Title: 2nd-generation RBI-er sighting
Post by: BeefMaster on 06/18/04, 08:58:23 AM
I was at a Rochester Honkers game yesterday (summer college league), and starting at DH for the opposing St. Cloud River Bats was Jack Morris' son, Erik.  He went 1-5 with a homer and got hit by a pitch (one of 10 HPs during the game).  I found out on the news that evening that Jack was actually at the game, sitting on the "Sports Deck" on the other side of the field, but I didn't see him.

Nice pre-WATN scouting Beef, hopefully he can step it up to the next level.   Does that mean young Jack n' Coke is playing college ball?

Correct - he's at Michigan State.

The Northwoods League has had several Twins-connected players (it's mostly in Minnesota, with a few teams in neighboring states and provinces) - Gary Gaetti's son played for St. Cloud a year or two ago (I'm not sure where he is now), and Toby Gardenhire, son of Twins manager Ron Gardenhire, plays for Rochester (he walked in his only plate appearance yesterday).

Rochester Honkers

Couldn't they have come up with a cooler name than Honkers?

Rochester is overrun with Canada Geese thanks to a power plant that keeps the lake in the center of town perpetually thawed.  I guess people think of them as a symbol of the city (we also have the original Mayo Clinic, but "Doctors" is a pretty dumb team name, too), and "Honkers" was apparently catchier than "Birds that Crap Everywhere and Stand in the Middle of the Road".

My mom hit a bird the other day and the fucking thing got lodged in the front grate of the car.  My poor brother had to wrench the thing out.  Hilarious.

Jack Morris' parents used to live in my home town here in northern Michigan, a couple houses down from my house. A homeless woman peed on their porch before.

Here's another one...not sure if this was already pointed out:

June 4, 2003 - Taylor Mattingly selected by the Yankees in the First-Year Player Draft - Taylor Mattingly, oldest son of Don Mattingly, was selected in the 42nd round (pick #1262) by the Yankees. Taylor attended high school at Evansville Central High School.

I think Frank Viola's daughter made the Olympic diving team... ...I'm married now so I have to watch the occasional fringe sport Olympic qualifying round, but I don't have to pay attention.

I happened to be browsing the Northwoods League's official website, and there was a press release listing Northwoods League players who were picked in the MLB draft.  Among them: Erik Morris (Jack's son), picked in the 44th round by the Phillies; and Frank Viola III of the Alexandria Beetles, picked in the 29th round by the White Sox.

The elder Viola threw BP in Alexandria recently - it was the top story on the team's website.

Man, a lot of action out there!  You guys think I should list minor-league guys as well?  never hurts to have more RBI'ers, but I"m not sure about this one...

Nah - the page would get too crowded with minor-leaguers added.  I'm just doing some "advanced scouting" and thought it would be of interest on the forum.  Feel free to leave the page as-is.

I kinda think it'd be cool to have 'em up there...but I'm not the one who'd be spending the time doing it, so what right do I have to say?
