I've had several people ping me via email asking about playing full seasons on the 30-team ROM, complete with pitcher changes and whatnot. It started to get me intrigued about an idea I had a while back. Now, I have some new ideas, especially after seeing the NHL version of this someone at nhl94.com did.
I see it basically as a way to provide what the game does not, and that's a full-season play. You would have a list of pitchers for your team and you could set a starting lineup with a full rotation, so you'd have one SP and 3 RPs for each game, and for each game you play a new SP, through a 5-guy rotation. The manager would keep track of your stats and your record. This part is all extremely doable.
The one idea I had to make it really cool but also really difficult would be simming the games you don't play. So, If you're playing a season with the Brewers, you'd sim all the CPU games for that week, just like Tecmo does. Writing a simulation engine for that would be crazy...I thought about looping through each at-bat for a game and simulating that, producing a result at the end. Then I thought about possibly going higher-level and letting people import a set of sim ratings for a team and the simulator would use that, much like Tecmo does. I'm not sure, but I'd be curious to see what people had for ideas on how to simulate a matchup between a batter and a pitcher...
This is something I eventually plan to code, but since I'm working in the RBI Fantasy site and an editor for Coach K Basketball for the Genesis, it's a bit lower on my priority list, especially since I don't know how I'd implement it yet.
Discuss.

Yeah, this part sounds pretty difficult. How exactly does the TSB simulator work? I remember reading that TSB just generates stats but doesn't actually play the entire game, and I recall seeing a link to a sim editor for it, but I don't know how predictable it is.
Baseball Simulator 1.000 actually played the games internally somehow, I think, for its sims, but they several minutes apiece, and I doubt we want that (especially with a full 30-team league - it was headache enough with the 6-team leagues in that game).
I guess one way to come up with values would be to take fantasy league stats, which come from Watch Games, and correlate those results with the players' ratings. I still don't fully understand why it is that some pitchers generally do better than others, so I don't know how you're going to get that facet of the game very reliable. It might just be that pitchers are generally treated as generic by the simulator, and sim games are basically dependent on offense.
Each player and team in TSB has a sim value for their respective attributes. Receptions, passing ability, etc. The simming if done right is very accurate. There's a whole science to it.
I don't know why some pitchers do better either. In man play, curve and stamina play a huge role. I think keeping pitchers as part of the outcome would make it more realistic. Illhave to come up with some algorithm. Maybe probabilities based on a sim value for pitcher and batter, or something.
How much skill do you have in statistics? I am not aware of any traits that have shown strong correlations to success in FRBI for pitchers, but maybe it's a combination or something.
I tried going with high drop rates once (Mike Scott was my first pitcher pick), thinking it would get me lots of strikeouts, but Scott has been consistently poor in FRBI despite usually leading the league in Ks.
Well, with a sim value system, it shouldn't matter. I know Halladay is good, so I can give him a high sim value, and that would result in him striking out or causing more outs. No doubt this will be a difficult but interesting project. Well see if I ever have time to complete it.
First time poster!
I have been waiting for something like this to be possible with RBI!
this topic intrigues me because of my love of baseball statistics and playing some type of organized season with record keeping. I have always wondered if there were a way to make RBI keep stats similar to Tecmo Super Bowl. Much like the rest of the people on this board, I still think RBI is the best baseball game made to date, but the lack of this capability has limited how much I play.
Good Luck, I hope you are successful. I would offer to help but I have no programming experience.
Thanks for signing up Gator, and welcome!
Gator - in the meantime, you may want to check out Baseball Simulator 1.000. It doesn't have real teams, but it does have a team editor, so you could customize them at least a bit, and it has full season mode (5, 30, 60, or 160 games) with 6-team leagues. The gameplay and graphics are pretty similar to RBI, although the computer opponent is similarly inept. There are a set of "Ultra Teams" that have higher ratings and "super powers" (stuff like extra power hits and unhittable pitches), and I found that playing in a league with five of them using a regular team was generally a decent challenge. The main headache is that simulated games take several minutes apiece, although that can be mitigated a bit if you play on an emulator like VirtuaNES that has a "throttle" mode to speed things up.
I like RBI better for a 2-player experience, but Baseball Simulator is about as good as it gets for season-type play on the NES. I'd note that I've never tried the season mode in any of the Bases Loaded games - the only one I played much was Bases Loaded 3, which eschewed season mode in favor of a "play a perfect game" 1-player experience - but their gameplay is very different from RBI.
I fully plan on implementing this in some way shape or form. My priorities for projects right now:
1.) Finishing my coach K editor
2.) Writing a new 30-Team RBI editor
3.) Fantasy RBI Website
3.) Season manager
Lots of stuff to keep me busy!

Coach K editor... yes please.
Actually, we have a project going in the Tecmo community for this. I have released the first version of the editor that can edit the team stuff. I took a break over the weekend, and now I'm gonna be back to coding the player portion of this to finish it off.
In the meantime, one of my partners has updated all the logos, added the new teams from this year, and it's lookin' pretty fuckin' sweet. Another reason to get online!
Coach K is an amazing game, I really need to get my act together for online RBI, etc...
Any time you need to, let me know. Best part is, you are local, so if worse comes to worst, I can always drive over and get you setup...
We also need to get some arcade tourneys going or something...anyways, yeah, I'll keep ya updated...Coach K is a great game, and honestly, when you see what's been done with it, you'll think it's even better! WE even have Marquette in the game...although with the editor you can put anyone in...
I have to get my RBI machine back up and running... and you have to get that cabinet completed. There are actually about 3 or 4 more pretty high end RBI players right in our area.
Thanks for the warm reception.
BeefMaster thanks for the suggestions.
I have tried BS1.000 and agree with your assesment. I just have some hangups with the "super powers" and fake players. I have also tried the other games out there but have not really warmed up to any of them. I tried out the new 30 team juiced ROM, read this thread and got really excited.
For now I may give the 30 team challenge a try with the juiced ROM.
Breaking ground on the cabinet in a month. As for the season manager, I did a few trials, looks good so far, but it's way effin early. Enjoy the 30 Team ROM in the meantime, and be sure to give us some updates on how it's going.
No sweat Turd.
I was not trying to put any pressure on you but rather offer encouragement.
I think what you are attempting to do is pretty cool. I know the pay isn't good so I wanted to give you a pat on the back.
