Hey Team,
I was wondeing if anyone else has the in game rituals that t and I seem to...I know that a lot of you will have many that have to do with drinking...however, t and I usually play sober (that may have just gotten us kicked off the forum...sorry t)... so I was just fishing for some more great things to add to the repitoire
-- Chess Match-- this is done in two ways...one, it is a non verbal statement made by t and I looking at eachother after almost every pitch...especially if one of us takes on a backdoor slider that just gets the back end of the plate...the other way is a verbal recognition of a great at bat....either fouling off the ball or the continuous guessing game of where the ball is going to be thrown (inside, outside, right off the plate...etc...)...thus... a "chess match" will be tossed out there
-- Play of the game-- there are usually 10-15 plays of the game...basically, whenever the player lays out for the ball....you get it alot in the infield...our favorites are when you get the guy scaling the wall...a very rare occasion...this will often be uttered mid sentence.... "so I just think the Celts are better off, play of the game, having leon powe in the game"
-- show me-- this is a wonderful aspect when we actually go to a straight pitch format for a pitch/batter...there is no written ruling to this...but when one of us is feeling cocky, or when t is up with wade boggs...a quick "show me" is uttered and the ball is coming right down the plate...the only time a straight pitch is required by rule is when a pitch is thrown for a stirke when the other person wants a substitution.... this happens more than it should
-- The Wizzard Rule-- any time that Ozzie smith hits a homer...in any situation...I have to buy t a CD...i think its only happened once since we established that rule..
--the home run tin whistle-- this was a celebration started when we were in the same apartment...and messabiscuts left his tin whistle around...we would play a tune on the whistle whenever we hit a homer...and now, sans whistle, we still re create the sound and dance...it doesnt happen on every homer...but its always a winner
--personalized celebrations--- when kirk gibson, mike schmidt or dave henderson hit a home run, you need to do their celebratory reaction...the gibby limp and slot machine pull....the schmidt shadow boxing fist barrage.... and, my favorite, the dave henderson big leap and backwards trot....a classic
and one long gone tradition.... the writeup
for a short while...right around the time t and I were both working at pointless jobs that gave us limitless time to be next to a computer...we would do write ups (a la the tecmo super bowl write ups) after each series/game...the most famous being the series that jose oquendo came in to lead the cardnials to a game 7 victory leading to his now famous "10 year, 400 million dollar contract" he has been signed to....classic
The Hendu celebration is my favorite.
To think Oquendo has four more years on that contract. It seemed reasonable at the time, given his heroics, but I'm beginning to think that was a terrible contract.
Im surprised the cardinals continue to renew your contract....you've run that ship aground too many times
Aside from trying to throw it into the wall after every out at first, I also try to do the "wings" thing with the ump on every uncatchable foul ball, although if there's a runner on and Octo and I are playing, we tend to have the baserunner and fielder run into each other to make it look like they're fighting.
Pretty mature.
B does the same thing - throws it into the wall after every out at first. And I'm quite certain we've tried to create a mock fight too. When it comes down to it, there are only so many ways one can be creative in this game.
I recall a few years ago some folks were posting their error records from throwing the ball off the wall... I want to say it was somewhere around 15.
I usually throw down the line rather than toss it to the dugout.. I forgot about that one... Another one is saying "fred" during an infield fly situation... We had a friend that would fuck that up on purpose to turn a double play... Douche bag
- I've always loved trying to bring an infielder all the way up to the wall during an opposition HR... anyone else?? Usually it's just a corner of the screen but I grew pretty good to about a 75% success rate 8)
- throw the out ball into the wall, as quickly as I can
- turn a mock triple play before the next batter comes up
- see how many practice swings I can get in during a subsitution... the piss is when they pitch too early/on time & I'm out of whack (I actually believe there are certain PH batters for which there is no extra time given)

This is a good call, when sober and a home run is hit to center, I try to get two fielders visible, and then (instead of going the glory hole route) make them shake back and forth all upset like.
This is made easier by the fact that when Octo hits one out he REFUSES to run to second and it ends up taking about three extra seconds.
It's just rude to not run it out, who the fuck does he think he is, Griffey?
My friend yells "git some" on at least 75% of plays.
Any time Manny hits a homer on our modified cart it's "choo know it".
Damn, there's a bunch more, but we haven't played in months...
One of my quirks is wanting to punch Alex Trevylan's friend in the face whenever I play him.
much like the getting the infielder to the wall....when i give up a homer, I also get the OF in the field and have them dance to the firework canon blasts....

I find that crushing his soul is usually good enough, but there are definitely times when we share this quirk!
Wow these topics just keep getting better. I remember doing all this stuff, especially the "wings" thing and throwing the ball into the wall or down the line after an out.
I have a weird one. Everytime I play, if I get a hit out to the wall, or anywhere, (anything except a home run) I'll just stop at 1st base & try & do the same thing for the next hitter. The bases get loaded so easily this way, if you can get the hits, so you'll have alot more grand slam chances. I've hit 2 or more in an inning many times this way. The computer's so easy anyway, doing it this way gives them a little chance & makes the game longer instead of the 10-run rule.
Ok so it's not really a quirk......
Oh, I ALWAYS used to move the hitter or the pitcher back & forth to the beat of the music, my friends & I usually laughed & got a kick out of it.
I have my SNES hooked up, this makes me want to play RBI again, such a wonderful game!
Yet another... & more of a strategy to run up the score:
- I hold up my advanced runner as long as possible at 3rd, letting my batter head for 2nd - letting my advanced runner go right before the outfielder gets the ball...
the outfielder will always throw home no matter how little chance he has, & I will always get doubles & triples

Can't you hook them both up simultaneously? I have them set up that way at my house.
Oh, I know they can be hooked up together, I still haven't tried doing that..... It doesn't matter to me though to unhook one & put the other one on, takes 2 minutes.
Oh yeah, I ALWAYS used to do the "Tettleton" whenever I played. It does seem to give you a bit more power & carry.
Ive never been able to get the tettleton down...i dont think it works as well with curve pitching...

I find it improves a pitcher's batting skill, but no one else.
& only when I'm standing at the top of the box.
Otherwise it ususally just causes a lot of tall foul balls
The only thing I do is when I play with my brother and I hit a ground ball right at someone in his infield I say "noonan, zilla, boot it", "sniper" or "buckner" because that is what we would yell at practice or at games in high school when we played on the varsity team together.
Good times.

Didn't nightwulf verify that the "tettleton" gives you no decrease in power?
I use this very often in ATG play as it gives you a split second longer to read the pitch.
One habit I have is that on a groundball that will be close at 1st base, I will always hack away at the B button as fast as I can. I know this doesn't make the runner go any faster, but I just cannot kick this habbit I have had since I was 7 or 8 years old.
I actually keep hitting A instead of B when I'm running... It's not helpful at all... But it feels good
These may be quirks, or you may consider them techniques... Opinion based I guess.
I sometimes like to leave my batter in a fully twisted (post-swing) position, and then release the button as the pitch comes and then immediately press the button to actually swing... I started doing this because I often get way too far in front of the ball, but it also looks funny.
I don't do this unless I'm playing against Nolan, Doc, or the Rocket but I know some people who do this as a rule... When their batter gets up to the plate they tap the swing button so the batter is stuck in a pre-bunt position (with a diagonal bat) prior to the pitch. This way you get a little quicker of a swing, and I don't know the numbers behind it but it seems like there's no power penalty for swinging like this.
Another quirk/technique I've seen is to have baserunners go back and forth in the base path on an infield fly to obscure the shadow of the ball and make it tougher on the defense.
Oh, another personal quirk of mine is to shatter my controller when Reggie gets out of the park 3 times on me in one game. I HATE Reggie.
If there's two outs and a runner on and I hit a ground ball to a fielder, I'll run the runner back to first and cause an out when he crosses with the batter instead of giving the defense the satisfaction of making the out.
If someone goes for the Armas and just misses, we gentleman it up and run the batter out.

That's what the other guys were referring to as "The Tettleton" (named after Mickey Tettleton's batting stance). Mike Riley, a multiple-time national RBI champion, does this every time.
my ritual consists of throwing the ball into right field after a routine groundout to first with no one on. don't know how it started, and it isnt a taunt, just a habit i picked up somewhere.

when playin in the COTUT this year, i adopted the tettleton a few weeks before to try and make up for my lack of curve pitch experience and give me a little more time to react to the pitches. surprisingly, i noticed i hit way better, especially when moving up in the box while swinging.
