Title: RBI Online Championship Series #1 - Official Thread
Post by: Turd on 02/14/10, 11:18:43 PM
The tournament begins now, and runs until all games are played.  When you finish your series, post the results here with a screenshot of the newspaper screen (I believe "ctrl e" takes a screenshot in nestopia, or you can get to it from the file menu).  I'll be tracking tourney progress at the following website:

http://challonge.com/ROCS1

- Round Robin - Every team plays every opponent once in a best of 3 series
- Top two teams play a 7 game series for the championship (tie-breakers will be head-to-head history, runs scored, runs allowed)
- Original ROM with 2P pause hack (if we do future tourneys, we can change this up)
- No All-Star teams
- Must use SP first
- Only one SP per game, so alternate between your games
- Anything goes style
- If you pinch hit and it doesn't require the pitcher to come out next inning, you must perform this substitution manually.
- No player can pinch hit for a pitcher unless there is at least one playable pitcher in said player's bullpen
- The "ball in the stands" glitch is allowed to result in a homerun, as there's nothing you can do about it
- For team selection, one player picks the matchup, the other picks which team he wants to be (decide on your own who does what)
- use same teams for the whole series for that round
- It's the first tourney I've ever run. Cut me some slack.

Let me know if you have connection issues or anything else...good luck!

Competitors:
Turd
SuckerPunch
Duane
Attezz
Re-Peat
Clambutt

Turd,

Also i remember absolutely nothing about getting it set up on the computer.  have to figure that all out again.

I'll be around tonight to start getting games in.

Tecmoturd, any chance you can attach the 2p pause rom in the original post?

TBT, of course you're welcome to be in the next one...hit me up and I'll help you get setup.

Attezz...you can get that ROM from http://rbibaseball.us/netplay.php

If you still need it attached, I'll do it tonight...

I may have the nickname Turd, but you two super turds (re-poop and Attezz) were posting in the ATG forum, but I didn't see you in chat to play our games...it's late and I'm going to bed.  I might have time tomorrow, but Wednesday night is fam night, so if not tomorrow, then Thursday.

Turd - Bo
Attezz - Ca

Game 1
Game was tied 1-1 for a while, but then Attezz pulled ahead 3-1.  I was able to tie it up late, but he pulled ahead in the 10th to win 5-3.

Game 2
Got my ass kicked. Not much else to say.

Game 3
Had a 2-0 lead until Wildong hit a 3-run jack, and after that, I fell apart.

Summary: I suck at RBI, but had a blast playing, Attezz is a good shit...

Taking a break tomorrow night for family time, so I'll see you cats on Thursday or Friday...Att, I found some information on that issue...we'll hook up some evening and see what we can see...I had fun with our game, even though I lost by playing like a moron at the end of the game.

Is it a cream? Because I've already tried almost every single one of the creams and the only one that worked even a little was Zovirax, but even that seemed mostly temporary.

SuckerPunch: St. Louis
Turd: NY

Game was pretty tight, with a poor fielding play letting in some speedy St. Louis runners. He ends up finishing the game 2-0, as NY couldn't get any balls out of the infield.  Near the end of the game, Strawberry almost knocked in the tying run with a 2-run shot, but it just missed going out, and that sealed it for the SuckerPunchers.

On a sidenote, hamachi was being a total bitch, so we scrapped it for tonight and connected directly (cause I had my firewall forwarded already, so we technically didn't need hamachi).  The connection was as pristine as you could ask for.  Nary a hiccup or slow-down, it was like we were playing on a console.  What a sigh of relief after hitting a brick wall with Attezz' connection.

Tournament bracket will be updated shortly...

Did you guys have any luck with Hamachi?

Do you think directly connecting is the way to go? (If so...can you teach me how that works?).
Title: Re: RBI Online Championship Series #1 - Official Thread
Post by: Turd on 02/18/10, 11:44:52 PM
When hamachi isn't doing it's stupid "relayed tunnel" blue dot thing, it's the way to go cause you don't have to configure your router.  I read on the forums though that when it does that, it slows the connection way the fuck down, which is why we had such a shitty connection last time.  When you and I played the first time, we did it without Hamachi and that's why it was smooth as hell.

I was hoping hamachi would be a viable solution because I fear that noone on this board is gonna want to configure their routers when they are already averse to setting up their online connection the way it is.

I can teach you how to set it up though, it's not terrible, it's just not as easy as loading up hamachi and just playing. At least the first time...after it's setup, there's nothing to it and it's actually better cause then you don't need that step of loading up hamachi.

We'll try again tomorrow and see if Hamachi has corrected itself, otherwise, we'll readdress.

We need to get this going, cause this last game we played was a perfect connection.

Also, Attezz, i found two more hamachi alternatives that people on several forums claimed are better, free, and open source, which is cool.

See ya online tomorrow night for some testing if you have the time...

Edit...some of the tecmo guys have had the same problem. I found some alternatives that are thought to be better.

Nice game Turd!  If it wasn't for a few baserunning blunders and your screen saver you might have tied it up.  I couldn't believe that crucial error by Oz late in the game negating an easy double play.  I should have gone to Worrell late in the game cause Dayley sucked!
Once again the game was lag free and it was just like playing on the console.

I was thinking maybe Hamachi is being overloaded by all the Tecmo players that are starting to use it.  I do remember seeing a message when I was uploading it that said they were experiencing a high volume of traffic.  Maybe we should try it out during the day when there might be fewer users.

Thanks much Turd for all your help getting this going!

Series with Suckerpunch.

Game one was pretty close, game two everything seemed to work for me, game three I got absolutely embarrassed, pretty happy we're only playing three game series as I lost all momentum and am confident I would have lost the next 9 games if given the chance.

I'm so happy you guys took some initiative and played. That's the one thing that's killed these in the past, lack of participation and lack of games played not involving the netplay helpers.

Turd: Dt
Duane: Bo

Lost first game due to fielding mishaps. Fell apart in the second due to lots of mistakes.  Hurst pitching was my one chance to get a win, and I still couldn't pull it off. Oh well...fun games, another pristine connection...third game coming another time

No screenshots cause I screwed the first one up, and the second one we lost a connection due to duane's internet, so we replayed it, and the score isn't right.  It will be on the bracket though...which I'll update in a sec...still looking for my first win!

Turd wins third game 3-2 to avoid the sweep...

Two great games really.  Pitching was the story in the first one.  Alexander and Clemens both had great starts with Clemens turning in an absolute gem.  It's been a long time since I've seen that many ground balls hit in one game.  Schiraldi did his best to blow it in the ninth by allowing the tying run to reach the plate, but pitched his way out of trouble to preserve the shutout.

And in Game 2, Ellis Burks started things off right with a leadoff, opposite-field jack.  Jim Rice followed it up with one of his own and I was out to an early 4-1 lead in the second inning when my internet decided to reset or something.  We simply spotted me three runs and started the game over.  I was trailing 3-1 going into the ninth (but really leading 4-3 I guess you could say).

Top of the order up - Burks doubles to right-center.  Apparently he loves going the other way.  And then, BOOM - Buckner ties it up with a high homer just over the right-field wall.  Armas and Rice do nothing and there's two outs.  Baylor bounces one over the third baseman for a long single and Dwight Evans answers with another single to put a Baylor in scoring position.  And Rich Gedman immediately finds a Hernandez fastball to his liking and doubles to left-center.  And again, Schiraldi enters to preserve the win.

Jack Morris was actually waaaaaay tougher to hit than Alexander too.  I could definitely go without pitching to Trammel again - he and Gibson both ate Hurst's "heat" for lunch in Game 2.

With the minor success of this tourney and getting some people online, my plan is to eventually run a league based on the 2010 ROM.  I want to run one more tournament though to get a few more people who wanted in to get involved (TBT), and also to prove that people will actually play their games.  If that gets proved, we can do a casual league...

My thoughts are:
People pick their team
The draft pool will come from only players from those teams (e.g., if the Rockies aren't chosen as a team, none of their players will be available to be drafted)
Draft teams
Allow for lineup changes if needed

Again, I'll only do this if I can prove people have the ambition to play their league games.  To be honest, this tournament is much like a mini league anyways, this would just take it to the next level.

I'm in for the league

For this tourney we are not hooking up randomly very well in the chat room.  Maybe we should email each other individually to set times to play.

In the tecmo world, everyone uses AIM, so  you just add your buddies to the list and find them when they come online, or you schedule a time via PM/Email/Forum post and meetup at that time.  It's not an exact science and sometimes doesn't work (due to people just not being on when they say they will) but it usually gets the job done.

It's all about members being proactive enough to get their games setup...

Third game in between Duane and Myself, updated screenshot in the post a few posts back.  This game was a pitchers battle...Rice hit a dinger on a left hooking curve in the 2nd inning which made me nervous cause I don't come back well, and I usually make a mistake and blow the lead.  But, in the 5th inning, Clemens started to run out of gas, and I felt a little more at ease, although not much, as Duane put on a nice pitching display even with a gassed Roger, but I managed a 2-run shot putting me up 2-1 and feeling good.  Alexander meanwhile was still throwing some good balls, but still managed to give up another homer to Rice to tie the game.  I managed to hit another homer in the 8th inning to pull ahead 3-2.  Now I was in panic mode. I still had to face Armas, and I knew I needed some good pitching and if I could just hold out for 4 outs, I'd get my first win.  I was able to change up my pitches enough to get out of the inning, finishing the game 3-2, avoiding the sweep.

GGs Duane, and good luck rest of the tourney.

Screenshot and bracket are updated.  I move to 1-7 with disappearing hopes of making the OCWS...

If no games are played on this soon, I'm just gonna let this first one die and use the RPC as a gauge of people willing to get some games in.  There's been a little action on the RPC thus far, and once more people start playing, I'll kick off an RBI Online Championship Series #1 - Redux from a pool of players from there.

Seems like Clam is nowhere to be found, I haven't seen SuckerPunch or Re-Peat, and Duane is on AIM but is usually on "phone" status.

Too bad...we SHOULD be able to get a 6-person tourney completed.

He is a friend of mine who lives about 20 minutes away.  Neither of us work much during the winter, so we have been playing a lot lately now that we can play online.  We have very competitive games and allow 2SP when we play.  Hamachi has been working great recently and seems to be back to it's oldself.  I'm enjoying the players circuit page very much as I have always enjoyed baseball stats.  He doesn't IM much, but I will try to get him into the chat room Thursday night and you or Attezz could play him.

Attezz, saw your IM. Wdnesdays are family night, no computer, only occasional phone post when kids are gong to bed kind of thing. We had a delay so it might be like that tonight too. I'm not sure. Well hook up again and play sometime.
