I'm looking for other Angeleno-types to get a league, tourney, or other competitive RBI endeavour organized. Anyone else in?
Is Orange County close enough?
Hey, have Nintendo controller, will travel...
Is that Matt Nokes or the kid from Heaven Can Wait? ;)
Naw, the kid frm Heaven Can Wait batted righty, I think...
So, we've got 2 people here in all of Southern California who want to try to get a league or tournament together? What would the California Angels says about this?
Somewhere, Bobby Grich is crying in his moustache...
My Cali geography isn't great, but these guys probably aren't too far:

I saw that link, but San Francisco is definitely NOT Southern Cal. And, since they haven't had a tournament in two years, I'd hardly call them active players.
Somewhere in Heaven, Donnie Moore weeps.
(OK, in Hell, but I'm trying to be nice).
I'm from the OC... i play on computer though, may be a bit rusty. also non-alcoholic. curve pitch
I also play on my PC. Teddyballgame113 or fightonusc, would you guys play online?
i'll play online...
I'm thinking about starting a Yahoo! group for online RBI players. The idea is that you would sign up there and leave your IM information. You could either a) go into a chat room and wait for someone else who wants to play or b) find a list of people with IM, and start messaging to see who wants to play?
Would you guys sign up for this? Lemme know, and I'll get cracking on it, and then promote it to the larger Dee-Nee message board.
As for us...my Yahoo! IM is fightonusc. Feel free to ping me anytime I'm online to see if I'm up for playing...
fightonusc,
That sounds good to me!
On the online baseball note, there is http://games.groups.yahoo.com/group/rbionlinebaseball/ (http://games.groups.yahoo.com/group/rbionlinebaseball/), but they don't seem to be active right now. Anyone know what's up with this?
I love the idea and would sign up!
I think several of it's members are also dee-nee members. Gantry, Nightwulf, etc.
That yahoo group never got off the ground. You can all also use the Online RBI board here on the forums to setup games, that's what it's there for...
Gantry,
Cool. I totally didn't want to step on anyone's toes.
Los Angeles RBi! Yes! Please! How many NES's/cartridges can we get together? I want walls of projected RBI. yes.
i'm from LA area. i'm in anytime. i'm from the hammer of the gods site, (http://rbibaseball.tripod.com/home.html) and yes we have not been active recently, but when you are master of the game, you can come out of hiding anytime and challenge the best. keep me informed if you set something up.
For some reason I had always assumed that Hammer of the Gods folks were in the Bay Area. Did you move?
Anyway, I'm certainly up for getting a tournament together, perhaps a weekend in July? Since I'm married, having it at my apartment probably wouldn't make the missus very happy. If someone is single and has a place with an NES, that would be totally Dee Nee. However, I'm more than willing to host if necessary.
july. i could host but my apt is small and only has 2 chairs. it would be pretty ridiculous. who's hostworthy?
I'm up for a league. I live in Rancho Cucamonga and will also travel. Let me know.
slawson3030@yahoo.com
It seems like there's interest in a league/tournament of some sort in Los Angeles, but we're all way too pathetic to be able to host it at places, either because a) we live in a place the size of a broom closet, b) we're married, or c) both (that's me). I am willing to organize an event if someone wants to step forward and volunteer their place for the evening.
Anyone who's interested can let me know.
Sounds like a good chance to get some games, I'd be willing to help any way I can. I would email Dennis at the Hammer of the Gods about playing because he doesn't come to the board too often...
I'm willing to host, as long as there are no insane, axe-murderers planning to attend. I live in Rancho Cucamonga (10 freeway at the 15 freeway).
we can always do what COTUT guys are doing, and just find some travelodge or po-dunk motel and hook up the rbi there. that way we can raise hell and not have to clean up, and not feel guilty for ignoring our wives. This place can be centrally located to all of us as well.
I'm actually fairly intrigued about the motel concept...as long as the deposit goes on someone else's credit card...Otherwise, it's looking like Rancho Cucamonga.
Anyone who is interested, e-mail me at fightonusc@yahoo.com. I'm thinking sometime in late July...I'll defintely e-mail Dennis @ Hammer of the Gods, as soon as we get some logistics figured out.
I'm up for a motel location. I'll email you fightonusc and figure it out.
motel's are good. rancho is far from me. i found a place where we can have it though [2 tvs, 1 nes, 1 rbi], in echo park, and rowdiness is more than tolerated.
Boku,
Let me know more about the location in Echo Park. That sounds intriguing.
Everyone else,
Right now, I think the plan is to shoot for sometime in early to mid August. I've got a few people who have expressed interest. Entries will probably be capped at eight people for now, unless demand becomes just too overwhelming.
I'm probably going to set up a Yahoo! group for this to take entries and discuss the layout and format about it. Once again, feel free to e-mail me at fightonusc@yahoo.com if you have any questions about it.
Hey guys...I know this might sound crazy, but if this tourney happens, I might be interested in coming out from OH...
I had so much fun at the COTUT that I can't wait 1-2 years for the next one!
My questions are:
1) What style of play?
2) What is the entry fee?
3) How many players?
4) Allstar teams included or excluded?
If this tourney actually does end up happening, I'll be more than happy to tell you guys everything that worked for the COTUT...no sense in reinventing the wheel, so to speak.
The COTUT has a fantastic bracket set up...

Well, I'm all about democracy, so I'd like to get some feedback from potential players beforehand, but here are my initial thoughts...
1) I would lean towards curve, for two reasons - a) it makes games go quicker, letting us get more play in over the course of the tournament (no 22-21 games that can take forever) and b) if we're playing into the stereotype of West Coast sports teams being "finesse" teams, then curve is the "finesse" way to play, versus the rough and tumble, hard-drinking ways of straight pitch.
2) I'm not too sure about how much to make the entry fee. I certainly would want to keep it less than the COTUT, at least this first time. Ideally, I'd like to make this something that happens a few times a year, so I wouldn't want to get crazy with entry fees. Probably $50 maximum (minus any fees for motel room rental if we go that route)?
3) I'd need at least eight to even think about doing this. Certainly, 16 players seems to be a maximum, unless we had two TV sets and could have multiple games running at the same time.
4) Definitely no All-Star teams; that's bush league.
I've set up a Yahoo! group for West Coast RBI Baseball, which hopefully will be used to work out the logistics of the tournament. Anyone who had contacted me with interest (and whose e-mail I have) should have received an invite. Anyone else is free to sign up at http://games.groups.yahoo.com/group/westcoastrbibaseball/ (http://games.groups.yahoo.com/group/westcoastrbibaseball/). I'm hopefully that we can get something together this August, so spread the word if you know people Southern California or who are willing to travel to the area.
Great idea, I'm in. It's nice to see some West Coast RBI representation.
It's gotta be curve style tourney. I like the way the COTUT set up their brackets too, my only departure to their rules is I would suggest the use of only 1 starter per game.
I think JoeDirt and I are sorta on the same level... we'd fly out to California for a tournament if a) it was 16 players, b) it was curve style, and c) if the entry fee is high enough.
Personally speaking, I would like to see around a $50 entry fee for two reasons... first off, it would draw more out-of-staters. secondly, it would make the tourney more competitive/interesting if you have decent prize money up for grabs.
One final note, Colin Foster might also be willing to come with me from Chicago. So if you guys shoot for a 16 player tournament, you could end up with at least 3 players from the last COTUT (maybe more if Riley, Carden, Podgorski, and Callan are interested).

I'm going to break this off into a separate thread, since the tournament is actually starting to come to fruition...
