Title: AI: Arcade vs NES

I've been playing around with the arcade rom lately (which I've never really done before) and it strikes me as odd that there's a LOT of fielding problems for the computer.  They keep throwing to open bases.  I'm not sure why exactly this is happening, but it seems very frequent in the Arcade version, far more than the NES version.

Has anyone ever noticed this phenomenon?  Investigated it?

If you are playing on the same emulator then AI will be exactly the same.  In general I do think playing the NES or on the actual Arcade machine there really isn't any AI difference that I can detect in CPU fielding

If I recall correctly, as part of the BOP fiasco, I checked the original arcade ROMs for error probability on their teams, and found nothing that corresponded with the NES engine. There's definitely some differences in the AI algorithms.

It's not a difference in bops that I've noticed, it's that a lot of "lefty" hit towards 1st base make the first baseman come off the bag, then the 2nd baseman grab the ball and flings it to... no one.  Stupid computer.  So basically Coleman and Smith were tripling up almost every at bat.  I can't remember ever seeing that in the NES version, let alone 2-3 times a game.

I didn't say your concern had anything to do with BOPs. The point here is that the two games don't use identical AI routines, which I noticed while looking for error probabilities.

But he's playing on a ROM, probably with the same emulator, in that case they'd be identical.

The AI code nightwulf's referring to is in the ROM, not somehow contained in the emulator (which just replicates the NES or Vs. system's hardware).  I believe you can play a Vs. ROM on some NES emulators and on an arcade emulator like MAME, and it should behave the same in both instances.

Clarification: I'm reasonably sure that Re-Peat is playing with the actual arcade game ROM, not a modified NES ROM with arcade rosters.

I'm guessing the computer and fielding AI was revamped between arcade & NES versions.  In addition to adding BOPs, the NES version appears to have taken out some of the worst CPU fielding mistakes.  I wonder how the fielding compares to the original Family Stadium cart...

Do we have a copy of the original Family Stadium arcade ROM somewhere?  That is the first "real" version of RBI right, preceding the Famicom version?

i have the actual cart of Family Stadium...do you want me to do some tests or something?  or were you going to analyze the ROM itself?

I was just looking through the ROMs on Planet Emulation (http://planetemu.net/), which are generally pretty complete, and I can't find Family Stadium.  The arcade version was called World Stadium, but the earliest World Stadium is from '88.  I also looked under P (for "Pro Yakyuu") and the Vs. games, and found nothing there either.

Maybe the original version was on the Famicom?  I remember putting that there was a Japanese arcade game first in the FAQ, but at this point I cannot remember any of the details...
