Title: bonk and then an out?
Post by: erhajj on 06/02/04, 08:53:24 AM
Has anyone ever had this happen?
I was just playing the new 2004 rom and I pinch hit with Mark McGwire.  He hit a very hard groundball back to the pitcher who bonked it.  The ball bounced so hare off of him that it went right to the catcher who threw McGwire out at first.  Has anyone had this happen before and what should we call it?

I've never seen it, I've seen it get pretty close to the catcher, and wondered if it could happen.  I'm guessing in the ROM McGwire's Power is high (1000?), plus he had the +64 PH bonus, probably need a perfect hit in order to do it.

McGwire has a 942 power rating on the rom and he was pinch hitting so he did get the bonus.  This must have been a perfect hit.  I don't know if I could do it again.  But it happened.  Should this be a new item in the glossary if somebody can come up with a name for it?

Pinball BOP.

I've seen it too. Sometimes the ball bounces far away from the fielder than others. I'm not sure why it happens.
Long Bonk?

I think it is relative to how hard the ball is hit.

I've gotten many guys out after bonks, but they were short bonks, never a pinball back to the catcher.  That's pretty crazy.  Big Mac must have really killed that fucker.

When the ball bounces off a fielder that bad, we call it a "Super Bop".  I don't think I have ever seen a catcher pick one up, to throw a man out at first.  We typically see the Super Bop bounce off the first baseman, usually resulting in the normal way, an out at first.  But there are times, that a base-runner will beat out the bopped first baseman.

By the way, I like "Pinball"...

I like the "pinball bop" name the best also.
Seriously, can we put this in the glossery?

Maybe it should be called a Wagner, in honor of Billy Wagner, who had a ball get crushed off the side of his dome and damned near end up in the dugout...

Bill Swift had it happen off of the bat of gary gaetti.  The ball rolled into foul territory and the hitter went to second.  This was in the kingdome.
