Title: Favorite Other NES Sports Games
Post by: justinkinnunen on 06/30/04, 03:29:49 PM
Of course TSB and Tecmo Bowl were classics
I like John Elway's QB, I used to play a bit of Play Action FB when I was a kid too...I actually pull out 10 yard fight every once in a while it's kind of a hoot to play a couple of games just for the nostalgia

what are your guys fav sports games and maybe even other non sports too....

NES Golf is easily one of the most underrated NES games ever.  Great fun in one or two player mode...

Baseball Stars is a must have...

Yeah....Gantry's right.  NES golf is a lot of fun...Riley and I used to play that with his dad for a lil dough, back in the day.  :)

If you take out the obvious choice of RBI, then I think the best sports games for the NES are:

Mike Tyson's Punch Out
NES Golf
Tecmo Bowl

I'd have to say Techmo Bowl, Blades of Steel, Mike Tyson's Punch-Out, & RC Pro Am, in that order.

Do you have a ROM for NES Golf?  If so, can you pretty please with sugar on top post it?

One of the better video game accomplishments of my life, in regards to Nintendo Golf.. having not played the game in over 2 years, went out and shot a 66 on my first round... and this was an excellent 66, i had 2 shots that were clearly not in the trees, but i drew the OB penalty anyway... and numerous putts that just stopped straight on the lip... my friend plays the game religiously and swears my round coulda been a 60 easy.. i think on this note ill hang up the spikes....

(this comes from a player who in his prime would be about 2-3+)

The fake OB is complete ass...  Usually what happens after that is that I'll shoot the exact same shot and get it again.  Pisses me off just thinking about it...

Me too.  I'm suddenly angry after reading your post, Gantry.  The worst thing, much like the bop in RBI, is the sound it makes.  That motonous, repeating tone gives me nightmares.

Of course I'm a fan of Tecmo Bowl and Tecmo Super Bowl but I never really liked any other football games.   NES Play Action Football had the potential to be good but was ruined by the fact that it has the slowest gameplay in the history of video games.  John Elway's QB pretty much became pointless after you discovered the reverse play.

I also liked Baseball Stars and Bad News Baseball but wasn't big on the Bases Loaded series.

RC Pro Am was another quality game and I liked Ice Hockey (the one where you pick the skinny, medium, or fat player).

It makes me feel like a fucktard to admit it but I've honestly never played Golf.  After hearing so much about it lately though, I think I'm going to pick it up and give it a shot.

I loved Dusty Diamond's All-Star Softball.  I look for it on ebay, but it always goes for $25 - $35.  Not spending that much on an old video game without RBI in the title

Thanks.  I appreciate the offer but a buddy of mine told me he thinks he has a copy laying around that he doesn't play.  If I don't hear back from him in a couple days though I'll send you a PM.

Has anyone else played Touchdown Fever?  It was a football game played from a total top-down perspective, on such a ridiculous scale that they measured first-down distance in tenths of a yard.  It also had no height perspective on passes, so an interception could occur at any point in the ball's flight.  It was really cool, though - you could play two-player co-op, you could lateral at any time, and there were two-point conversions.  I've mentioned it at work, and no one else has heard of it.

I have that one, and I really enjoy it - the most RBI-like of any other baseball game I've played.  The season mode (complete with stats!) really makes the game.  The computer opponent is still horrible, but if you play a regular team in a league full of Ultra teams, they can sometimes give you a run for your money.

I hear about this and baseball stars like everyday but I've yet to come accross them at a reasonable price..........They worth it even at 15-20 bucks?

Oh and BTW, I have 2 and maybe a third Famicom to NES converter coming so I can finally play my FS's mouhahahahahahaha

Right now, I'm hooked on Bandai Challenge Pebble Beach - hole in one yesterday.

Other favorites:

Baseball Stars
Blades of Steel
Mike Tyson's Punch-Out (don't accept Punch-Out without Mike Tyson - that's so cheap)
Techmo NBA Basketball
Techmo Super Bowl (Techmo was pretty much the EA Sports of its time, huh?)
10-Yard Fight (although the arcade game is way better)
Excitebike
RC Pro-Am
Track and Field
