Title: Chili!
Post by: BeefMaster on 07/24/04, 07:44:53 PM
I happened to be reading the forum while opening up some baseball cards I bought this morning, and lo and behold I happen to come across a Chili Davis card.  It's a '97 card, so he's with the Royals, but still, it's Chili!  I just thought you all should know.  I'll update the thread if I come across another RBI-er.

Why exactly were you buying baseball cards from 1997?

There's a record store/card shop near my house that's going out of business, and they had some older cards on the cheap.  I bought around 150 cards and a new large storage box (my old one was full, so I separated my cards into NL & AL) for about $5.  I was actually disappointed they didn't have any older cards than '97; a couple years ago, I found a bunch of '93 Fleer Ultra at 3/$1 at another card shop here (since closed, sadly).

I was the store manager of a card shop from August '98 to December 31, 2000 when the store closed. Lotsa sports card lookers, but the vast majority of our business came from Beanies the first year, and Pokémon the last year. The guy I worked for had 7 stores, mostly around the St. Louis area. They're around still as far as I know.

Amazingly they just opened a Sports card/memorabilia shop in LaGrange, IL, I have yet to visit, have trouble believing they'll be able to stay in business.

cards are insanely expensive. I remember when upper deck cards were $1 a pack. Now, I guess some of them can go for $5-10 a pack, maybe that's way off, but that's what I heard a few years ago.
Does anyone else love the Topps cards that had that wood looking border around them? I think it was '87, the best cards and players ever!

It right on Lagrange Rd.(=Manheim = Rt45).  Just south of the train tracks(Burlington) on the west side of the street.

About six months ago, I wandered into the 99 Cent Store by my office for God knows what reason - I think I had some time to kill after work but before my bowling league started or something. Anyway, rummaging through the boxes of stationary crap, I found something that at almost any cost would have been a steal, but at 99 cents was the Deal of the Century.

I found dozens of Chili Davis Topps folders from 1988. If you guys remember, Topps came out with folders (like you would put your papers in during elementary school) that looked like trading cards. I don't have a picture of the Chili Davis one, but here's the Straw one to give you an idea:

So, picture that, but with Chili Willie from the Giants instead of Darryl. If that isn't straight up Dee-Nee, I don't know what is...Needless to say, I bought three of them, and have been using them to store important work files ever since.

Holy shit!  I remember these things.  I think I had a half-dozen, can't remember who though.

That's crazy. I remember those too. I don't think it was only that year, though. I think they did it a few years

I've only got about a dozen or so of those cards (not including a Cubs team set), but one of them is a Reggie Jackson.  Dee-Nee!

Most of my cards are '88-91 - I did most of my collecting in '91, and the gas station where I bought most of my cards had old packs of '88-'90 Topps as well.  I do fondly remember the prices - Topps, Fleer, and Donruss were $.50 a pack, Score were $.60, and Upper Deck were $1.  Now, the cheapest current-year cards run $2.50 or so.

I had a ton of those 88 topps folders too. I think I had Straw, Ronnie Darling and a few other Mets. Those teams were great, everyone had legal issues of some kind, be it drugs, alcohol, women, you name it, those mets were into it.
-Beef- you really missed out with those '87 topps. I used to go to a store that had monster packs that were 100 cards for $1.50. It also came with a special rookie card that was white and, oddly enough, seemed much cheaper than the other cards in the pack. '88 was a good year too. remember the donrus cards that had the blue edges with the red pipe looking stripe on the side. I have that set. Those were the glory days. Did you have any Bowman cards? The ones that were cheap, but much bigger than normal cards and, thus, much easier to damage.

I had a Freddie Lynn, French-Canadian O-Pee-Chee Premier card.  So random.

I have a few Spanish O-Pee-Chee cards, mostly '88s that are identical to '88 Topps, which I got out of those big assorted packs like you get at Wal-Mart, with a star on the front and back (that you can see) and 100 or so commons in between.

I have maybe a half-dozen packs of Bowmans, from both '90 and '91.  They always seemed cheap, and I never liked them.  The breakdown of stats by opponent on the back was interesting, but I never liked it all that much.

I actually don't have much for '88 Donruss, apart from a Twins team set.  I did get a box of '89 Donruss at one point when I was little, but it was before I started really collecting, so a lot of the cards got tossed around my room and are in horrible shape.  I always thought '90 were the best Donruss cards, with the red border and the script-style names.  I have a Sosa rookie from that set, though, so maybe that's coloring my memory.

"Diamond Kings" were awesome, by the way.
