Title: Ozzie Smith fact
Post by: malnuboy on 07/24/08, 09:04:45 PM
Apparently over the course of Ozzie's career there were more eclipses(all varieties) then home runs hit by Ozzie.

I heard it on the Jim Bruerer show, they brought it up because apparently he bailed on the appearance he was supposed to make on his show.

Ozzie Smith facts:

He's in the HOF because he back flipped before games.
Also has the third (I think) worst Batting average in the hall.
Wasn't 1/2 the player Barry Larkin was.

i decided to look up the thing about ozzie's batting average (.262 for his career)

tied with:
Luis Aparicio
Gary Carter
Reggie Jackson
Joe Tinker

better than:
Harmon Killebrew (.256)
Rabbit Maranville (.258)
Bill Mazeroski (.260)
Ray Schalk (.253)

so i guess he is tied for 4th lowest.  It's also pretty surprising that there are 5 guys who all have .262 career averages in the hall, especially when you consider that those are amongst the lowest averages, so there are relatively fewer of them.  I'd be a lot less surprised to see 5 .298 hitters in the hall.

If anyone deserves to get in the HoF strictly for his defense, it's Ozzie.

Hopefully Adam Dunn will continue doing what he does and makes the HoF with 500-600 HRs and a .200 AVG.

That would be sweet.  Put a picture of him in there smiling with his thumbs up wearing a shirt that says "I hit home runs or whiff!"

I've argued over this many, many times....but Ozzie Smith is the most undeserving player in the hall.  Bottom line.  Bar none.

That would be 5th lowest, no?

What about Mazeroski?

There are a bunch of players from the olden tyme days that aren't that good.

I agree with this and your comment about Barry Larkin being twice the player.
He is probably tied in most undeserving with Bill Maz and Kirby "Finally Skinny" Puckett.

I believe the correct answer is George Kelly (not George Kell, who was actually good).

Ozzie earned it on his defense (although I agree that Barry Larkin is at least as deserving).

Bill James had a list of 10 who don't deserve to be in the Hall awhile ago... his list: Fred Lindstrom, Jesse Haines, Tommy McCarthy, Lloyd Waner, George Kelly, Ross Youngs, Roger Bresnahan, Earle Combs, Jim Bottomley, and Chick Hafey.

There's no way Puckett & Ozzie are even close, I think Kirby is a HOF'er or at the very least way more deserving than Ozzie - best lifetime BA for a righty since Ted Williams, at least when he was inducted.

Plus the postseason heroics...

Plus he was a ladies man...

Plus he was from Chicago...

You can't debate this list of arguments...

Maybe you caught the drift that I absolutely hate Kirby Puckett; that fatass woman abuser.
Maybe I should have just left it at that, and the fact that 10 years is not enough to make it to the HOF.  And 2,300 career hits and 200 HRs doesn't cut it.
He got inducted for his HR in the 1991 WS and (mostly) because people felt sorry for him.

Yes, but most of us are not in the Hall of Fame either.

Oh dear.
