I'm the biggest Rob Wilfong supporter in these here parts, but even I can't say he's better than Rupperto.  That's just crazy talk...

I know they're a solid squad on paper, but I've never had much success with California.  I think the whole lot of 'em are a sack of crap.

Coming from the world's biggest sack of crap, that doesn't mean much...

Well if I'm a sack of crap I probably am the biggest...

There's no "if" about it, ya sack

I can't take Ruppert Jones' side too well since I don't use him that much, but I will say that Rob "The Bong" Wilfong is indeed the fucking man. That deadly moustache and his clutch hitting are my family friends. For real, California only gets better when he's in the lineup.

It's true that Wifong offers more pop than the casual player might recognize.
However, there is no rational argument that supports Wilfong as being better than Jones.

Jones offers 75 more power points than Wilfong with similar contact points.

Try this on for size.
Jones has similar power to Gibson & Hrbek the same way as Wilfong has similar power to Grich and Heath.
There is just no comparison.

The only argument that could be made is for Wilfong having slightly bettter speed (4 points difference).
However, the power more than compensates for that difference.

Jones is the 17th most powerful hitter in the game, whereas Wilfong is 58th.

Nothing special about either player. Middle tier players at best...I have stats to prove it. Live with it.

ruppert is NOT middle tier.  he's in the top 15% no matter how you slice it.

can someone explain to me where these "contact points" come from...how do u decide that wilfong ranks where he ranks? im not familiar with that and am just curious
Title: Re: Rupert Jones?

contact points: the lower the number, the better.  the contact number is put into a random number generator at contact (depending on where the ball is struck on the bat) and the result of the RNG is deducted from the power rating to determine how hard the ball is hit.

our rankings are based on the actual data per programming in the game.  a lot of us who play fantasy have broken down this data (and some watchgame performance statistics).  a few people have thier own rating systems based on weighting values of certain stats.

basic starting excel sheet attached.

Is that true?
I thought the RNG was used to pick some distribution around the mean power number.
Then, if the ball was not hit on the sweet spot, the contact rating was subracted from that number.

I didn't think the RNG was used at all I just thought it was some subtraction of:

Power - Contact if not on the sweet spot

or

Power - Contact * (distance from sweet spot)

well somebody better find the thread then, because all three of our memories sound right.

I'm almost positive the second is correct.

I think this is correct, except I didn't think distance from sweet spot was part of it.  I thought it was 1) sweet spot or 2) not the sweet spot.

What is RNG used for then?  Trajectory?

I think you're correct - contact is all or nothing based on batter/ball position.

The random number generator determines the power of the hit, I think, with the power rating serving as a sort of seed or baseline or something.

This is the correct one (after rereading Nightwulf's post:

Power - Contact if not on the sweet spot

RNG has nothing to do with this.

yea but whats an RNG...where'd u get it, how does it calculate the numbers?...i know this is like teaching a liberal about fiscal responsibility, but still im just curious on the specifics

I'm a liberal. I'm fiscally responsible. Maybe you meant that it's like teaching toleance and compassion to a conservative?

Can we compromise with "compassion to a conservative and spelling to a liberal"?

Heh, yeah, at the risk of spawning a political debate, I'll leave it as is :)  Not even sure why I replied...as a rule i don't get into political debates, especially when someone wasn't directing their comment straight at me.

Anyways, so, how about that Rupert Jones?

Yes, you are correct TBG. I'm finishing up the stats, and the stats confirm what you say. He has a shitty contact rating---32, but his above average power rating (891) compensates for a lot of things. He was top 15 in a couple of categories.

Ruppert is fucking gold. I feel so dumb not using him sooner.

I played the computer in a warm-up game last night. It was between California and Detroit. Detroit scored 4 runs in the bottom of the 2nd inning. Detroit was up 4-0. Eventually Cali climbed back with singles by "The Bong" Wilfong, "Potatoes" Jackson and Wally Joyner (going 4-4, solid). Anyway, Jones blasted 2 RBI doubles in the top of the 9th and it became a 7-run 9th. I got the final edge on Detroit 10-9 after trailing the entire game...all because Ruppert lead off with a sick double, scored and came back in the same inning and hit a 2-run RBI double.

I am officially a believer in Ruppert Jones. Thanks for all your great words of wisdom with this man.
