its very possible to win many game 2's with this team. brock and ozzie offer blazing lefty speed, and vince/mcgee offer more lefty speed from the bench. id say this team is easily an upgrade from its regular version.
8. Brooklyn
The Dodgers have a line-up of decent power from 4-8 and blazing speed off the bench. Think regular version of SF but with more speed. The one thing thats fairly impressive with the dodgers is that thier staff has great stamina from the relievers along with prety good curve ability. fernando clocks in with a 24 stamina and has crazy curve. koufax and drysdale are pretty average for the starters. Nothing flashy at all about this team, but they look real scrappy on paper.
9. Boston
man does this team stink. 2 guys with over 900 power which is alright, and a lot of sub 850 power. so far thats not competely terrible. Add that to the fact they only have one speedster who's weak as hell and a real shitty pitching staff...easily the worst on the game and there is little hope for these guys.
10. Houston
its really hard for me to put houston here at number 10 but alas they are. Geena has a 900 ratings and thon is next best at 810. other than that..you guessed it...a bunch of 700+something power. Ryan and Scott have been snubbed a bit from thier other counter parts in terms of stamina and curve as well. Joe niekro however brings an astonishing 35 stamina into the fold as a reliever with crazy curve. he alone is probably the saving grace of this team. joe will keep in em in some dog fights single-handedly.
Atlanta vs the top 5 series......
Atlanta vs Oakland.
Head to head i believe Oakland could concieveably take em in best of 3 about 50% of the time. oakland has 2 viable #1 starters on thier team. oakland would have an advantage of sorts in game 2 vs warren spahn but atlantas bullpen is pretty solid.
Atlanta vs NY.
Game 2 would be owned by atlanta in this series 7 out of 10 times. that fact alone probably propels ATL to the majority of series wins.
Atlanta vs Cincinatti.
Bucky walters(Cin) needs to win game 1 or else the series is over. Soto and company gets shelled in game 2.
Atlanta vs Chicago.
considering the bullpen of chicago, Atlanta stands a good chance to sweep here.
Oakland vs the top 5 series...
Oakland vs NY.
This would be a pretty good match up as well. once again game 2 should be dominated by oakland. both teams do have some stamina problems so the big bats are bound to decide some of these contests.
Oakland vs Cincinatti.
More of the same as Cincy has no viable game 2 starter and a suspect pen. very similar power numbers between the 2 teams. overall probably a great match-up.
Oakland vs Chicago.
The Cubs bats would make this a series along with some decent starting pitching. In the end Cincy's staff should trump them.
You have horribly underrated the Giants, for some of the other teams whether or not you play 1 or 2 starters can make a huge ratings difference (Oakland, Cincy).
Oakland is a very mediocre team if you play 1 starter and Cincy loses it's huge advantage if you play 2 starters
I think the best-of-three play makes a huge difference as well. Bucky Walters alone probably makes Cincy a top3 team if only one starter and a one-game series...

whys that? from what i can see they have complete crap for pitching besides juan. explain the other discrepencies you have.
I think Perry is also decent, and there lineup is very good after subs
one cannot debate that the SF line-up has some good power, but i just cant move off my perch and bump em up much more with that pitching. i plan to re-evaluate my rankings again soon. with my previous 1sp/3game series stipulation i still see enough teams that have an ace that can match marichal, and most teams have a guy who on paper is far superior to gaylord paerry in terms of curve.
SF does has a fairly consistent line-up. no huge bombers( 4 guys between 900-921 power) but a nice consistency throughout. IIRC thier average power number after subs are added is 862. ATL is the best with a rediculous 906.
for the hell of it, im doing a watch tourney with my rankings.
ATL gets a bye
SF vs STL....winner to face ATL
Cin vs Bos
bottom half
Oakland gets a bye
Chi vs brooklyn...winner to face Oakland
Ny vs Hou
im doing appropriate subs as well, so each team has full offensive strength as well in watch mode.
1st round best of 3.
HOU @ NY. NY wins 2-0.
game 1. NY rolls 11-1 in 3 innings. 9 run 1st inning. 14 hits/5 homers.
game 2. Ny wins 18-8 in 8 innings. HOU had a 5-2 lead going into the bottom 4th but got hammered from there out.
Bos@ Cin. Cin wins 2-0.
game 1. Cin's bats go crazy in a 31 hit/21 run performance and win 21-12. both teams used both starters.
Game 2. Cin wins on a Lombardi 2 run walk off in the bottom of the 9th to win 14-13. Cin lead 7-4 thru 6, then the runs came like crazy. Fred Lynn hit a 2 run homer in the top half to take a 13-12 lead for bos.
