Title: Major forum upgrade -- post problems here!
Post by: nightwulf on 06/29/11, 04:06:15 AM
I've just completed a major upgrade of the forum software. As I suspected, the forum theme we've been using since the beginning has been officially deprecated. Fortunately somebody made a pretty close version of it which we're now using.

I'll be dicking around with this for a little while longer tonight. Any suggestions for things to change / fix, post 'em here.

The banner at the top looks weird.  Looks its cutting off a line of text.

I may have to stop in the greater Cerro Gordo area (named after the Battle of Cerro Gordo) and buy nightwulf some Taco Bell for this one, he did this completely on his own.

I notice a few spammers already, so I'll lock registration until we can figure out a better way to do that or find a better captcha app.  My work day is pretty busy so I don't have much time after 8:30 to look at things.

But everyone PLEASE look around and post here with any issues you can find so we can clean up later on.

Ussue #1: Gantry still sucks.

Please rectify.

I disabled registration, far as I can tell there is no CAPTCHA setup but I didn't look very hard.

I switched to the Core theme and it's treating me well.  It's noticably faster at rendering the pages than our usual theme, or was it loading slow only for me?  Try switching and tell me if you notice a speed difference - also a little more polished.

A note for myself more than anything else - look to see if we can add a package that'll force Admin approval for anyone registering from an non-US IP address.

Let me clarify.

I was trying out the "Classic" layout theme.  And :POW: and other smilies don't work.  And for some reason, the cop smilie changes into a smilie with an afro.

Switched back to the old school theme and POW looked fine to me, also works fine on the Curve theme.

And after switching it's official, the Curve theme is way faster than our normal theme.  I think I'm migrating...

Is this how it is suppose to look, or is it just my outdated browser?
Lots of unnecessary space at the top of each post.
The quote links look weird.

Some day they will let us upgrade to (at least) 7.

I'd probably rather not use the internet than use an old version of IE

Changes I've noticed (using the default theme, as far as I know, on Firefox 5):

Quotes now have a little quotation mark in front of them
URLs are much lighter in color, a bit hard to see at times
The "general" and "Dee-Nee Forums" links have slightly different destinations now - "General" scrolls down the page to the actual forum links
People with a custom title (e.g. "Not Funny Level") have both that and their default post-based title (e.g. "Reggie Jackson Level") displayed simultaneously, rather than just the custom title
Header is a bit different, without a mention of PMs (although there's a new "messages" link up there for that)
Chat is gone, although I'm pretty sure that was a custom addition by Nightwulf

Other than chat leaving us (which I would assume could be put back in at some point, and I don't know how often it was used anyway), the URL thing is the only thing that I'd consider at all a negative, and it's pretty minor.

Yeah, our IT is awesome.
We all got upgraded to IE7 several months ago, but then we reallized that all of our functionality on our Intranet site was gone, so they downgraded us all back to IE6.

my work uses an old version of IE as well, it truly blows.  however, a few months ago, an old version of firefox magically appeared on my work computer.  it's no great shakes, but much better than IE.

The worst thing about IE is that little "tsst" noise that it makes EVERY SINGLE TIME you click ANYTHING.  Who on earth wants to hear a noise every time they click a link while online?  My work also has what they call "deep freeze" so that any changes to the Control Panel I make are reset every time I log out, meaning that disabling the "tsst" is not really possible.  Sucks when I am trying to preview a video or software for the kids to use that has sound.

There are captcha settings under admin -> configuration -> security and moderation -> anti-spam. It looks like the GD library is missing which is resulting in really weak captchas ... I'll look at that tonight. The security questions may be sufficient anyway.

Hit the "profile" button towards the top, then modify profile -> look and layout. You'll see the current theme ("YaBB SE Next Gen") and a link to change it to the other installed themes.

Installed the gd & gd-devel packages, captcha showing up but not very impressive.  Wonder if it's still having an issue...

Added a security question and re-enabled email verification, lets see what happens

This theme has an error which doesn't appear to hurt anything but it does spit an error in the log every single time someone loads a page. I've asked for assistance from the theme author and disabled eval()'ing the theme; this may speed things up.

I'm pleased to announce that, for the first time since ever, the package management system is working properly with ward. This makes it easy to add new features written by people with far more skills / time than I.

I've added an auto-embedder for media links. This means that when you post links to YouTube, Vimeo, and many other popular sites (a total of 199) the forum will automagically embed the video in your post. They don't auto-play, so I don't see any harm for people at work or the like.

To use, just copy the URL of a video in your post. Don't use the url tags or anything like that, just the whole URL (starting with http).

I'll kick us off:

To use, just copy the URL of a video in your post. Don't use the url tags or anything like that, just the whole URL (starting with http).

I'll kick us off:

I'll have to find out if this works for the pR0nhub video links...so excited - so scared.

I really don't see it. Betsy is a good sport even after she opens 4 fart-eggs in a row. It isn't until the entire menagerie of farm animals starts singing and farting in her kitchen that she finally throws a pie at him. And then she helps clean him at the end.

In the previous version when a topic had multiple posts, didn't we have the option of clicking the second last page?  It doesn't exist anymore and I think we need it back.

i.e. a thread might have 30 pages but the topic might look like:

Gantry Smells like cat piss..please discuss (pages 1, 2, 3....30)

Its better when its:

Gantry Smells like cat piss..please discuss (pages 1, 2, 3....29, 30)

I've noticed the last day or so that sometimes I click on "new" to read a thread and then use "jump to" to get back to the board topic list that "new" button doesn't go away.  When I go in a second time it does, anyone else?  I can't believe it's related to me moving the .vhd file to a different drive but the timing adds up.

Keeps happening randomly for me, home and office.  For everyone it happens to, keep on eye on when it comes up.  For me always with the "Jump to:" at the bottom.  I may start clicking on the board name in the "Dee-Nee Forums -> General -> News" area on top/bottom to see if it happens there.

WE MUST GET TO THE BOTTOM OF THIS

Converted the forum database to UTF-8 so I can add and browse Dee-Nee en español - as a result I have to rebuild the search index.  So it'll take a bit for that to happen, so don't search this morning.

Also let me know if you run into any glitches with the UTF-8 conversion, I've seen nothing so far.

Six sessions, I'll time it to see if it's faster - think so
Title: Re: Major forum upgrade -- post problems here!
Post by: Gantry on 10/15/15, 09:14:06 PM
I don't think it's any faster :(

That said I found a place to disable the password prompt for admins, so that's a huge hurdle.  So at our 2% an hour pace it'll be done in just about 48 hours as we're at 51.76% now.  That is if the index doesn't go back to 0 like it did before.

Why don't you just watch what job runs on the machine, and then run that as a background process until it finishes?  That way it wouldn't be session based.
Title: Re: Major forum upgrade -- post problems here!
Post by: Gantry on 10/16/15, 08:29:07 AM
I'm not sure how to track down said job, when I run top it just spawns more CPU-heavy httpd processes.  The URL is :

https://forums.dee-nee.com/index.php?action=admin;area=managesearch;sa=createmsgindex;step=1

Can I weed through index.php to track it down?  That said it's mostly for my knowledge at this point as it's chugging along nicely now that the admin login timeout is removed.  Up to 78.8%

Search is returning too many results.  For instance I was trying to search for "flicky" to find the arcade challenge thread, and it returns 30 threads.  Alot of different searched turn up exaclty 30 threads and more often than not do not contain the search word.

Gotcha, I'm just as confused.  Are you using the website itself?  I guess regardless of what is causing it, I doubt I can fix.  Though if you are using the browser maybe you can get Tapatalk or another browser for the Blackberry.

I know on Android some apps will switch to a different keyboard than the default, Duolingo for example.  It there a way to switch keyboards on the BB?

Got a weird thing going on here - whenever I return to the main Anything Goes page after reading new posts, the "New Posts" flag disappears from both the thread I was reading AND the thread immediately below it. I'm using Edge with AdBlock Plus installed although the extension doesn't appear to block anything in Dee-Nee.

What Tempo said, pedo has a million different uses based on word combos and context.  Similar to shit in English, in fact I made a list awhile back:

No hay pedo = not give a shit (más fuerte en inglés pero bueno)
(Ya) ni pedo = shit happens
Estar pedo = to be shitfaced
Qué mal pedo = that's shitty
Empedarse = to get shitfaced
Sacar un pedo = scare the shit out of me
Ser buen pedo = to be a good shit
Estar pedorro = to be shitty

And "wey" (also spelled guey) is basically the version of "bro" or "dude" in Mexican Spanish.  Except your average Mexican male between 20 and 50 uses it legit every sentence or two when talking to a friend or someone in an informal situation.  It's absurd and I caught the fever awhile back and say it WAY too fucking much now too.  Basically a filler word, but once you start it's hard to stop...

Has anyone seen this happen on Firefox?  Looks like we may be able to comment out some lines, trying to finish up a bunch of crap before bed so wouldn't tackle it until tomorrow if we can confirm it's the same issue.

As for this forum's upgrade, the operating system it runs on (CentOS Linux 6, the free version of Red Hat Enterprise) is now out of support.  The problem is that I planned to go to the latest version CentOS 8, but IBM (who now owns Redhat) in their infinite wisdom just announced that they are shortening the lifecycle for CentOS from the normal 10 years to 2 fkn years.  Well after the product was released.  This kind of fucks me so I'm in a holding pattern waiting to see the fallout.  So I'm likely just going to limp along on this server hoping there are no major Apache or kernel security issues in the next few months.

Also SMF version 2.1 which has been in beta forever in on its third release candidate.   What makes sense is to upgrade to a new server when both 2.1 are out and there is some clarity to the CentOS 8 shitshow.  Stay tuned...

Saw all the news on that and wondered what path you'd take. Personally I'm using Debian on my server and love it. Rock solid. Run several services in Docker containers, truly a "set it and forget it" OS. Downside is everything is way behind current versions because they promote stability over all, which fits my use case for that machine. I run Arch on my desktop and Mint on my laptop where updated software is more important.

But I'm guessing you're a RH fanboy (much like myself and every other nerd is a fanboy of one distro or another). Rocky Linux (https://wiki.rockylinux.org/) may be your best answer, if they get off the ground.

Debian or Ubuntu LTS are definitely the current leaders, Rocky Linux would of course be perfect but I don't see that being out and stable anytime soon.  I don't have the Linux knowledge I used to and would much prefer a RH based system for familiarity's sake.  If I can get one of those Docker containers with SMF and Mediawiki that would certainly save me a ton of hassle.

Probably all kinds of containers for MediaWiki. Looks like an official one here (https://hub.docker.com/_/mediawiki/).

Only noticed one SMF container (https://github.com/MissAllSunday/SMF-Docker) packaged / maintained by some random person.

Probably not difficult to take an official Apache container (https://hub.docker.com/_/httpd/) (or your favorite server) and install SMF, probably a better approach.

Understood and agreed on familiarity, but the Debian ecosystem is pretty fkn simple. Really I think all of them with mature package managers are. I'd lean Debian over Ubuntu just for the focus on stability and no worries about any further stupid direction changes from Canonical. Some are hesitant on Deb due to the focus on free software, but I've had no issues finding and adding the packages I needed, lots of things packaged in .deb.

Oh and nothing against SMF, updates are slow but it's definitely not abandoned. That said, you could get really fucked of Old Blacksmith and look for something more modern (https://meta.discourse.org/t/smf2-to-discourse-the-ultimate-guide/90314) which has a more active developer community.

SMF is definitely getting up there and the updates are definitely SLOW (we've been at 2.1 RCs for nearly two years) but I simply don't have the desire to go through the hassle of migrating to something else.  But then again since it'll be a whole new server I can do trial runs until I get it right.  Probably won't but should consider...

So having never used Docker, would recommend I install separate docker images for each thing the current server does - specifically the wikis and forums?  They'll each need mysql as well, so I don't how much I should separate things.  Not sure how much you typically specialize...

MariaDB (https://hub.docker.com/_/mariadb/) (not mysql) in one container to serve as the db for everything. Probably one container for MediaWiki, another for the forums. No special reason other than it's easier imo to just spin up two containers than try to have a working http config for both in one container. Also means if you install a new version of MW and it goes nuts, it doesn't take the forums down with it. I like using a macvlan network (https://docs.docker.com/network/macvlan/) to give each its own IP rather than putting each on a different port. Needs some internal routing config but that's minor. Can give each service its own static internal IP that way. Also like Portainer (https://www.portainer.io/) for managing containers. Probably losing nerd cred for not doing it with text files or huge command lines, but ain't nobody got time for that.

Change your SSL cert to a wildcard, covering dee-nee.com and *.dee-nee.com. DNS for dee-nee.com proper, CNAME records for forums, wiki, whatever else pointing to the proper hostname. Reverse proxy answers that IP, hands off to the appropriate internal IP based on hostname. I like Nginx Proxy Manager (https://nginxproxymanager.com/) for this. HTTPS connection to NPM, NPM holds the SSL cert and passes decrypted traffic downstream, no need to configure SSL on the downstream services.

OK thanks for all that - it's a lot of new shit to learn but I'm likely not going to have a choice given that it's just a matter of time before this site and forums will become easily hackable.

I think I'll start with the wikis because they should be easier, should let me build the infrastructure before moving along to the hardest part - which will likely be the forums.

Now the big question is when...

Community Update - December 2020 (https://forums.rockylinux.org/t/community-update-december-2020/1157)

Still too early to tell, but they're looking kind of impressive.
