Title: Houston Wins by Slaughter
Post by: Lips on 02/02/02, 08:05:42 AM
Ahhh, a very great moment just occured for me, as a very sad moment just occured for our friend, killspilman.

I just played with Houston and slaughtered Boston, 13-3 through eight innings.  Boston got their three runs off of nine hits and three homers.  I, on the other hand, had seven homers with Houston, while subbing no one through the entire game.  Oh yeah, one more thing...

DENNY WALLLING IS A GOD!!!!  A granny in the 6-run second inning.

Nolan was pretty solid too, as he was pitching 98mph heaters in the seventh...

One last thing...
killspilman sucks!!!!

Make it two-in-a-row!!!!  First Cruz hits a granny in the eighth, then Dickie Thon does one of his own, on a pitcher substitute, in the ninth...  In the last two innings, Houston outscored Boston, 9-0, and won, 16-10.

Once again...killspilman sucks and sucks bad!!!!

REDEMPTION!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Three innings, 10-0 Jae.....  record 2-1 for the series...

I'll be back.   FEED ME!!!!!

Houston finished out the shortened series (meant to be seven games) with another victory -- this time by the score of 8-7.

killspilman still sucks...

Beware of the HO Train!!!!  Will they make a tourney appearance this year?  Hmmm, quite possibly against Potsie.  He sucks too...  Dee-Nee!!

Never underestimate the supreme power of the great Denny Walling!!

A short message about the Houston Astros.  If playing curve pitch, Houston can easily take a 3 game series by pitching Nolan in the first and third games.  As aforementioned, Mr. Ryan can be throwing in the upper nineties in the seventh, and then you bring in Kerfeld in the ninth if Nolan gets into trouble.  Houston wins the series 2-1.  Seen it a hundred times......

One should never use great and Denny Walling in the same sentence...

Nolan Ryan must really be the shit in curves, never would I have thought Houston could be competitive in any form of RBI.  A whole world of RBI skill has been opened thanks to this forum...

I was being sarcastic about the Denny Walling part. In all honesty, he's just a step above Rafeal Santana and Spike Owen.  And i agree about the non-strait pitch factor with Houston.  Nolan Ryan is probably the best pitcher in the game (although he's not nearly as cool as the dead guy).

Houston has been playing great lately, slaughters upsets whats next.

... If you ask me Denny Walling is worthless in curve style. I'm usually tempted to take him out and put Puhl in the 3 hole.

I can vouch that Denny Walling is completely worthless is straight-pitch as well, easily the worst three hitter in RBI.  And like I said in my Houston writeup, that's doubly sad considering how terrible Tommy Herr is...

Even with all my whining, I usually don't take Denny out.  I definitely put Puhl in at #1 and Garner #8.  Not a big fan of Reynolds either, so he usually exits.  And I never use all four subs initially...

I do agree at how bad Tommy Herr is, but I usually leave him in just because of the fact that he had wore no ear flaps on his batting helmet.  I used to sub Lindeman for him, but Jim just hasn't been cutting it lately.  It would be hard for me to pick Walling as the worst hitter in all of RBI.

I think Walling is the worst #3 hitter, not in all of RBI.  Though he may be the worst hitter in RBI that I consistently keep in.  Of course, who's fault is that?

Santana is my worst player in RBI, with Owen, Grich, Herndon and Davidson close behind...

I can see Owen as the worst RBI hitter.  Pitiful.  I have never had a problem with Bobby Grich, though.  I have found him to hit many gappers into left.  He may just be a curve ball hitter, because he has had many multiple homer games in our style.  He is actually a force in the 6 hole.  Is it possible that players could have a major turnaround like this one, just because of the pitching style?

It could be that players are better or worse depending on the pitching style, though I don't have enough experience with curves to say for sure.  The absolute most important factor in straight pitch is homers, plain and simple...

I do know a few curvers that don't like Grich, so it could also be a factor of your pitching style and your playing style/opponents.  Most of us here play the same select group of people, which probably leads to a stagnant style.  I'm sure all of our perspectives of players and teams would be much different if we played RBI'ers from across the country...

It's been a good discussion tonight, but I'm off to sleep.  Good start to the forums Dill, be sure to head on back...

"I can see Owen as the worst RBI hitter.  Pitiful."

Everyone around here knows of the amazing Spike Owen and the power behind his bat.  Why?  Because I won't shut up about it...  One great day, not so long ago...  Spike Owen and Roger Clemens did the unthinkable: they both batted twice in an inning, gathering an amazing four hits between the two of dem.  To Gantry's disgust, he couldn't finish the game after the second Clemens' hit; he dropped the controller and retired to the basement.

So think what you must, but every dog has its day...

I don't know.  Bobby "How the Grich Stole Christmas" is a big sentimental favorite of ours and we usually keep him in the lineup.  He doesn't hit many homers but he's solid for a couple of hits a game.  The only reason i would take him out is cause I think California has a really good bench.

I saw someone said they take out Reynalds Wrap, I would give him a try, he has some pop, he has hit many homers for me in curve style game, his power is disguised behind the great numbers, but think of Pat Sheridan, well not that good but worth playing with, plus he's a lefty.

I also agree with GP.  Reynolds has pretty good pop, even for straight pitch.  Averaged nearly two homers a game with him this past weekend on my Houston experiment...

Yes, Reynolds is a player, but he can only hit well against righties.  It has been our finding that he gets an extra 2 hits per ballgame if he is pitted against right handed pitchers for the duration of a game.  He can really turn on the inside cut fastball.

Have to agree with Dill on Reynolds.  That just gets it done against righties.  He bears down and gets the nice single between 1st and 2nd.  It seems like he does it at opportune times as well.  Now if Tudor or the hideous looking Frank Viola is on the mound, you better take him out.  Has anyone noticed that Frankie V looks like he has really bad breath?

You guys are probably right about Reynolds, I didn't really give him much of a chance.  Lipitz's performance with him over the weekend will keep him on my lineup.  More importantly, that opens up the doors for the Denny Walling or Geena Davis sub...

And I think most low-stat, big-HR lefties have trouble with the lefty pitchers.  Spilman and Wilfong are all but worthless against any lefty.  Perhaps it's one of those rare areas in RBI where stats actually matter...

Hey, don't mess with Frankie V.  Frank Viola is the only sports star to graduate from my high school on Long Island. In fact, he graduated with my Mom and Dad and was on my dad's basketball team.  I saw him in like December and he's ballooned up to about 250 pounds.  I guess he must now just sit around his house, drink beer, and play RBI all day.

Ah, the life of an ex-RBI player.  That would be great to sit and drink beer and play RBI all day.  I know I would.  Wait, I do that anyway.

Wow, that is impressive, going to the same HS as an RBIer.     Our high school's biggest claim to fame was Ronald Goldman, that guy OJ killed along with his wife...

As nice as that is, it doesn't top Potsie's grandma going to high school was Stan Musial...

I would like to add that my grandfather grew up in the same condo complex as Babe Ruth!!

Wow, that is impressive!  Never knew that...  Did he ever meet Ruth?  I assume he was a few years younger than the Babe...

Why yes he did.  My dad showed me a picture awhile ago with THE BABE and my grandfather with their arms around eachother right outside the complex.  Very cool.  They weren't best friends or anything but they knew eachother and talked when they saw one another.

Tree you're forgetting the best athlete to come out of Stevenson...Chris Coleman!  And remember Tamika Catchings...and Pat Joyce.  There was also some women track and field person that was in the Olympics in the earl-mid 70's.    I forget here name though.

that's awesome. going to school with the Babe.  I guess frankie V. really doesn't compete with that.
