Hey guys...
I am in the process of building a real nice Mame arcade cabinet as a gift to my best man... Everything has been going grea, except for the fact that I can't seem to get R.B.I. to run properly.
Here are the issues I am having.
With MameUI, it says the following file is missing (which seems to be the driver for the VS system from what I have read) but I cannot download it anywhere... :(

With regular mame (command line) I can get the game to run fine, yet the video is corrupt... Attract mode runs, the sounds work properly, but the sprites and words are unrecognizable.
Wouldn't you know it, of course this is his favorite game of all time. :/ Thanks in advance for your help! :)
Yeah, I tried getting it to work with Mame too, and the best I could get was a garbled screen that's unplayable. What I ended up doing for my cabinet was running the NES version with the arcade rosters from Gantry's page with Nestopia. It's almost the same...I use MameWah for my front-end...
If you ever get it running, or get a copy of it that doesn't garble the screen graphics, let me know!

I don't remember whether there was a specific BIOS I had to download for the Vs. games, and I couldn't find one with some Googling, but if you're not averse to a big download, you could always just grab the MAME BIOS pack (http://planetemu.net/index.php?section=roms&dat=791), which should have every BIOS file you might need.
The website I linked to there, Planet Emulation (http://planetemu.net/), has a ton of up-to-date ROMs, so depending on the level of MAME you're working with, it also might not hurt to grab the latest rbibb.zip from there. The site's in French, but it's still not hard to navigate - just hit the MAME link on the right side, then go to the "MAME (CHD & Samples excluded)" link on the next page, and you should be able to find the latest dump of pretty much any ROM you need (although not the compressed hard drive (CHD) images for newer games).
I've never had problems playing Vs. RBI using MAME32 (actually MAME32FX now, since it maintains the high score support). I'm not on that system right now, but I'll check it out either at lunch or this evening and see if there's special/odd about my ROMs.

Tried the newest rbibb and bios pack, using mameui32fx as you suggested... same error missing that pal file... :/

Sometimes with mame ROMS you need the parent rom as well. I think there were three versions of RBI. I'm going to order the complete mame rom set for my cabinet, may e it has all the required files on it.
I noticed that there was a "set 1" and "set 2" when I looked up the ROM earlier on Planet Emulation, and it didn't list any parent ROMs (which I think it would if it required a BIOS). However, I downloaded set 1, which is the parent ROM, and it also didn't contain any PAL files in the ZIP. I'll try just grepping through my ROMs directory for that file when I get on my other system, in case there's something there I missed.
I think my build of MAME is old but not ancient, probably from sometime last year or the year before (over .100, but probably not higher than .110 or so). No idea whether that makes a difference.

With some builds of MAME, there's a file you can download called "HISCORE.DAT" that can be used to persist your high scores across sessions - it basically just contains the memory offset for the high score data of a bunch of games that don't have their own storage, along with the current list of high scores for those game, and it plugs that into memory when starting the game. They removed support for it in the main MAME codebase, considering it a "hack", but some of the alternate frontends put it back in. I personally enjoy being able to know exactly how well I've ever done at Donkey Kong.
Okay, just checked on mine to make sure I wasn't remembering wrong, and it work perfectly. I'm running MAMEUIFX32 0.132, and my copy of rbibb.zip is attached.
Still no go... rp2c04-0001.pal not found...
You must have that file somewhere in a bios pack or chd or something.

I didn't have a grep utility on that system, so I wasn't able to do a search of my ROMs directory. I went and downloaded the GNU one for Windows, but not sure how long the command will take to run through a gig or so of ROMs.

I'll mess around with it tonight...I was equally disappointed with this as well...
So your buddy's favorite game is RBI in general, or specifically RBI the Arcade game?
I believe the only version he ever played was the arcade version, so I guess that's the answer... If possible I'd rather it be the mame version that I get working so that it can just be installed in the cabinet I am making him.
As a last resort I will write menu that will allow switching between MAME, Daphne and Nestopia or something... But for convenience sake, I hope I can get this going :)
By all means, I agree. Getting the real one working would be nice. If you get to the point where you have to, I wouldn't write anything, I'd just configure mamewah...it's a front-end...I use it on mine, it plays PC, NES, SNES, Mame, etc...does the switching for you...
Be sure to post pics of the cab when you're done! I'm starting the next phase of my cabinet next month...waiting on a buddy at work to come available so we can build them together...
Just out of curiosity, have you guys tried running any other Vs. games? Do they work?
Give me an example...I'll try it...
Vs. Super Mario Bros, Vs. Castlevania, Vs. Excitebike... there are probably a dozen or two NES games that were ported to the Vs. arcade system. The site I linked above has ROMs for all of them.
Just tried a couple and neither worked...
Vs. Castlevania wanted rp2c04-0002.pal
Vs. Super Mario wanted rp2c04-0004.pal
Beefmaster, you must have a magic bios file or something that has a group of these particular pal files for the cs. system....
Well, we're making some headway it seems anyways :)
I just tried it with mame .136 and it loaded, played fine, but the graphics are still all garbled...
beefmaster may have some good news for us today in the line of pal files :)
