With the success of the 1987 ROM, anyone want to do the same sort of project for the Arcade version? Best players in history for each team...might be kind of cool...
we would first need to agree on criteria for what teams guys play on. don baylor, for example, is a tough call. and do you want to include active players? i believe the original did include active players.
Yep...I don't even care how it goes, we can discuss all that. I just thought it would round out the set of cool community ROMs we have. If we can agree on some of those things, I'll setup the editor for it.
I just thought I'd dangle it out there to see what kind of interest there would be in this. My 2010 ROM will soon become official, so I won't be tweaking that so often.
you like to tweak, don'tcha? are you sure you're not from iowa instead wisconsin?
I could throw a Twins/Senators roster together in a matter of minutes. Hell, here's a rough draft:
Starting lineup:
Carew 2B
Mauer C
Puckett CF
Killebrew 3B
Hrbek 1B
Goslin LF
Oliva RF
Cronin SS
Bench (Morneau is a given, then pick three):
Morneau
Rice
Sievers
Gaetti
Hunter
Yost

Johnson
Blyleven/Santana
Aguilera (Firpo Marberry would also be good here for a more retro flavor)
Nathan
Cardinals
Starting lineup:
Brock CF
Hornsby 2B

Musial LF
Medwick RF
Boyer 3B
Simmons C
Smith SS
Bench:

Johnson - should be awesome, as he is often regarded as the best pitcher ever
Santana - maybe a high differential in speeds, to reflect his great change-up?
Aguilera - unremarkable, basically a solid closer but nothing special
Nathan - good "normal" velocity to reflect excellent slider
Cripes, wasn't expecting this much of a response...I'll be "off" for tonight and tomorrow night, but when I'm back in business, I'll setup the editor. Those who are still interested can hop on and edit away...

Rodriguez over Nettles is a good call - he's been with the Yanks for six years now, which is probably the low end of what I'd consider for an all-time team (same with Reggie, but he's generally recognized as a Yankee, so he probably also should make it).
Maris is a good choice, too, since he's so recognizable; I went more with sustained greatness, rather than single seasons, but that "61" is nice to see coming off the bench. I still like Mattingly over Dickey - more recognizable name, better overall offensive player (since there's no requirement for a backup catcher in RBI, and I might pick Posada over Dickey even if there was).
The last few rosters only have one reliever, unless you really want to count Waite Hoyt and Smokey Joe Wood as relievers - sure, they made relief appearances, but it was fairly common for starters to occasionally throw in relief between starts in that era, and they were primarily starting pitchers.
I'd probably put Mickey Cochrane over Terry Steinbach on the A's, and Lefty Gomez should at least be in the running for one of the pitcher slots.
Ryno picked exactly the roster I would've for the Cubs, other than that I probably wouldn't have thought to put Aramis Ramirez on the bench (not sure who I'd have picked, probably some useless old timer like Frank Chance; Aramis is a better choice).

10 teams above from the Arcade 2 ROM would need to be updated because they cut off at 1987, Royals and Pirates might be the same
Wow, good stuff. We'd barely need to do any work here...
One update for the Pirates would be that Bonds would become awesome, getting his '90-'92 seasons added. Van Slyke would probably improve for the same reason. Jason Kendall should probably knock Tony Pena out of the catcher spot, and Brian Giles might get a bench spot.
Expos/Nationals would get a boost - they'd gain access to 90s guys like Vlad, Pedro, and Larry Walker, and since I assume we're allowing the same player on multiple teams (too hard to avoid with 30 teams), they could have Dawson as well.
Other potential post-'87 additions I can think offhand (obviously, not all of them would make the cut):
Philly - Rollins, Utley, Howard, Hamels, Kruk, Dykstra, Daulton
ChiSox - Konerko, Ordonez, Thomas
Indians - Baerga, Alomar (both), Manny, Belle, Thome, Sabathia
Mattingy should be on the Yankees! Nuff said!!
MOntreal NEEDS to have Wallach in the starting lineup. I think he has the franchise record for hits or something.
Vladdy should probably take Ellis Valentine's place in the line up as well.
Admittedly, I was not expecting the participation for this, but I'll try to get something setup in the editor soon...then anyone without a login I'll setup so they can start entering information...
Oh yeah...Dawson needs to be on the Expos, not the Cubs. He played longer as an Expo and they have less players to draw from. The Cubs would still be fine without Dawson.
i would vote for a player to only appear on one team. i would also think vladdy would also be an expo as opposed to an angel.
I see no reason why a player should be limited to one team - allowing them on multiple teams makes the all-time teams more accurate (Jimmy Foxx is legitimately the best first baseman ever for both the Red Sox and A's, for example), and it would prevent the post-1990 expansion teams from being even more useless than they already are. I don't know that it's any worse for Andre Dawson to catch his own fly ball than for that ball to have been initially pitched by Three Finger Brown, who died before Dawson was born - it's not like all-time teams are a realistic simulation.
Completely agree with everything you just said.
If that's the case, then why limit them to one roster spot on each team? If Mark McGwire's '98 and '99 seasons were two of the best ever for the Cards, why not have McGwire coming off the bench as well as starting at first base?
agree, I like no duplicates to get as many different players in as possible
i'd like to hear the arguments on a case-by-case basis with maybe some voting or something on the team for them to be on. i think in some ways it's a little lazy and too convenient to select dawson for the marlins or boggs on the tampa bay rays. why not just have the best available guy? at least they get some play and you never know how useful they could be in RBI.
I see both sides...I don't mind having duplicates of players, but that could get a little nutty because The A's fan wants McGwire and so does the Cardinals fan...
I'll leave it up to you guys to decide. Put it to vote or something...I'm just the webmaster for this project...

Because it's all-time greatest players for each team, not all-time greatest seasons (for example, even though I don't mind duplicates, I don't think Rogers Hornsby belongs on the Cubs, since wasn't with them very long, even though he easily had their greatest season for a second baseman). It's subjective, sure, but all-time teams as a whole are generally pretty subjective.
Rickey Henderson played for the A's on 4 separate occassions so he shold play all the OF spots and come off the bench.
