Title: 2 Man RBI league
Post by: TbT on 08/17/08, 10:31:28 AM
The ol thursday night RBI tourneys I set up at the bar last winter paid off.   A guy I met thru there has a decent game and weve played semi regularily ever since.  Last night we conducted a draft and rolled through 10 games of exhibition play.

1 starting pitcher/ATG style.  Each team plays each opponent 4 times.  2 seperate 2 game sets.  Overall each team will play a total of 20 games.

Daft order
Round 1
Curt-NL
TBT-Bos

2
Curt-AL
TBT-Det(Ive always told him AL is not that great)

3
Curt-Cal
TBT-SF

4
Curt-Min
TBT-NY

5
Curt-STL
TBT-Hou

We havent divided things up into 2 seperate leagues just yet.  randomly do that today with top 3 team from each league making playoffs.

The results of some preseason action
Bos @ NL
NL wins both 5-3, and 3-2.  Game 1 saw hurst with a 3-1 lead in maybe the 6th but he blew that giving up a pair of solo HRs.  Game 2 saw a misplayed short flyball between the SS/CF lead to a couple runs in the 1st inning that proved to be the difference.

AL @ DET
DET takes both games 8-4, and 11-1.  The big 3 from the AL did little damage and Trammel/Gibby had a couple huge games.

SF @ CAL
SF takes both contests 4-2, and 4-1.  close games that saw SF pull things out late.

MIN @ NY
NY takes both games 9-1, and 5-1.  Orosco starts game 1 and Ojeda comes in for a solid performance as well.  NY gets 4 runs in the bottom of the 1st thanks to a Strawberry shot.  Blyleven runs out of gas early and the hits keep coming.  Mazzilli adds a solo PH homer.   Game 2 sees orosco go 7+ innings.  Gooden then comes in a firebals his way thru the end of the game.

HOU @ STL
HOU takes both games 9-1 and 3-2.
Game 1 sees Hou pour on an 8 run 5th inning with an absurd amount of singles thru the infield holes.  Game 2 has coleman get a triple off the wall to get the scoring going early.  Lopes has his way on the basepaths in both games and a Reynolds home in the 8th proives the difference.

8-2 for me on the day.  Hes been too accustomed to using NL every time we play(prolly cause he can win with them).  I figured he'd struggle with the weaker teams and he did.

probably doing top 3 making the playoffs in each league.  undecided though.  West should be highly competative.

NL @ HOU
Game 1:
The Houston bats are on fire vs fernando and they rack up 10 hits thru 5 inings and plate a couple runs.  hou rolls 4-2 as kerfeld and Ryan combine on a 3 hitter.

Game 2:  NL homers early and often and stakes out to a 5-1 lead.  Davis and Bass go back to back to pull within 5-3 in the 7th.  NL tacks a couple more and rolls 7-3.

Week 2:  the scheduled 2-game sets coming up

NY(1-1) @ STL(0-2)
MIN(2-0) @ BOS(2-0)
AL(1-1) @ DET(2-0)
CAL(0-2) @ HOU(1-1)
SF(0-2) @ NL(1-1)

We have a little history with the SF/NL match-up.  I pulled off a huge come from behind win a while back with SF, then gave up an extra inning homer to lose game 2.  Battled that damn NL as tough as I could.

NY @ STL
NY wins game1-0.  Heep goes yard for the only score.
NY takes game 2   11-1  carter and Clark exchange homers.  NY tacks on 4 in the 8th and 5 in the 9th.

Strawberry has a great series with about 5 singles a couple runs and a couple stolen bases.

Bos @ MIN
Bos takes game one  9-4 thanks to a 6 run 6th that included 5 home runs that inning and 3 in a row by Evans, Gedman, and Burks.  MIn had taken a 4-3 lead in the bottom of the 5th.

Bos rolls in game two 9-3.  Another barage of solo homers paves the way for the win.

AL @ DET
Game 1

Detroit sneaks by thanks to a greeter home run off both Henke and Righetti and wins 2-1.

Game 2:
AL homers 7 times however a 4 run 3rd and a 3 run 4th provide the spark and Detroit rolls 11-8.

CAL @ HOU
Game 1:
Cal knocks out 3 homers and rols 4-1.

Game 2:   Thon goes yard in a pinch hit role, and Gdavis hits a solo as well.  With HOU leading 2-1 in the top of the 9th Joyner is on 2nd and Jackson singles to left. Joyner rounds 3rd and heads home but the throw is strong and joyner retreats to 3rd but gets thrown out to end the game.  HOu sneaks by 2-1.

SF @ NL
Game 1:
NL takes a huge 5-1 lead at the end of 1.  Spilman hits 3 solo shots through out the game and SF rallies to tie things up.  In the 10th a tired bedrosian serves up a homer and a 6-5 SF lead.  murphy goes yard in the bottom half to tie.  In the 11th, bedrock throwing slow as hell gets hammered and SF piles on 7 runs as they roll 13-6.

Game 2:   SF gets 3 solo home runs and NL mounts a late comeback but SF prevails 3-2.

Next weeks match-ups
CAL @ NY
HOU @ STL
NL @ BOS
DET @ MIN
AL @ SF

Huge 2 game set for NL.  A sweep by Bos really criples them in the standings early on.
STL is in desperate need of a win and playing HOU is ideal.

The west could get turned on its ear if CAL/AL have a strong showing this week, coupled with a DET sweep over MIN.

Runs for/Runs against
DET 31-13  +18
Bos  25-8  +17
NY 19-6   +13
SF 21-15  + 6
HOU 10-14  -4
NL 17-23  -6
AL 14-20  -6
MIN 14-23  -9
CAL  9-21  -12

Game 1:
Ny plates 5 in the 1st and strawberry goes yard twice.  Boone adds 2 homers and Ny rolls 7-2.
Game 2:  NY rolls in 7 innings  11-1.  Dykstra had a retarded series.  probably got retired only twice in the 2 games.

HOU @ STL
Game 1:
  Hou rolls 9-2 thanks to a 6 run 3rd.
Game 2: HOU wins 6-1.

Randon observations.....Boston/Detroit both 4-0 doesnt surprise me.  NL being 1-3 does big time.

For a while Curt was killing me with NL.  lots of NL over BOS 2 game sweeps.  I thought he had arived as an RBI player.  maybe not yet.  Starting to think he was really relying on the long ball too much and that has started to dry up for the time being.  Also he runs himself out of far too many innings trying to steal bases too often or taking an extra base.

Playing gritty with houston is on par.  Going .500 seemed possible.  4-2 right now but a sweep of STL makes that record inflated.

I expected to be tough with NY.  that is my team, but a 5-1 start was beyond my expectations.  CALs 1-5 start is a surprise as well.  Curt has played exceedingly tougn with MIn though.  2-2 record doesnt do it justice.  AL looks shaky and SF looked alright in sneaking by NL in a 2 game sweep.

Game 1:
NL 3  Bos 7

Hrs by Armas/Burks/2 hendersen  4 run 7th seals it.
2 by dawson.

Game 2:
NL 7  Bos 5

3 run 1st and 5th for NL.  Bos plates 4 in the 7th but a late murphy homer seals it.

Game 1:  DET 9  MIN 4
6 Det homers

Game 2: Det 3  MIN 2
2 run Evans homer in the 8th is the difference.

Game 1:
AL 2  SF 8

5 SF homers and a no hitter thru 8 1/3 innins for SF pitchers.

Game 2:
AL 3  SF 6

2 mcgwire homers.

Orosco + Ojeda spells doom.  Gooden is an alright game 2 option.

NYs schedule so far...
NY vs AL is a pretty damn decent match-up.  AL has only 3 guys who can beat you.
NY vs STL is a good match-up
NY vs CAL is not as good but CAL is still fairly righty heavy and the double Os can get it done on the mound.  CALs pitching blows goats.

Week 4 games

AL @ HOU
NY @ MIN
NL @ DET
BOS @ CAL
STL @ SF

NL needs to sweep vs DET this week to entertain any thoughts of claiming this division.  HOU has a solid challenge ahead with the AL on tap to try and hold thier ground.

AL and CAL need some wins pronto as well.  Playoff hope are fading  Considering CAL has 4 more games with BOS and 2 more with DET they may be fucked.  AL has the same route with 4-BOS and 2-DET remaining.  Not good.

NY/SF both have winnable 2 game sets to further solidfy themselves in the division.  MIN is teetering on dropping out of div crown contention.

AL @ HOU
Game 1:  AL 1  HOU 0
Kerfeld goes a solid 5+ innings and Ryan gives up a homer to Brett providing the difference.

Game 2:  AL 1  HOU 3.  Hatcher goes yard and HOu manufactures a couple more runs.  McGwire adds a solo late.

NY @ MIN
Game 1:  NY 5  MIN 4.  Carter hits a 3 run HR followed by Strawberry in the 1st.  HRBek ads a 2 run shot and MIn plates 3 in the 1st.  MIn ties it up late and carter hits the game winning homer in the top of the 11th.

Game 2:  NY 5 MIN 2.  Tied @ 1 in the 7th, a 4 run inning for the Mets does MIN in.

NL @ DET
Game 1:

A throwing error by detroit allows the ball to go past the catcher in a rundown to the backstop and NL plates 2 for a 3-1 lead in the 5th inning.  The same fate for NL occurs and trammel and gibby score on the error in the 8th to tie it up 4 all.
Trammel goes yard in the bottom of the 10th for the walk off and DET wins 5-4.

Game 2:
NL takes a 1-0 lead with a schmidt homer.  DET fnally gets on the board in the 7th with a Gibby double followed by Evans and Nokes homers.  Gibby adds a solo in the 8th and DET cruises 6-1.

BOS @ CAL
Game 1:

Armas homers on the 1st pitch of the game and that summed up the outcome.    BOS adds 6 in the 2nd inning, 3 more in the 8th and 4 in the 9th.  6 Homers in total and rolls 14-1.

Game 2:
Cal hammers Stanley in the 1st for 6 runs.  The lead holds until the 5th when BOS gets 2 back.  2 more in the 7th, and Bos plates 1 with the leading run at the plate in the 9th but a ground out end the comeback.  CAL sneaks by 6-5.  Wilfong hits 2 homers to lead the offensive charge.

STL @ SF will be played later.

SF wins game 1, 1-0 and game 2, 3-0.

NL wins game 1 vs NY 2-1.
NY takes game 2 with a rally 6-4.

Game 1 was a solid outing by Orosco and ojeda.  1 mistake by each pitcher.  Valenzuela had a solid effort as well.

Game 2 saw NL take a 3-0 1st inning lead but NY salted away.  It was 4-2 when things went haywire for sutcliffe in the 5th.  He was tired but stayed in and surrendered 3 runs.  NY tacked on an insurance run and Gooden pitched well down the stretch.

SF dealing! Good to see their pitching staff is being used properly. They should always be shutin out the Cards...the Cards are the easiest team to pitch to using the giants pitching staff...

SF is about a lock to make the playoffs.  Had they not dropped those 2 games to MIN which were both late comebacks they'd be 8-0.  SF is still pretty stout in 1 sp.

HOU @ MIN.  MIN stakes out to a 3-0 lead early with 3 solos, but Hou claws back and eventually takes a 8-3 lead late.  gaetti hits a solo late.  HOU rolls 8-4.

MIN gets up 5-1 late.  Davis hits a 2 run shot and Bass follows with a single and steals 2nd, but the HOU fails to rally.

a 3 run homer by Garner in game 1 tied things up...later in game 1 a Bop on a Bass fly out lead to an onslaught of single and a RBI single by Ryan as well.

How the hell does Houston score 8 runs

They do so with many less homers than other teams.
Keep in mind its 1 SP meaning scores are up and you've got to get that extra inning or so out of your starter.  I wont run a guy till hes gassed, but there are some situations in a game where severe executive decisions are made as to keep a guy in or not.

Garner 3 run homer in a PH situation got the ball rolling....also HOU isnt bad at manufacturing runs with all that spped at the top when they have a good game at the plate.  Ryan also had a 1 or 2 run single in that game as well.

there was also a play at the plate where a random fielder standing next to the catcher fucked curt out of an out by catching the ball.
