Title: RBI 30-Team Editor (Beta) - Beta 2 now available
Post by: Turd on 04/25/10, 11:18:24 PM
This is the official thread for the RBI 30-Team Editor. Those who complained about the unfamiliar usability of my 10-Team editor should find this one a little closer to home.

You need the .NET Framework 3.5 or greater to use this editor. You can get it here (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=333325FD-AE52-4E35-B531-508D977D32A6&displaylang=en).  I know I'll probably hear some grumbles about that, but I'm not compromising on this.  .NET is everywhere. For those who don't know, the .NET Framework is Microsoft's flagship programming framework (remember how you have to download the java environment to use some Java apps? Same thing here).  Download it and install it, it's not that big of a deal.

Beta Release 1 - 4/25/2010
Ability to edit pitcher/batter attributes, including pitcher batting
Ability to re-order lineup
Ability to edit all team data (uniforms, name, abbreviation) except for attract mode, which will come in the next release

This is a rough beta that was only spot tested. Lots more functionality is planned, but at minimum, I wanted to get this beta out there to see what people thought.  Most important stuff is editable.  There is little to no validation on the input fields, so make sure you're working off of a backup copy of your ROM if you don't want to worry about making mistakes and breaking shit. Il address validation in another release.  Please leave any feedback in this thread so that I can fix bugs, change the UI to make it easier to use, etc.

Beta Release 2 - 4/30/2010
Added ability to select dirt paths or retro field (under misc. hacks)
Copyright and attract mode text is editable
Can now cycle through teams with next/previous buttons
CPU Juice is editable (under misc. hacks)

Once again, error validation on entered values is not performed. That is still coming in a future release (hence the "Beta" version).  I still plan on adding some other color palette editing, as well as a uniform overview so you can see what all your unis look like at once to help avoid conflicts, a player ranker where you can adjust the weights of certain categories, and a roster exporter.  That's all planned, but I hope this release satisfies some people's needs for now.

Important: I changed around some of the pointers in the ROM to help make Attract Text even easier.  If you attempt to edit a previous ROM with this editor, you'll get a warning, and the Attract Mode text will not work correctly.  I've packaged a new version of the ROM with the moved pointers in this release.  This MAY happen again when I get the fixed version of the dirt path stuff (there are a few descrepancies that need fixing).

I'm gonna continue with updates, so check this thread as they come about. I also want to work on some code to pull stats from baseball-reference so that I can more easily edit my ROM.

Anyways, being able to edit the players should at least satisfy the Requests I've gotten from people to make custom ROMs for them. Lots of people email me asking for 5 ROMs with their teams starting rotation. Now they can do it themselves.

Uhoh. This is dangerous. Let the flood of RBI roms commence! Great job Turd!

Thepressure will be on now for me to make my ROM the best it can be. My only hope is that a combination of the massive amount of time doing a good ROM takes and this community's general laziness and lack of motivation bodes well for the sanctity of the TecmoTurd ROM. I kind of liked the little community effort that went along with my ROM. it polished it up nicely.

This may belong on a different thread....if so, sry about that (still a NO0B), but.... I long ago attemped to use a players home run total, batting average, and steal total to figure out a fairly uniform way to come up with RBI's contact ratings, Power ratings, and Speed Ratings. Easy enough to do with Power and Contact rating, by taking what the origional programmers used and adding/dividing. Speed is more difficult, as the SB wasnt in the code at all, so I had to go one by one, and TRY to figure out what the origional programmers used as far as year.(they used 1986, 1987, and for a lot of stats, especially in HR and AVG...seemed to use a BEST year from like 82, 84 or just make something up). If anyone is working on a rom, and wants my geeky formulas, just ask.... Now I still dont know to to replicate pitching totally...may try and base total points in curve L, curve R, and Sinker based on their ERA....havent done it yet, but I might :)
I am starting the flood LOL with a 1982 season....will put it up when Im done and let you guys tell me what is wrong(like sidearm or not, wrong stats, etc...)

I got a really good system. I found strictly using formulas doesn't make for accurate ROMs. But I feel my system provides a great base.

I'm reasonably sure the original programmers didn't use any sort of formula for anything - I think they just went with what they knew of the player, what year they got his stats from, how much they liked him, etc.

I've checked the ratings in RBI 3, and they appear to use a formula of some sort, at least for power ratings.

I made a custom cartridge once that weighed OPS and HR (also weighed for most recent year and last 3 years), contact based on a weight of AVG + K%, and speed based on SB + SB%. Pretty sure they didn't do that for the game though.

The true question is... can this be burned to a cartridge? Because I might need to get one done at the end of the season if so.

Good news for those who care, I was able to get the dirt paths as a selectable hack in the editor.  You can choose Retro Tengen Field or Modern Tengen Field...hopefully a release soon. We shall see.

That's enough said :)  I just have one more issue with spacing on how I'm writing the Attract name stuff, and this next release should have a whole plethora of tasty goodness for people to chew on.

Please, if you have an error, don't just ignore it, send it to me so I can fix it! Otherwise, I have no idea, blissfully thinking my code is solid :)

Also, just to reiterate, it IS a beta release.  With no validation on what you input, you could potentially hose the shit out of your ROM by putting in some crazy shit...once I determine how I'll do validation, that should change, but for now, that's what we got...

Shit biscuits. Seems as if there's some error going on that kahouty found. I'm looking into it...

Edit - The error only occurs when you open one ROM and apply it to another ROM that doesn't exist.  As of right now, the editor can't generate you a brand new one, so instead, make sure you apply your changes to an already existing ROM (e.g., make a copy of the Master ROM and use that).  I'll work on fixing that for the next release...

That's the probability that pitcher will throw a curve left or right in certain situations. There is a thread around here somewhere that explains it.
