Hey all,
I don't know if anyone will know what I'm talking about, but I figure this would be the place to find someone who does.
Are there any baseball games for "modern" consoles (post-NES, SNES, and Genesis) whose "feel" comes close to that of RBI? I guess "feel" is hard to define, but I'll try. I realize there's no match for RBI's quirkiness and charm, but I think lots of it comes from the fact that the game isn't bogged down by unwieldy batting cursors, impossible base-running controls, or unrealistic baseball physics (example: the complete absence of foul balls in a game like Triple Play 99). I'm looking for a game that combines that wonderful simplicity (just pitch, hit, and play defense -- nothing like a Trammel-to-Whitaker-to-Evans double play) with the ability to do things like play a full season, trade players, and have playoffs.
The ROMs on dee-nee and other sites out there are amazing and innovative, but they obviously can't hold all 30 teams or give you a season mode. So, at the risk of blasphemy, can anyone recommend a post-NES console game (from Playstation 1 forward) that might give me what I'm looking for? I look forward to hearing from you.
the one on wii was said to be real good. power pros?
power pros is on PS2 also. it has an RBI feel, but the season mode is insanely complicated and a pain to navigate.
MVP 05 is a fantastic and easy to play game.
Power Pros has the RBI feel, but like Stassy said, the interface can be trying at times.

I'd agree that it's "fantastic" (I've been meaning to pirate a copy for my PC for awhile now; it's out of print), but I don't find it that easy - I've played it a few times with my brother on the XBox, and he routinely thrashes me. It's not too hard to figure out the basics, but there's a lot to it if you want to become very good at it - stuff like being able to read the type of pitch that's coming, and trying to keep all the buttons straight, because the game uses them all.
i love mvp 05 and would love to challenge bonny or ryno.
i'd whomp you.

I'm pretty sure Bonny and Ryno have played each other online before - they did some series with custom teams a couple years ago. I'm not sure whether they were playing on PC or PS2, though.
I think it was PS2, they'd set the teams and mail memory cards to each other.
The only few times I played online via PS2 was weird because it wasn't too smooth, and that really messed with the ability to read pitches.
Thanks guys. PowerPros is pretty much exactly what I had in mind. Good job.
My laptop does a terrible job of playing MVP 05, so I've scrapped it.
I still have the ps2 version, but EA took the online capabilities away.
my lappy is fine with mvp 05, but i can't imagine playing online without enough lag to piss me the fuck off.
EDIT:
wow. what a shitty post for 5,000.
it would be like a bloop single that just got over the shortstop.

I have both a wii and a Ps2. which platform do you guys recommend I get powerplay for?
wii. it's fun with the wiimote and nunchuk and takes less effort than you would think.

You have to register and have a PS2 file transfer device(Maxdrive, xport etc) Great rosters with all teams updated as close as possible(minors included)
