Title: Differences in Fastball Speeds.
Post by: japetus462 on 05/12/04, 01:49:53 PM
Has anyone ever experienced this? One day your pitcher will be throwing 98-99....

the next he tops out at 94-95.

What causes this?

I've experienced it, especially with Dwight Gooden as put in my Mets Synopsis (http://dee-nee.com/rbi/mets.shtml).  As to why this happens, I'm not quite sure.  The fastballs always do vary, but some starters occasionally have a very low ceiling with their fastballs.  Sounds like a task for nightwulf...

I'm no programing whiz (Hell, I got kicked out of a college where I tried to major in CP.  That's another story, though :P), but it sounds like there's some kind of randomization/variable involved on the max (and perhaps minimum?) speed of a pitch.  Now, if Nightwulf could find and exploit it...  ;D

The only thing is that it is much more prevalent with certain pitchers, meaning I'm not sure if it's random.  Clemens and Ryan always throw smoke, but Gooden is hit or miss.  In fact, he's the only pitcher where I notice a disparity in fastball spped.  Are there any others?

A friend and I have been playing an ongoing series all week where he has AM and I have NY.  Gooden has started all of the 15 games we have played and I definitely agree that there are some games he just doesn't seem to have it.

Apparently didn't get the 8-ball in time.

Yep.  I think Darryl sometimes has the same problem.
