Title: RBI Birthday - Bobby Thompson turns 42
Post by: Gantry on 05/10/04, 07:21:38 PM
I can't use the term legend to describe Thompson, but happy birthday to big Rob!

As a real player, I don't have too much to say.  I guess a steady and consistent performer on the field.  Nothing too great, but a worthwhile addition to his team...

As far as RBI, I'll give him this dubious distinction - I think Robbie Thompson is the worst starting RBI player that at least half the people keep in.  Though he isn't at Santana or Owen level, he doesn't do anything.  The difference is that many people actually keep THompson in and keep the legend Harry Spilman on the bench...

Discuss Dee-Nee bretheren...

Thompson does have the distinction of being the worst player that is left in.  Probably him and Damn Gladden.  For years I left him in, getting out after out, weak grounder after weak grounder.  Then I saw the light:  Spilman.  Thank you, dee nee.

Minnesota is definitely a mess in terms of subs, for those who didn't see my new Minnesota writeup (http://dee-nee.com/rbi/minnesota.shtml), I've discussed the problems with having three terrible starters (Gladden, Gagne, Lombardozzi) and only two adequate subs (Vagina, Gene "Dee-Nee" Larkin).   Not the easiest decision, but I always gave Gladden the heave-ho...

I'm glad I can help spread the Spilman love.  He is definitely the most underrated player in the game.  I personally feel he should go leadoff, but I'm content as long as you put him in...

As soon as I started leading off with Spilman and put Aldrete in the 8 hole, San Fran became a whole new team.

Spilman makes SF that much stronger.  He's the fucking man.  I always play the matchup with the 8 hole.  Oh yeah, I actually leave Uribe in, I have no idea why.  He's fucking terrible.  I put Spilman in for Brenly, mostly just for spite, I think.

I'm a big Thompson fan. Give him a chance--he will do something good.

Brenly and Thompson are both decent performers for me...Thompson is a little soft, but not too bad.

I've given Bobby Thompson more than enough chances over the years, I am done with him.  Looks to me like San Fran has a large variety of lineups that people use...

To me, you have to keep Brenley in.  At least if you are only going to use two subs.  I can't see a valid reason for keeping Uribe or Thompson over Brenley.  I'll admit he's no world beater, but he's way better than those two losers...

I think I'll redo the San Fran page today...

PS - I too am Spilman at #1 and Aldrete at #8, my most successful lineup by far

I usually leave him in for 1 AB unless it's a crucial situation.
