We are going to migrate the forums off the dee-nee server, which has been running the same software for a good 7-8 years, to a new server named ward. Ward is bigger, 64-bit, faster and will run a much more current version of Linux (main OS), Apache (webserver) and MySQL (database). At the same time we are going to upgrade the forum software (SMF) from 1.1.2 to 1.1.9 - which is likely just slight updates and security fixes.
Nightwulf has done all the work here, but he's successfully completed a test migration already. The key to moving servers though is to take down the forums so no new data creeps in - as a result expect the forums to be down tomorrow from 11:30pm until Thursday morning.
The main website will still be on the old server for a bit, but getting the forums off is the #1 priority - once we do this we can focus on an upgrade to SMF 2.0
1.1.9 to 2.0? I'm not sure my fellow dee nee mouth breathers could handle such a jump.
Don't worry it's just 1.1.9 tomorrow, doubt you'll notice anything except some shit not working that we missed.
You won't notice much, other than a Dee-Nee upgrade not taking all night. The database upgrade during the trial run took about 15 minutes, as opposed to 3-4 hours on the current hardware.
is anyone else worried that Gantry's avaiator seems to be broken?
also, where is swampnet in all this?
i thought the end of the world was coming in 2012...

I think the pic I linked to is gone, oh well Chewing had run its course anyway
Don't forget to call Arlo Pear for help.
isnt moving servers a rush album
It sounds like another term for taking a crap
Gotta admit, I'm pretty excited to finally start transitioning off the old server.
Next task for me is to the wikis moved over, one for work and the spammed up RBIdb. Problem is updating 57 versions of MediaWiki, I may be better off copying each page over by hand if I can find a way to do the images with minimum effort.
In case anyone hadn't noticed, the server being named "Ward" should tell you how long this project has been in the works. Gantry and I are the laziest people ever.
The admin group needs a go-getter...
bnatrual?
:D
Took a nap, bought 2 Diet Mountain Dews and upgrading Pidgin (http://www.pidgin.im/) as we speak. I'm ready for this bitch, which is funny because my only established work will take about 2 minutes.
Wikis are next, they will be moved over sooner rather than later.
So what's everybody gonna do during the 15 minutes of downtime? Do you want to meet up at the Stitch and Bitch forums?
I'm in...
do you think the server will be down for the long length of time you metnioned in the original post or did you already do it?
I had no idea how long it would be down when I first posted. In this case nightwulf has done all the testing beforehand, usually we just jump right in. Often times an upgrade will take a couple hours to go through the database, probably something to do with the 500,000 thousand plus posts. I always give more time to be safe, but this sounds like an hour downtime tonight. See that? I did it again!
is the emoticon board gone too? i guess i missed it.
T-Minus one hour!
NO DONT DO IT I HAVE SO MUCH I WANT TO POST IN THE NEXT TWO HOURS!!!!!!!!!!!!
IT'S ALIVE!!!!!
Working out some little kinks but so far so good... You happened to post before we fixed the clock so don't worry about that
Clock's still an hour off.
dear god, it's beautiful *
* - i am typing this from my laptop, which gantry helped me out of a jam with not ten minutes ago. a new server and computing help, is there nothing he can't do?

Clock's still an hour off.
It sure is, must be a time zone setting - I'll look into it now
So what's the difference?
When we get it done, nothing. Moved it to a new server and did a slight upgrade of the software which was bug and security fixes.
Time Zone fixed, but I'm not sure why I had to make in offset in the forum admin settings. Let me know if the time is right for you east/west coasters
Testing some shit:
8)
:POW:
That last one didn't show up properly.
nice.
I'm not sure if anyone cares, but "Who's Online" doesn't automatically split up users and guests.

Fixed. Chat is working. I think I got everything else.
Nice! Do I even want to know how you got the package working?

har har .... little do they know I was already hired by G to infiltrate the minions and eventually force spellcheck on everyone , by driving them into a spelling frenzy.
Emoticon preparations are continuing nicely G, will be ready for operation smiley @ 4 hundered hours.
OK, now back to the other board
Ward is holding up well, if there are any little glitches let us know...
I think I've noticed something. Seems to be some annoying activity on the politics forum. See what you can do
Just noticed the new user and did a google search in case it was, ya know, another one of them.
For whatever its worth, I found this (http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=310558.0)
I have no idea what any of it means, but it sounded bad.
And just like that he's gone.
Nevermind then.
Nightwulf? Or Gantry?
One more migration detail I've noticed - the favorite icon no longer shows up for all the forum pages, making it harder to tell when I have a tab open to the forums in Firefox.

I copied over the favicon, let me know if you have any more trouble. It always showed up for me so I can't test...

Wow we have good timing because that account tries to hack the board, but the technique they used was fixed in 1.1.9 - could have been ugly if they tried on the old board...
